Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

Ahhh....that explains it. It's private. Wasn't looking for anything in particular, I just pop around on others' blogs now and then when I see they have one. I learn lots of different things doing that.

:circle-of-love:

It isn't that it's important or even private stuff, in fact I have never written anything. I just "accumulate stuff." (You oughta see my garage :-)
By the way, from one of your an earlier posts today, I'd be willing to bet that our zip codes are less than 300 miles apart :thumb:

I got 6ml of Grand Daddy Purple today, but I cheated and added 1ml of REALLY thick stuff I had from before. Figured it might help the consistency. But what is really neat is that out of 2 - 750ml bottles of EverClear "151", I got back a bottle and a half so at $20 per bottle I just reduced my out of pocket expense for the still by $30. (I'd like to know what percentage alcohol it is but not enough to order a meter.)

And, you won't have as much water to deal with on the next run. Congrats on the success today. :)

On the zip codes, when I lived on the state lines it was about 30 years ago now. However, I'm still close enough to the lines to make a trip easily if needed.

My used syringes were tough to clean with the residue on the caps and such. I put some rubbing alcohol in a jar and put the syringes and tops in there, left it sit for an hour or so and swirled it around a couple times. Rinsed them in hot water, and they're perfectly clean now.
The R. alcohol worked to clean off utensils and the ss cup too, by soaking them in it.

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

I am just about to order a book called "The Cannabis Spa at Home". There is a Kindle version as well as hardcover. Under $12.00

75 recipes in it, and most of the recipes use the oil.

Anybody have that one, if so...whatcha' think?

First off, her decarb process is done at 300 degrees F. Isn't that too high? I've always been told not to go over 250.
She has an interesting way of making the oil as well, I'll post more on that later.

Well, here I was concerned about posting the video using the distiller that I had found on youtube, remember Johnny?

ROFL, it's right here on this site posted in 2011: (so I'm guessing it's safe to post a link to a thread here. LOL)

Lol. I saw that video a long time ago on YouTube. Is that the still everyone's talking about?
Quick question, why are we not using the essential oil distiller instead?

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

It is too high. She's converting THC into CBN. She's also losing a ton of terpenes & oil.

I would agree. I flipped around the net to find out about boiling points of cannabis or what temp it starts to degrade, and found a chart that was created in 2001.
I'm thinking that is what she was going by. That chart had it listed in the 350-392 degrees range.
I'll stick with the slow and low temp to preserve the goodies.

Yep, a lot of people saw that video. Me included, and had completely forgotten seeing that when I joined here. I was concerned that it was kind of advertising in the end, figured it wouldn't be allowed.

Edit: I should say the seller stated it could be used for extracting oils. That's another reason I wanted this one, but mostly for the reclaiming.
Don't know why you couldn't do essential oils in this.
Anybody say ney?

The video says to use "essential oil distiller" or "Water distiller", and it looks exactly like what I have (the white one) Mine came with the glass jar, not the plastic collection container. I'm wondering if there is a physical difference in the two. Maybe that's the modified one that was talked about recently?

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

Just a word of caution on what that video shows. He kept lifting the lid to check the level of the liquid. That's some burning hot steam coming out of there. I think it's safer to mark the collection bottle at the 80% mark as wildjim said, than to keep lifting that top and take a chance on a steam burn. Practice is going to let you know exactly when to turn that thing off before it gets too low.

Momma hen....at it again.....

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

The essential oil distiller takes 12 hours to distill 1 gal of water as it only heats to a low temp.

The water distiller heats too much & too fast to keep terpenes, flavinoids, etc. for cannabis.

So, everyone's buying the water still to reclaim alcohol only, when for a little more, you could do way more?

Yep, that's the modified one you are talking about. I'm looking right now at what the actual temperature is for the regular water distiller. The video shows you can use either one.

Edit: All I can find is that one runs hotter than the other.
I think we talked about this before on the thread. Can't remember exactly who was discussing it though.

WildJim, what's your thoughts? You've had yours awhile now.

I seriously want to understand the actual temperature the liquid is inside the unit when it's in full swing.
Guess I'm going to have to use the thermal thermometer in there tomorrow while I do some water distilling to find out for sure.

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

I see the water distiller is not a closed system. There is a vent that releases chlorine gases when it operates. That means it's venting ethanol if you put alcohol in it.
The oil distiller they make is a closed loop system. No leaking ethanol.
I know y'all are are using the water distiller with no problems, but there is a potential one with the internal gas vent. It's not made for alcohol use. The water distiller also has plastic where the oil still doesn't.

I personally would go with the essential oil distiller. You can even make tinctures in it, much less our CCO.

I would love to have gone with the modded one, but I couldn't find one that I could afford.
Maybe next year.

The venting system, I knew about that. I decided to run mine on the counter next to the stove where there is a hooded exhaust/ vent fan to take it outside. Even before I did that I didn't get even a hint of ethanol or alcohol smell other than when I opened the unit. I believe I said way early on here to do this outside. :)

I'm still going to use the thermometer on this tomorrow. The infrared thingy. I want to know what that temp is. :thumb:

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

The mods to the water still are to solder over the gas vent & use a variable speed controller to knock the 550w from the water still down to 300+w in the oil still. That's a decent jump for this kind of appliance.

Good info. :thanks:

I won't even go into how to modify that at home. Dangerous....no no no no...

re: Cannabis Oil Users Cafe & Lounge

I have the option of running mine on the balcony, so I wasn't concerned about the venting. I'm waiting to hear wildjim's take on this, because my impression was that he's pretty happy with the performance. I couldn't find a comparable one for essential oils. Anybody see one?

No but my wife needed one for water and I will occasionally sneak a batch in so it was an easy choice for me, I'm not buying two of them.
