BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Congrat's on the new illumination! I have a pair of them as well. I used one on my last grow and the BD that was under it gave me 50% more than the other plants. Might have been the LED, or it might just have been the plant.

Brix, looks great!! :)
Whats your rH around the nursery girls?

Thanks Dr. Z! RH before the new humidifier was around 50%. With the new humidifier I am maintaining mid 50's in the tent but have surprisingly seen an increase into the mid 60's outside of the tent. It could be the weather, but it has been pretty constant regardless of the weather.

Thanks Major. I figure two different types or light and 2 additional sources of light sure couldn't hurt. I was happy with the results from the first round, but I have packed the tent this round, so I figured for the investment it would be worth it. Plus if I don't like the results I can take those two lights and setup another smaller tent.

Thanks Neiko! I actually have Barney Farms LSD beans as well. Excited to get around to them.

So right now the autos are going. They are alive, although 4 of 6 are quite droopy all the time. Any advice is welcome.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Environment steady at 80 degrees during lights on, 70 degrees at night. Humidity about 50% during the day, up to 65% or so at night (only while they are young, about to run dehumidifier at night).

Pots are in a grow tent which is on sheet insulation which is on wood flooring which is on concrete slab.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

I'm guessing the droopiness is from a little seedling in a big pot. It'll take 'em awhile to perk up. My youngsters are spikiest when the soil is a little dry and very well aerated. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I get what you are putting down. I have tried to let them dry out a bit, but with the droopiness I am hesitant. Always worry I will come back to death.

How do we achieve very well aerated soil? Bottom watering?

LOL, we achieve it by NOT watering. :laughtwo: When you put such a small plant in a big pot, watering gets a bit tricky. The pot won't dry out for, like, 2 weeks, but the top will go dry so you get all nervous about that. Underneath, the roots have already reached the bottom in the first few days, and are feasting on all that moisture. The little seedings seem like they'd need some water, but they don't. I don't recall ever seeing anyone who killed a seedling by not watering it, and I've seen countless deaths and illnesses from giving 'em "just a little bit more".

So, if you've been adding water to those pots, cease and desist posthaste! :cheesygrinsmiley:

When it comes time to drench them, bottom watering will help you soak the entire rootball, without leaving any dry pockets. :thumb:

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Tipping the pots really well after the drench helps too. It gets rid of most of that standing water in the bottom and pulls a little air down into the soil.

I wouldn't worry about them at this point. If they still droop with 5 fingered-leaves, I'd start to get concerned.

Thanks for taking the time GT. This is only my second run and first with autos, so I am not used to seedlings in big pots. I will back off and let them have a bit more freedom from water. Thanks.

major..Doc wrote of the PWT (perched water table) a couple of years ago.. it was one of the things that got me very interested in following Doc :)

Yep. Me too. I've thought of wicking my pots but I'm too damned lazy, or I forget when I have the opportunity.

I haven't drenched these yet, only top watered. When I drench I actually drench them really well and then I put slats across a wash basin (foot tub to some) and let them drain for a few minutes before putting them back in their trays in the tent.

I am not too worried, but I wanted to be proactive in case I was messing up. I am going to let them dry out a bit and go from there.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Sounds great!
The tipping helps quite a bit. Give it a try. You may be surprised at how much extra water drains out.

I tip my 1 gallon pots when I water, just never done it with the 7 gallons. I will give it a try and see how that goes.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

I wouldn't worry about dropping RH if it spikes to 65% at lights off either. You actually want it a little higher in veg anyway (50%-70% recommended, I like mine in mid-60's). Your numbers are all in the zone so if they're stable, don't sweat it. Once you start getting some bud formation, you'll want to keep a closer eye on RH as that's usually better if kept a bit lower (40%-60% I keep mine at 55%).

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Well guys, I just don't think autos are for me at this time. I seem to do ok in flower, but I just don't have a clue in veg yet. They are all at least 10 days above ground and they are all way too small and with the exception of one they all look like absolute crap. A few have discolored leaves and spots, I believe this was from soil getting on the leaves. I also am pretty sure I overwatered them. I have attached pictures. Pretty tempted to scrap them and plant some more photos.

re: BrixNewb's First Grow & Beyond

Well heck, BN. Those do look a little sorry (except for the DD).
I'd let 'em ride for a while longer. The size doesn't concern me. Those are big pots for little girls. They are looking for the bottom so all the growth may be invisible. Best of luck, either way you decide to go. Keep the faith!
