BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

I was using the 12 simply to tell how much floor space I had, I wouldn't actually try to run 12 plants in there. 6 was crowded, good to know. I was thinking of doing 5 plants before I realized how much smaller the 5 gallon smart pots are versus the 7 gallons. Sounds like 5 may be the way to go. Thanks Neiko!

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

You would be better in 7's. Those autos don't like to be transplanted so they will be in those containers for a long time. High Brix needs soil!!. I bet you would yield more in fewer 7s than more 5s.

Yes BN......put them big pots, and train them, I have had autos that yielded as much as a photo that vegged for 2 months........:high-five:

I follow A-Train and he had said that he saw no difference in 5 versus 7 gallon on his autos, but he doesn't grow High Brix. Never thought about the difference there.

Roger that, will do. I plan to ponytail them. Haven't thought much beyond that. LST to bring in more light where needed.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

It depends on the strains, but I'd only do 4 plants but in 7 or 10 gal pots.

My current plants are in 7 gallons right now and I find they are a bit heavy to move around when I am doing my drenches. I couldn't imagine going to 10 gallons without having each one permanently in a drench bucket.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

I hear you there. I have all of mine in 10 gallon pots right now and there is no way to move them to a secondary container for drenches. The way I am doing my non HB watering for those pots is to hit them with 1/2 gallon of nutes below and on top and to let that soak in for about 30 minutes. This will make sure that there is a decent amount of water in there and no dry pockets. I then go back and hit them again from the top and let it sit, then do it again. Then I take out the liquid from the saucer before leaving the tent for the day. Maybe not ideal but until they invent saucers with sides that expand and collapse I don't know what else to do.

For my drenches I purchased "foot tubs" or "wash basins" specifically sized for my 7 gallon soft pots. They are large, galvanized buckets. I measured my smart pots and then went and bought the closest size foot tub at the local hardware store. You could just buy a foot tub for each plant and leave them in there the whole time they are in the large pots. Just have to suck out the extra water after drenches.

This might help. :)

The 10 gallon fabric pots are so wide I would hate to add side width to them. It would affect the number of plants I could have in flower lol. The other thing is that I like air to circulate around the smart pot. I also wouldn't use galvanized for a permanent saucer. For your soil dunks I think you are fine. But having water and organic acid in contact with galvanized steel for long periods of time I would be asking for trouble. They do have plastic tubs but again they are much wider on the top.

I feel like my watering gets them pretty darn soaked so it is just a little longer time to do it.i have thought about doubling up some six mil black plastic contractor bags (which I have) and putting them inside my saucers. Then I could set the pots inside and lift the bags when it is time to drench. I would roll the sides of the bag so it wasn't too tall. I then thought about getting some bendable plastic to make cylinders the same size and height as the pots. On drench day I would duct tape the cylinder around the trash bag and hang the rolled up part on the outside of the cylinder and clamp it with those metal clamps you use to hold large amounts of papers together. Drench the plants, then remove the clamps and plastic and roll the bag back down over the outside of the saucer. It would be pretty cool because there would be little waste as the drench container would closely fit the fabric pot. But then I would also get my moving air around the bag after.

Finding the right plastic for cheap is the tough part. Those flexible roll up snow sleds come to mind. I was also thinking that thick pond liner material would work also. Just use the same clamps to clamp it together. Or old school camping sleeping pad. I find so many uses for camping sleeper pads. I have one under my kit soil right now. I am going to move the kit soil onto pink builders foam and maybe try this out next watering.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

So as I was able to put Critical x AK47 into jars recently, Saturday I decided to give Mazar the chop. It was ready to come down. It is much denser than the Critical x AK47 buds, but the buds aren't as fat. I am hoping for 2 ounces from my Mazar plant. I had a friend do a tester of a smaller bud that has been drying and they said that it's very stoney, eyes feel very heavy compared to Critical x AK47.

Still waiting on all three autos to pop up any time now. Germination is the one thing that I am less than comfortable with. I have tried soaking in water, tried the paper towel method quite a bit and the only method that worked for me when I started these plants was popping the seeds directly into the soil, watering and letting them fly. I am hoping these three are slower because they are getting 12 hours of light versus 24 or 18 and also the environment may be a little less humid and hotter.

Here is a sneak peek of Mazar, not really much to look at.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

So today is a Brix day for the one remaining plant I have left, Stacked OG Kush. Opened the tent to find that 2 of 3 of my autos for the next round, both Critical Jack, are above ground. Still waiting on Auto Northern Lights to pop up.

Stacked OG Kush, not sure how to take this one. I don't see any new growth or bulking, but I also don't see any amber trichomes and still has some white pistils. Going by the breeders harvest time it shouldn't be ready for another two weeks. I am going to give it some time, maybe it will push out some more foxtailing. I would be ok with that.

That Mazar looks really nice newb! I'm about ready to harvest a lsd which is mostly Mazar. I don't have a knock out strain so I'm really looking forward to this one.
:goodjob:

Thanks Neiko! I don't remember exactly why I ordered Mazar, it was one of the first orders I placed. I am patiently waiting for it to dry so I can get a couple samples out and get feedback. Being my first grow I am starting from nothing, so I also need some first string strains. I also have LSD from Barney Farms, heard really great things about it so I am looking forward to growing it. I will be sure to post impressions of Mazar here once I get some feedback.

Beautiful bud, Bud! :thumb:

You are too kind Major. I appreciate you coming along for the ride man.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

So today I did a few things to keep the grow progressing. First thing is I opted for a higher output humidifier. Put it in the tent and not seeing much improvement if any. Jury is out on that. I had planted 3 autos in 5 gallon smart pots. Got advice to use 7 gallon pots, so I decided to get reckless and repot them. 2 just popped out of the ground yesterday and one wasn't yet above ground. Tried to be delicate during the process, but I am just not meant for that. The one that wasn't above ground didn't make it. The other two Critical Jack autos, we will see how they recover. I planted a Bubblegum auto, a Black Jack auto and a Dark Devil. So I have the Stacked OG Kush finishing up with 5 other pots in the tent. Everyone told me to only run 4 plants, but last run I lost a plant due to hermie so I rather have that extra cushion.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Well after some chit chat in Doc Bud's thread, I decided it was time to chop Staked OG Kush. This morning I chopped, trimmed, and washed it. Now it's hanging to dry. Here are some pics with Action Figure Therapy's famous Snow.
