BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

congrats on the chop and beautiful buds...how do they smell?
have you had this strain before?
:)

Thanks, the beautiful buds are a testament to Doc Bud's High Brix. The smell? I have found that the smell changes. During the grow Critical x AK47 was a peppery citrus, Mazar was a very odd smell, pungent, smelled very chemically if that makes sense, maybe like a fuel smell a little bit. Stacked OG Kush I honestly don't know how it smells, it's scent never seemed to me to be as strong as the other two, although they may be overpowering it. Only Critical x AK47 is dried at this point. It's been in the jar for the cure and I haven't really paid it much attention. Opening the jar is not super fragrant as I would expect, but if you put some buds in a baggie they really come alive after a bit. Weird.

Have I had this strain before? Nope. Where I am from you buy stuff and are told it's this or that, but there is never any way to know for sure. The only strain I can say I am pretty sure I have had was Blue Dream. Something I plan to grow as soon as these autos finish up.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

I remember the fuel smell of the mazar sharif that you are talking about. The mazar also had a growing style for me that made it look alien. Weird shiny green with sharp edges flowers that looked almost insectoid. But that smell lingers in my mind like it was yesterday instead of 20 years.

Shig the smell is unmistakeable! It hits you like nothing I can really even describe beyond pungent, chemically, fuel type smell. Wish you were here brother, the Mazar just went in jars today and I would love to have you tell me if it brings back those fond memories.

As stated, Mazar is in the jar. Might be a little early, sitting at 65% humidity right now, we will see what it says in the morning. That leaves Stacked OG Kush hanging, should be ready for jars Sunday or Monday if my math is correct.

I will give some weights of the harvests so far. Now there has been sampling and whatnot, so the weights are on the lighter side, but I like to have a measure of sorts.

Critical x AK47 42 grams
Mazar 64 grams

Stacked OG Kush is really looking like it's going to be the monster of the group. I am hoping to see 100+ grams from it, although that may be optimistic. Only time will tell.

Being my first grow I am very pleased with the results I have gotten. I made plenty of mistakes and the plants still came out well. I still have to toy with training/pruning/topping and figure out what works best for me, but if things keep improving I see nothing but green pastures ahead. I am so thankful for everyone that comes here and offers their words of help and encouragement, I couldn't have gotten here without you guys.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Alright guys, I am going to let everyone in on what's currently going on now that the original plants are all finished up. I am running autos this round. Originally planted a few in 5 gallon pots then was advised that 7 gallon pots were a better idea in High Brix. Transplanted a 2 or 3 autos no problem, the third one I lost during the transplant. Lost track of the seed and taproot completely. So I instead planted a new seed as well as two others in 7 gallons for a total of 5 plants in 7 gallon pots. Bubblegum, Blackjack, 2 Critical Jacks, and Dark Devil. The seed I lost was Northern Lights. I planned to grow out 4 plants, planted 5 in case I had an issue with one. I knew it would be a possibility that Northern Lights would make it. Low and behold I had two little sprouts pop up in one of my pots today. So now I have 6 plants in a 4'x4' tent, going to be packed if all 6 make it through the grow.

5 out of 6 plants are above ground. Dark Devil is really dragging her feet, so we will see what happens here in the next few days.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Your method of keeping the tent away from the humidifier thingy is very shiggityfliplike haha.

Yeah, my tent is always under negative pressure, but that humidifier has intakes on the bottom front and back, so I want to make sure I make it as easy as possible to keep the humidity where I want. I was sitting here one day and just looking around for the first thing that did the job. That bottle was headed for the trash and does a great job. Bought the humidifier hoping it would have enough output to run on a lower setting and keep humidity up. Not the case. It does the job, but has to be kept on high. It does hold 4 gallons of water, so that's nice.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Alright, a little update. Dark Devil finally popped up, so got 6 out of 6 up and running. Feeling good about that. As stated before, I am running a 1000 watt HID dimmed down to 75%. At 1000 watts it's hard for me to control temps without manually opening and closing the vents at the beginning and end of the light period. I have thought about trying some LED lights for a while to combine with my HID and see how the heat is. Through another post on the forum I found out that some older Mars Hydro panels were on sale for $63 shipped, so I picked up two and will put them in the tent on either side of my air cooled reflector. I am hoping this provides better light below the lights while directing most of the heat from the LEDs above the lights. It will also give me much better lighting around the front and back of the tent which is generally a weak spot. I am excited to add the LEDs and see if I notice a difference in quality or yield. Really hoping it will help the yield and density of my buds. Here's to hoping!

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Oh it will help for sure! Two of them is another 260 real watts in the garden. Nice upgrade.

I have the extra wattage from the HID if I need it, but the heat! Hoping the LED helps out. Also interested in the different type of light emitted to see if that has any effect.

I got the final numbers in! They are a little slimmer than actual because of sampling, but I don't care.

Critical x AK47 42 grams
Mazar 64 grams
Stacked OG Kush 115 grams

Total 221 grams

I am very happy with the results being my first grow ever. After sampling all of them I do wish I got the most from Mazar as it is a crowd favorite among my circle. Definitely going to run 2 Mazars next round of photos I run.

So I looked it up. Edited for profanity! Epic!!!! BrixNiubi!!!!

" niúbī (nyoo bee), which literally translates to “cow p7&$y” but means “fun kin’ awesome” or “badass” or “really fun kin’ cool.” Sometimes it means something more like “big” and “powerful,” and sometimes it can have the slightly more negative meaning of “bragging” or “braggart” or “being audacious,” but most of the time it means “fun kin’ awesome.”

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Brix, congratulations all around to you!! :bravo:

You're now a Cannabis Snob. :)

I have always been a fan of the highest quality buds, so cannabis snobbery is nothing new to me. Being able to step into it knowing virtually nothing and grow some of the best buds ever is amazing to me! I am a kit guy all the way!

Thanks Major, appreciate you riding along. I am going to have to hold on to the name for a while though.

My Chinese friend tells me there is a slang word that sounds like nyoo bee. It means awesome. So your new name is Brix awesome.

Brix Awesome, I thought that name was reserved for you? We are all anxiously waiting to see what you do with the kit Shig. Appreciate the love and you being here with me.

Cow Vagina out.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas Eve! Unfortunately for me mine started out on the wrong foot. Had a power flicker which led to a hot restart which blew my Hortilux MH bulb. Only about 2 months use on it. Luckily I have a couple cheap backup lights. New Hortilux on the way. Sad times. I have a Phantom II ballast, but I can't seem to get the hot restart protection to ever work.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Craptacular!
Too bad about the ballast not behaving. I use one of those cheapo 110v/220v, 50%/75%/100%/110% jobs. I must say it works great. We have at least one power outage per week. Just a quick blip, but it always waits about 5 minutes and starts up fine. I had the same bulb in for three grows and finally pulled it to use as a backup bulb. During the storms last week it had to restart 8-10 times in one day.
Best of luck with the new one and have a great Christmas regardless.

BrixNewb's Christmas Update!

Merry Christmas Everyone! The tent has undergone some changes and the girls are slowly working their way into grand plants! So first up I wanted to talk about the changes. For the first grow the lighting was a single 1000 watt HID fixture dimmed to 75% due to heat. MH during veg, HPS during bloom, normal stuff there. After reading for a while I started to see the advantage of multiple point sources of light. I have also always been curious about LED lighting and what it could do in terms of helping me manage heat. So that's always been in my mind. It wasn't until recently that I read on this forum that the old style Mars Hydro lights were on sale. The price for a 300 watt (140 watt actual) light was only $63 shipped. I did some thinking and after about a week I decided "What the hell?" and pulled the trigger on two of the 300 watt lights.

I have hung the lights on either side of my HID which is in the center of the tent. This gives me much better lighting along the sides which is always a weak point. I did have to dim my HID to 60% to keep temps around 80 degrees like I like.

And shots of the girls. The lights are about 30 inches from the tops of the plants. I will move them lower once we get some better growth.

Critical Jack #2. The soil is a bit high and this girl just doesn't seem to want to grow up. I am going to fix the soil problem here shortly if there isn't some noticeable growth soon.

Dark Devil

Northern Lights. I believe the droopy leaves were caused by heat stress due to temps getting close to 85 while I was figuring out the lighting. I have tried to be diligent about not overwatering, just winging it but I like them to dry out a little to promote root growth. Time will tell.

Bubblegum. Her first set of leaves came out weird. Had a plant in the first round with the same issue but it was fine.
