Decoding The Holy Grail: Terpene & Cannabinoid Retention: Decarb to Extraction

:yahoo:

Let me read them.

I was expecting a bit more terpene retention than that, but I realized I don't have any perspective for this. This is the first test I've seen for an infused oil that bothered to get the terpene profile.

Now I'm curious as to how much gets retained in a traditionally-prepared infused oil with decarbed dry buds.

I'm gonna think about this overnight. Thank you Canyon. The Chem Dawg just told me its past my bedtime and it's getting harder to make out the keys. :laughtwo:

Goodnight.

"I just got off the phone with Steep Hill. We are up to two free terpene tests and the results should post before closing."

Canyon, Since we have freebees, I think we should test the 2hr extraction. This was made from the Nova decarb which is the same as an oven decarb, only with more control. That would tell us if the traditional decarb methods retain any terpenes. I would say do the decarbed bud but we may as well skip to the end. I cannot imagine those terpenes being harmed further in the oil bath. We will still have a free one left. I'm sure someone will think up a use for that one. AND, way to go for keeping the heat on SH and scoring free tests. AND, thanks to Steep Hill for doing the right thing!

Well, that would no longer be an option come to think of it....unless you still have the decarbed buds that were for the oven trial.

So do we get a Newbies Guide to the results soon, fur us none chemists.,...lol

Well, no not really. It's all on the fly.

As of now I have 15 lab reports that date back to March 8. Five of them are for terpenes, so we have information to look at.

Saturday mornings are dedicated to breakfast with a friend so it's going to be several hours before I can get back to this.

When I get back, I am thinking about posting all the reports in a long post. That way everyone who wants to can right click the image, copy it and print it out.

I never know

"who wants to can right click the image, copy it and print it out."

LOL. Ok, I didn't know that trick! Once again guidance from the one who never knows. Hope everyone saw that post....or am I the only one who didn't think of it??? LMAO

That would be FANTASTIC

Id say 80% of the time im on my Phone, so 1 consolidated post with results and yer previous outline would be great.. OOOOO and BLOG it also

Then Ill print them all and can go thru them myself eaiser

Again guys, thanks a BILLION for yer efforts, Im sure over the next few days we can get a concise review of the results

Fun Fun Fun:thumb::high-five:

The last post was hard. I tried to bulk upload the images and they got scrambled. There is no way to tell what is printed on something as small as the upload thumbnails.

I think I found a problem with one set of tests. My head is spinning from sorting out the tests. Too much thinking. I need to walk away for a while, maybe roll a joint first.

I agree. That's a lot of work for you Canyon, and you have to know how much we appreciate your dedication. I'm gonna catch a serious buzz and look this over. It'll take us a day or two to understand what we're looking at.

It'd be nice to have a terpene test of an infused oil that wasn't FHO, so we could see that comparison. I want to see what terpenes survived that process.

I can't give you reps for that effort until 24 hours has passed since the last time. :kisstwo:

So is the Nova the best method, excluding terpenes?
It did a rather good decarb. I suspect that it will retain more terpenes than most oven methods.

The fact that there is nothing to do except put buds in it and push a button is really nice. I am not sure of the price but it is high enough that it is more like a luxury item than a necesity.

I am holding a small jar of buds in carrier oil that I ran in the Nova, so using it to decarb oil is not tested yet unless someone shows up with there own tests.

I never know

Apparently I have the wrong test 12 posted. this is the correct one.

Take a look at tests 9 through 12 and post 109. Number 9 shows that there was only about a 10% decarb. Number 11 looks like it does not match up with 9 at first. However, the CBGA would convert to THCA. The CBD and CBG may not be meeting the minimum threshold to be indicating in the infusion.

The therpenes in the infusion are not being infused at the same percentages or are being lost at diferent rates. That makes sense because they are different weights and sizes.

The flower sample had 209.3mg/g and the 50g wet would be about 10g dry.

10 X 209.3mg = 2.093g total cannabinoids.

200 X 10.44mg = 2.176g total cannabinoids would be in the oil sampled if all of the original 200mg of oil was recovered. OK, so it probably had more water in it. It turns out that the sample vials were 8g and there were 3 taken before the tested sample. That means 24g plus any spills were removed. That is more than 10% of the total at less than the tested infusion. That would add some to the concentration of the tested sample.

Every way I try to work the math, I keep cumming up with good infusion, nearly no decarb and 'to be determined' loss of terpenes.
