Cottage 420's Organic Perpetual Indoor Garden

Some real beauties there, some good photo skills too, nice work overall as per usual lol.

Pulled into a parking lot at my current work location and spotted some horsetail ferns, on Vancouver Island, and I can thank college for plant identification lol. So I picked a bunch and dried them and put them in a paper grocery bag. Still a ways of from starting my grow but how do I use them? Can I put them in my Integrated Pest Mangement spray or should I do a separate treatment to prevent mold? How far into flowering can I use it? What about adding some to a compost tea I wil use as a foliar, any value in that?

Sorry for the bombarding of questions, just excited I found another useful natural plant, and for free lol.

Don't be sorry, that's why we are here.... learn sumtin and bud porn right? :high-five:

Yes on all of that for the Horsetail Ferns.... we dry them and then into jars like we do with buds. Then make a tea just like black tea only put a hand full of fern in a quart jar... let steep and cool then top off the jar with water if its not topped off already then into the fridge. It can keep like that for a few weeks.

What I do yes add about a 1/4 cup to your normal IPM, can also spray on separately if you want to... I just add it to IPM. If I'm going to foiler may as well do the whole deal. Good to spray them say 1x a week in VEG along with the IPM, then yes in flower you can foiler as long as you want to.. I stop IPM in flower say 2 or 3 weeks before chop. Unless of course I would be having an infestation of some sort. Usually not infestation....

The idea is that the Horsetail Fern Tea kills the mold spores that get into the pre-flowers, then when the buds form those spores get buried deep in the middle of the buds then the growing conditions improve for mold... damp dark and very little air flow = mold. Kill the spores so they can't get a hold and the plant will fight off the rest. Horsetail Fern contains a huge amount of silica which boosts plants immune system so they can fight off pests and disease more effectively.

Horsetail Ferns have a long history with human cultivation similar to cannabis actually. There's very very many plants that have been cultivated by humans for 10s of thousands of years and this is one as is cannabis. There are many many more.... Horsetail Fern is a major part of Biodynamic gardening.

Horsetail Fern tea is #508 in the Biodynamic paradigm .. they get a little wild with the organic gardening but I find it interesting and unusual but VERY helpful. For anyone that cares, biodynamic farming is very similar to organic farming with the exception that biodynamic farming is focused on soil fertility over time so they treat soil as a renewable resource. This is how we garden. I focus on the soil and recycle it thru composting. With Organic farming this in not a requirement, but to get a crop or compost certified "biodynamic" this is a requirement (recycle the soil thru composting) and why I like Malibu BU blend compost (IF I was buying bagged).

Here's a link to the Horsetail Fern #508 Q&A ... answers all your questions and then some It's a PDF if you cant read it I can post it here just let me know. It's not a very long article.

Very nice Bob, the labyrinth looks really frosty. I sure do love that Devil's Tit too. The leaves on her are mesmerizing.

I was "testing" some buds last night.. smells like coffee more than cannabis right now... still early tho. I got snickered... laughing/giggle for no reason. Pretty nice chin band, think head band but around my mouth and lower head and my mouth and tongue numb after 1st puff.. pretty potent and it's only going to get better.

My wife and I were having a discussion I think it was somewhat serious and I just started laughing uncontrollably .... sorry sorry sorry, I'll stop laughing now... hahahahaha. Oops. I think the discussion topic got changed....

Buds dried to a nice bright lime green after trim with dark amber pistols (reminded me of Thai Stick). Not totally impressed with the yields (2.5 zips on the first plant dry) but totally impressed with the effects. I want to grow this one again now. It's not the easiest plant to grow, they all took a while to show sex and I went thru about 2 weeks where I couldn't tell the males from the females after the 12/12 switch. That was a little stressful.

It's like 60/40 Indica sativa but I didn't get any of that fog in the AM and actually got a GREAT nights sleep but did get the munchies. All good, I love crackin' some pistachios .... healthy snackin...munchies covered.

i love this site

Thanks for stopping by.... hang tight there's going to be a lot of action here with harvest coming up very very soon!

Yes im watching this one closely

I did a prelim smoke report up there ^^^... rate it top shelf, bag appeal is very nice with the lime green coloring and the coffee undertone smells .... and A+++ meds.

Sure making some interesting color. Keepem Green

Thanks Woody.. .not sure those are the colors I'm looking for tho, lets see what happens. More coming..

Just my little 2 cents... You need to get rid of the spores 100% while plants are in veg and you can treat every inch of leaf with whatever you use... I've been using a good washing down with that green cleaner once really good before bringing in to flower. Filtered air!! Dustshroom. Hell any good filter the works down to spore size.. A once of preventive equals a pound of cure. Something like that..If you put 100% PM free plants into a 100% clean room equals 100% PM Free. Same with bugs. Sounds good...Hard thing to do when you have a perpetual grow going on. I only get one shot a year to clean the room. Stupid me I'm going to fight the hotter weather of the year this flip. I'm sure not going to get any good colors.

Alittle fertilizer outta whack... Is a odd color being as young as she looked. How far is that pinkish thing in flower? She looks 3 weeks?
Buds are looking great. Keepem Green

100% there Woody... so far this summer no mold on any flowers... the ways its been since I started with the Horsetail Fern tea... but I've got a BIG Chemdawg lady about to chop... thats the plant I always get some on this time of year. So fingers X'd.

That pinkish yellow plant is about 40 days in flower.. this is the way it ran the last time... I almost threw it away but the last week the buds get fat and frosty ... the whole time before 40days .. spindly and small then shift into high gear... my soil is tired I think tho. I've got clones going and they are getting HUGE.

That plant is weird... same soil in all the containers and this one does this.... its primo Sativa ... actually a little strong for me I have to switch to something else after a little bit. I should just smoke that when I'm going to do some work around the house instead of my happy hour weed!

I wish I had that problem , " cannabis being to strong " lol must be a tough issue to deal with . Lol

Those round leaves on top is the plant starting to Re-VEG... something going on with environment. Lights maybe on after lights out as you mentioned.. it doesn't have to be totally dark but if there's a light say from a power strip or something else - infra-red .. usually it's a blueish light that causes re-veg.

That's my experience talking.. I've seen that before when I ran a plant over 110 days and let the soil dry out too much (on vacation) and the plant re-veged and it looked like that. Took cuttings right off the top buds and chopped and got good clones... HTH

Hey blazinjones looks to me like a reveg check your timer and look for light leeks

Agreed, I bumped my mechanical timer the other day and barely pushed a few of the timer notches in and it triggered my lights to come on. They werent even pressed in all the way and still extended my light cycle. They're very sensitive. That would be my first guess. I always ask about ducting when some one has light leak issues. The full silver aluminum ducting leaks light really bad and I would never recommend it.

Ok thanx man now tht u mention a blue light I'm positive its from me switchn the lights on to check them and everything plus there where a few times wen the timer messed up and the light stayed on acouple hours xtra but on a good note I see my buds have bulked up almost double the size they where 2days ago so maybe this was a blessing in disguise lol at least I hope so even my pineapple skunk tht I harvested half n let the other half keep growing she is now throwing out a bunch more white pistals n about to start foxtailing any day now if not already I'll check again wen I turn the lights on but yea now wen I turn lights off I did go in there for nuthn if I forgot to get pics or anything I jus wait 12 hours lol n do whatever it is with lights on but yea man thanx a lot for the help :Namaste:

Some plants seem to be especially sensitive to any lights at night. It's funny, I veg my plants in a 4X4 in the office. Well, what I call one anyways... But I leave the door open to them throughout veg. I am going somewhere with this,,, but now my outdoor girls grown out back have 'light leaks' all over the place. Streetlights, hell during a full moon, it looks like daytime out there. Lights from windows all kinds of light. Yet they flower. My indoor girls during flowering have the overhead greenlight for when I need it. I've only had acouple hermies that I think was due to leaving that light on for an hour or two. Just an odd plant here and there. Now, where I'm going is my outdoor girls are 'hardened off' against the light leaks. As are my indoor plants are from the door being open. To them that green is darkness. I think it helps for the stray white light that gets in there. Now you take a plant,,, veg it in a tent under strict lighting regiment. Total total darkness for 8 hours a day, I think they are the plants that light leaks really get. Not that I suggest doing this, it works for me. I hear alot bad about using the green light. But I'd sure go in there at night with some duct tape and have a lookie. Sure looks like a reveg. You talk about stressing a plant,, that's one of the hardest on a plant,, reveg. GL

I'm with Woody... I'm not very strict with light leaks I leave the windows open, in the summer lights out at 7PM sun goes down at 9:30 or so.. plenty of light gets in the flower room. Same with my VEG room.. windows open sun comes up before lights on... street lights all that...

Like Woody says.. the plants I think get "used" to what they grow up on, light leaks and not strict dark/light scheduling and plants roll with it a little better I think. I've messed up lighting just about every way possible and have been fine.

The only time I had plants re-veg was when I was away and they weren't watered got way dry feet then watered I got home ... the started re-vegging. How I got started with automated watering.

That's the EXACT stuff I use.. It's from Primier.. the same company that makes Pro-Mix and all the expensive bags. We have a cottage in Ontario... way out in the wilderness and there's peat bogs EVERYWHERE. I've seen the harvesting in person. It's fairly eco friendly. They do cut some trees down to get to the peat bogs. Peat bogs are super cool shit... they float on water and the plants that grow in the bog thro roots down thru the bog and into the water ... mother natures way of Hydro growing.. The hydro method got its start in Canada, I bet the Canadians put 1 + 1 = hydroponic ... they've been doing that since at least the 70s.

There are only a few companies that make this stuff for export (out of Canada). Premier is the largest by far. If you look closely on the bag, somewhere it says "Product Du Canada" or something similar. Its the same exact stuff as the Pro-Mix sans any mycos which we all add in anyway so why pay $30/bag for extra mycos.. oh and BTW the mycos they use is also Premier branded. Premier I believe is the parent company of Mykes .... and Mykes is the company that brought Mycos to the table for the AG community.. first found by a guy named Mike whom was a forestry guy... and Canadian.. fuzzy brain thinks he sold Mykes to Premier and the rest is history as they say.

You see the label on that bag you have there.. in the link ^^^

Don't mind me, I'm one of those wierdo's that can remember a shit ton of useless information. I have 2 friends that have photographic memories, they are my heros. We talked a lot about useless information over beers and buds... a lot of times, too many to remember (for me anyways). :smokin:

Blaze, plants r looking awesome.. the LOS gets better as you harvest and start a new round. The next round gets better as the soil matures. Don't forget to amend the soil with "Nutrient Kit: Re-amend Old Soil" from BAS... I just purchased one of those 25# buckets the other day.

To amend the used soil, add in about 2 cups of EWC mixed in with about 2 cups of the amendment mix. Top dress and mix into the upper layer of soil. This is for a 5-7 gal container.. When I transplant VEG plants into my final container, that's when I amend the soil and add a few tbs of Mykes (Mykos) in the hole before the new plant goes in, water and into flower room.

Then go get your fishing pole...time to go fishing.
