Carnival: A Community Grow Experience

Good morning Sue and all. I just moved my second carnival into flower. They are 2 weeks apart. I do trim the sugar leaves (not for bag appeal) but because it is my understanding that smoking them makes the bud harsher. That being said, it all goes into my coconut or grapeseed oil infusions. I also chop up the stems from recently chopped plants and add that to the mix too. IT all makes very potent infused oils. :circle-of-love::peace:

So you do more of a full plant approach? I'll have to toss in some stem next time. I've been getting lazy and forgetful. :cheesygrinsmiley: Have you ever tried stripping the 'bark' and chopping it up instead of the whole stem?

I take the dry stems and cut them into 1/2" pieces and add them to the mix. There are lots of trichomes on the "bark" :circle-of-love::peace:

I forgot to update my Carnival

Happy happy plants TheRedDragon

Dave, I've heard that about sugar leaves, but when I test smoked straight sugar leaves, I got no more harshness than from smoking the bud. If there was anything different, the sugar leaves were tastier than the bud.

Maybe with hydro or different techniques the leaves gather up something harsh, but with Clackamos Coot's LOS soil and with Doc Bud's Kit, and always bud washing, the sugar leaves are magnificent - about 1/4 of the way between bud and kief, and that's a good thing :)

Tastiest smoke I ever had was Blue dream sugar leafs.
Was in the fridge for some weeks to make hash but as we run out of stuff ....

Oh, I want to try Blue Dream sooooo bad. MagicJim just started a new journal with a tent full of Blue Dream clones that he's planning to seed. Made my heart go pitter-pat when I read that. :laughtwo:

The girl   :loves   her blue dream. I actually bought her a few grams the other day because she loves the stuff. The rest of us - meh.

My Carnivals are coming along very nicely. :battingeyelashes:

Carnival 3 is now 57 days old. She's got another 4-5 weeks to veg. I'm waiting for the latest CBD Critical Cure to be harvested so I can give the girls their own tents to flower in.

She's gonna be a beast.

Carnival 4 is my latest hempy adventure. Tead convinced me to try Osmo Plus this time, and I'd have to admit she's the happiest Carnival I've sprouted. Looks like this one may be an indica dominant, though it's really too early to tell. Something about the sweet scallops on the leaf edges is giving it away for me. :cheesygrinsmiley:

She's 29 days old. She'll probably be ready to flower at about the same time Carn 3 is ready. Oooo..... A tent full of Carnival. :slide:

I've been thinking it's time to start mothers. I'm settled into my photo strains of choice, and the best way to manage the flow may be to get a couple mothers going and maintain them as bonsais. I have both phenos running here, from the looks of it. The opportunity is too good to pass up. I know for sure I want to hang onto the sativa-leaning pheno, so that one, if no others, I will start as a mother.

Here are my latest 2 clones.

This one is 1 week into flower. I will take a clone from her in another week.

Wouldn't it be easier and faster on the clone to take it now?
Less of the plant has converted to flowering mode so far, so there is less stress to reveg, right?

(Sorry if I've asked before - I feel I might have asked already.)

It is called monster cropping.

I have limited space for my perpetual garden. My Veg tent is only 2x2 and my flower tent 3x3. By taking 1 clone about day 14-15 of flower, I get a clone stat starts like this.

After a couple weeks it looks like this. You can see some of the single bladed leaves.

Then we get this.

20170430_181310_resized_1_.jpg

And you end with this in flower.

Monster Cropping make you clones very bushy with lots of side branches. This way, I have a plant that I am chopping about every 2 weeks and getting 3-4oz per plant. :circle-of-love::peace:

This is excellent, and just what I needed to see. I'm working on getting the hang of scheduling, and as you know, my tents are both 2x2. This Monster Cropping is a great option. How long do you veg them? I think I asked you on my thread and it may have gotten lost in the flurry of posts, but are you still spraying the essential oils during flowering?

First off, my veg tent will hold 2 7gal smart pots and up to 6 1 gal pots. I have 2 Mars 400, 1 over the 1 gal pots and 1 over the 7.

My weeks start on Sunday. The girls get drenched on Sunday morning and Brix/wayahead in the afternoon. I will take a clone on Day 15 of flower and put it in the cloner. I use my cloneking 25 Aeroponic cloner. There are DIY threads here too. Within 1 week I have roots starting and by the end of 2nd week it is ready to move to a 1 gal smart pot. Within 2 weeks you start getting the funky 1 blade leaves. They usually spend 4-6 weeks in 1 gal pots. Then move to 7 gal for 4 weeks. Everything is happening in two week intervals. When 1 get chopped, the oldest girl in the 7 gal gets moved and another one is ready to get upsized. Sunday's can be busy days.

I try to time things that I alternate harvests between Sativa dom and indica dom strains.

I am trying to run Doc's kit as close to perfect as I can so I have shelved the essential oils for now. :circle-of-love::peace:

Thank you Dave, for that thorough answer. :hugs:  I'm also trying my best to get the particulars of kit cultivation down, so I've also not been using the spray, but in my case it was more that I forgot it was there. :laughtwo:

We're trying to get the same flow going too, but I have the new advantage of a new veg area for the photos. That should make all the difference to me. With another patient to supply this means I need to grow more Carnival and more CBD strains, and both of my patients have a fondness for an indica high, so I'm working one into the schedule as well. I think I'll probably settle into something in the neighborhood of a harvest every month or so. Still working all that out.

It's obvious you have the kit pretty well figured out. :battingeyelashes:

Two Carnivals, two mediums, two stages, but both got topped today.

Carnival 4 (Day 31), growing in a hempy pot loaded with Osmo Plus. I'm really excited about this plant, both for the ease of this simplistic growing method, but also because the taste of the top was unlike any Carnival I've topped or trimmed before her. Carnival is obviously high in limonene, there's no denying that, but as far as I know we have no lab results on a Carnival, so it's kinda anybody's guess what else is in the profile. Well, this one has a strong expression of linalool, something that caught me off guard. That taste hasn't been obvious in any of my Carnivals to date. I recognized it because I frequently eat an occasional lavender leaf, and they're loaded with linalool.

Carnival 3 (Day 59) had the same generic cannabis taste I usually get when I eat the fresh tops. I'll be topping both at least one more time during their veg stages, so I'll be interested in seeing if there any change.

She still has at least a month to go before she gets flipped. I talked it over with TheRedDragon and we felt topping her to try for 16 tops would be a decent plan to increase yield. She'll have her own tent to flower in when she gets flipped, but that can't happen until the CBD Critical Cure is harvested, or I decide to flip her alone and shift the other plant into my new veg area under the T5s. I forgot that was an option. Lol!

Ok, time to shift to Callanetics and work on the trophy wife bod. :laughtwo:

It is called monster cropping.

Couldn't have timed this better. I realized today, after topping the leaders, that I'd neglected to reset the timer to 20/4 when I transferred the two vegging plants into one of my flowering tents to finish vegging for another month.

That was a week ago. She's been under 12/12 for just over a week, and I didn't realize it until tonight when I heard the lights click off at the wrong time. It never crossed my mind that I'd ignored the little voice telling me to reset the timer before I closed the tent up.

You can bet that would be my rule from now on. These tents were planned for flowering, and my mind didn't let the exception register until it was too late. I'll use Dave's monster cropping technique and save the pheno, then make that one yield enough to make up for this mistake.

It's not what happens but how we react. I did well with this misstep and resisted the urge to beat myself up. Almost immediately I remembered Dave posting this. Talk about good timing. :hugs:
