Bob, what ratio of compost to soil do you generally use in your mix?

My soil mix is:

1/3 Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss (the inexpensive stuff from Lowes or HD - read label and look for "Canadian" without additives)

1/3 Humus (home made compost is best) - I've used Coast of Main lobster compost/BU's blend from Malibu (VERY good), my own and mixed all 3 together - this is the most important part of the mix! Get your compost right and you wont have much else to worry about.

1/3 Aeration - I use Perl-lite

Appropriate amount of BAS nutrient mix and rock dust mix...

Water (I use RO water)

That's it.

I run an all organic mix.. not all that many folks running total organically grown cannabis but I'm old school sticking to my roots ... <-- see what I did there! Gonna like the produce.

Pretty plant there Mister BBrown... Hey you probably already said,, but do you run a dehumidifier? What is your R/H running on a average?

Once more pretty ladies... Keepem Green

Twox was here.:circle-of-love:
Some nice plants there Bob, love those labyrinth. Is fern tea something I could buy online? I dont really have a issue with PM and I kinda want to keep it that way and this seems to work well for you..:thumb:

Thanks for the kind words T

Horsetail Ferns grow wild likely where you live. They grow in swampy wet soil. You can also purchase from Amazon ... I've gone local and collected a bunch in season and also bought on-line. Both work.

I'm an organic soil guy, so when I had PM and mold issues growing the wrong strains at the wrong times of the year, and getting mold I did research. Rudolph Steiner (organic guru from turn of 20th century) turns out did a lot of research and the Horsetail Fern Tea was one of his go to's for PM/mold.

It really does work.

Google Rudolph Steiner and Horestail Fern.. crazy shit but hey they didn't have modern tech back then.

I'm a believer in using what mother nature gives us.... get out and take a walk in the woods. I'm always surprised what we find! Stinging nettles is another one.. can be added in with the Horsetail Fern ... silica in spades. Combats the mold and the bugs.

Thanks for the info. Do you run into a lot of insect issues using your compost? I compost for my outdoor veggie garden and my compost is full of bugs. I am apprehensive of using that for an indoor grow. I use the Compost of Maine Lobster compost as well, love that stuff (in my veggie garden). Haven't gotten into the compost into my organic soil yet for cannabis yet.

Well yes there's a ton of bugs in my compost, but once its finished then it sits for a few months and the bugs are gone. You need to start a new pile and let the old one sit and let bacteria, bugs and worms work the magic.

The compost if done properly, will end up being mostly worms castings. I screen mine after its finished and sat for a few months thru a frame with 1/2 wire mesh screen, I just lay the screen op top of my wheel barrow and shovel the compost into the frame and put a glove on or use a spade to work the clumps in then shake the screen. Think mining for gold.. the few scraps left can either be double composted (add them to the new pile) or I throw them into my Bamboo they get lost in there and the Bamboo will make short work of any compost even the course stuff.

Take the wheel barrow full of compost and lay a tarp down and mix in CSPM and Aeration... minerals and amendments, mix and put into large tubs and cover it add a little water ... let sit for a few weeks and done! Soil. I've done this a lot even in indoor containers. You would think that we would have a lot of gnats and other bugs.. I don't really have much issue with that but I use a weekly IPM routine indoors so that takes care of any residuals. Fans fans fans... on the ladies, most insects hate wind they cannot get a good hold and reproduce when they get blown away! You'd be surprised just how effective fans are specially for gnats and spider mites.

It's all good bro.. already movin on! You can use that mix... add in some more straight peat moss (as much as the sunshine mix you added in. The BAS mix already has Ca (Calcium) in there based on the amount of straight up Peat Moss... since the Sunshine mix is "part" CSPM and then adds in Ca and some other goodies its diluted a little and has Dolomite Lime added ... kinda a double sided sword. What you can do and I recommend it, is taking that mix you made and run one plant and see what happens. Take the rest and just add in more peat moss and a little compost/EWC... dilute the extra Ca.

As I've said a lot of times here, Dolomite lime ... it's ok for outdoor gardening but in containers we end up with WAY too much Mg (Magnesium) and eventually IN CONTAINER growing, this will rear its ugly head sooner or later and you won't know what's wrong.

Think about it. growing plants for 4 months and finding out during or at the end of the 4 months you're plants aren't healthy big and fat flowers and you have insect infestation to make matters even worse. That's a lot of time wasted. I can't afford to take those chances, as I've already made lots of mistakes doing just what you wanted to do.

What will happen when you mix ingredients, the "recipe" is geared towards exactly what's in the recipe. When we want to sub in ingredients, Coots always told us that if you want to add or sub in something, be POSITIVE its for a good reason and not just because the guy at the Hydro shop told you to use something.

If you don't have a good horticultural reason for subbing... step back.. figure it out or ask.

Best to ask me here in my journal as I don't always check my PMs and don't get msgs that I have a PM. Plus asking me in my journal, we can share knowledge and experience everyone can benefit, right?

Blaze.. I did and experiment with a few clones that I had that were extra. Ran them in a different grow space to see if I could get that clawing down/upside down canoeing. Figured it out, its from not enough water. My ladies in my flower room drink at least a gallon a day or very close in the summer during flowering. The girls I tested I only gave them like a quart a day or even less... they all did that claw down and small flowers..mostly small green leaves and very little buddage. I upped the watering and the plants are back to normal and looking a lot better.

So I'm thinking that when folks do that "flush" thing and it seems to work ... could be that finally the ladies are getting the proper amount of water and we "think" the flush is doing something else when in fact maybe the plant is finally getting the water she requires at the right time.

Pretty plant there Mister BBrown... Hey you probably already said,, but do you run a dehumidifier? What is your R/H running on a average?

Once more pretty ladies... Keepem Green

Hey there Woody.. no dehumidifier. Finally broke down and fired up the AC in the flower room. Last few days we were at 90% RH and the temps were lower.. that's a recipe for disaster, so fired up the AC now down to 45% and high 80s day and 70s night time now. Kinda similar to you outdoors in October, RH is higher that temps and then the rains come.... no good. It's like sleeping in a wet towel.. gonna get some funky shit growing sooner or later.

The ladies didn't seem to mind the temps and RH, but I got a little skiddish. The plants outside in the neighbors garden have PM all over them, so the spores are everywhere now. My garden not so much cause I spray with the Horsetail Fern tea... even outside. It really works.

Thanks for stopping by.. please invite me to your next indoor grow... I know you got the itch and electric issues straightened out so expecting some EPIC Black Dog in your future. Thinking about getting some of that gear going in September for the early fall run. You set the bar pretty high on your last round.. :high-five::passitleft:

Ok here's some weird shit... Running a Devils Tit clone and she's a REAL fast finisher, last round it was 50 days maybe.

Here's a pic of a few top flowers, gotta strange feeling my soil is kaput... I'll do an EWC/kelp meal/alfalfa meal tea.. and see what happens. Damn I hate chasing my tail... It's all good, she's prolly jealous of her room mate beside her chemdawg the flopper! hahahahaha

And here's the pics from the first round this is a lot later in flower but not much green... missing some N me thinks:

Chemdawg clone.."The Flopper", I think she's looking over at the DT and sayin... hey girl you better get moving cause we don't have all summer! shhhh I didn't say it in the room.. didn't even think about it in the room. But I'm thinking that maybe I felt the same back when the first round of DT was getting going. fingers crossed... I even think I did the same tea last round... shit should have taken better notes.

I'm thinking this one is a Chem clone.... but I thought that last round! Labels fell off.. all 3 of them??? Oye....

Labyrinth #1 - getting REAL close, was going to chop tonight... saw more foxtails and said to self, maybe tomorrow ... again. I shouldn't do that. Sometimes foxtails are a sign of baddies (mold) inside the flowers. I did give the ladies a Malted Barley tea the other day, that can for sure bring on the foxes.

Labyrinth #3 spiraling up and up frosty with some clouds and a few amber... she's also close and foxing.

Close up... our new camera on my PC I can actually zoom in and get way down close and see the color of the trichomes...I'll try some of that and post next.

Yo you didn't say you a master at growing these sexy plants I'm looking at? ....

Some real beauties there, some good photo skills too, nice work overall as per usual lol.

Pulled into a parking lot at my current work location and spotted some horsetail ferns, on Vancouver Island, and I can thank college for plant identification lol. So I picked a bunch and dried them and put them in a paper grocery bag. Still a ways of from starting my grow but how do I use them? Can I put them in my Integrated Pest Mangement spray or should I do a separate treatment to prevent mold? How far into flowering can I use it? What about adding some to a compost tea I wil use as a foliar, any value in that?

Sorry for the bombarding of questions, just excited I found another useful natural plant, and for free lol.
