Cannafan's Perpetual Grow - Where Everything Changes - Autos - Photos - Seeds & More!

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow - Where Everything Changes - Autos - Photos - Seeds & M

Beautiful as always Canna! I find myself almost halfway back to my garden and had to come see what was up in my favorite places! And of course things look awesome in here!

Can't wait to get back into the normal swing of things. I sure hope this finds life fantastic!

Accidental triple tops after topping. I think this boo boo when I topped this Custard Cream turned out to be something I am going to do again.
I apparently didn't pinch off that center top completely when I topped it. The result is that there is one shoot growing from the topped part and the two shoots off the sides of it. I have a triple effect now.

Well, look at you girl. Doing the improbable again. That's so cool. Think you can learn to duplicate that consistently?

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow - Where Everything Changes - Autos - Photos - Seeds & M

I did a "Half Topping" on another top to see if I can replicate. Don't know what's up with the color on this pic, but it doesn't look like that. LOL
We'll see what happens.

Hey Sista, is that called Fim or something else?

Hey Sista, is that called Fim or something else?

I think it's a FIM. My understanding is that a FIM cuts off most of the area, but not all of it in order to encourage new growth that can be fimmed again?. A topping cuts off all of the center stem part to promote growth on either side for new tops?
Maybe someone can pop in with a definition that makes sense. LOL
Whatever the difference actually is, I just snip what I think needs snipped. ;-)

Here's an update on the Fast N Vasts'.

The one I saved is doing good:

Grafting attempt 1

Well, I got to thinking on that triple top plant and how that center one sort of weaved itself back together......and decided...WTH? Let's try a graft.

One of the Master Kush plants has a very wide and thick center where the branches have new growth after the topping:

graft_3.jpg

So, I cut a little v shape cut right smack in the center of it cutting off the left over piece from the topping, dropped some water in there to keep it from drying out anywhere. Then I cut a small shoot from the Custard cream plant and put it in a cup of water so she could soak up some moisture before the join.

I put some stick skewers in place and used those to prop the cutting up, I cut an angle cut on the cutting stem and pushed it inside the v cut on the big plant:

A few drops of water on that, and it is really sitting quite securely:

I also took the LST ties off the two big plant stems so they will grow upward in hopes of sealing the cutting into place.

I will keep drops of water on the join throughout the day to be sure it has plenty of moisture for a while.

Even if it starts drooping severely I will leave it go and give it time. Ya never know.......

Best of luck on the graft :)

Thanks! I have my doubts, but I also couldn't NOT try it. LOL

Thanks on the fimming, I guess that's actually what I did then. And I'll do it some more.

I have my doubts on the graft also - but these are resilient plants !

The key to grafting is to align the layer just under the skin where the tubes carry nutrients up and down the stem. When the plant knits these areas together, a graft can transport nutrients. On your graft, I only see the surface matching in 2 small places.

Yep, I agree. After I uploaded that pic I looked at it and felt it needed to be more evenly seated. I went in and did some adjustments.
It's in there now. LOL

The leaves are wilting, but I expected that. We'll see. My next attempt is not going to be in an area like that, it will be stem to stem after I see how Light Addicts' goes.
If I see the little branch is completely dying, I'll put her in some rockwool and water and try to root it. I've pretty good success with that.

I was going to take a couple of clones off the Custard Cream anyway, so it will all work out.

I really don't think this is going to work.....but I had to try it.

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow - Where Everything Changes - Autos - Photos - Seeds & M

The graft was a fail. Overnight the stem of the cut piece shrunk away from the inserted area. Ah well, it's now in a cup of water then it will go into some rockwool.
The Custard Cream plant is growing new shoots where I topped it for the graft experiment, so no loss there. These plants recover so quickly!

So, on to graft experiment #2 later today.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Bad luck on your first attempt Canna, my first go still looks to have taken, fingers crossed still though :)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed with you my friend! What happens with yours directs me in future attempts. I'm going to do something similar to your current one today. :) I have a flexible straw that I'm going to try out....more later.
These plants will be in veg for quite awhile, so I think it's a perfectly opportune time to do this.

Graft Experiment #2

Same plants, Master Kush is the receiver and the Custard Cream is the cut.

This time I followed something I saw online. First I cut a branch off the MK and put that in rockwool for a clone later.
Then using an exacto knife I cut a slit in the stem. I put a soaked piece of root plug on it to keep it moist until I was ready for it:

graft_9.jpg

Next a cutting from the custard cream. The instructions were to just scrape the sides of the bottom of the cutting in a v-ish shape.

graft_8.jpg

Insert the cutting into the slit on the stem and I wrapped a piece of straw around it. The end of the cutting is being supported with a coat hanger stake to keep it in one place.

graft_6.jpg

Then used a clothespin to hold the connected areas together. It was just tight enough for a little pressure without squishing it:

graft_7.jpg

I put a few drops of water down the straw, then spritzed her up and made a little humidity dome from one of my food grade cheap plastic gloves making sure it wasn't leaning on the leaves or the cutting:

Graft_5.jpg

In the above picture it doesn't show the clothespin, I first tried a pipe cleaner....didn't like it.

Now we wait. What I read said that it can take anywhere from 5 days to two weeks for the graft to grow together.

The cutting is now waiting to root:
