Brightlight's Strain Fest: Organics & LED

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Let us know how the surgery went. Take care.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Thank you all very much for your kind words. I sincerely appreciate it. So after the disconcerting phone message on Mon. pm that I could/should have surgery today (Wed), I discussed with surgeon & was happy to learn that since I am not "sick" with infection symptoms, the surgery could be put off a short time. So a welcome reprieve that will allow me to get ready. New date is 3/10. This will be the 4th surgery on the left shoulder & was told it won't be the last. This one is like a "temporary" shoulder replacement to get rid of the infection. Major in any event. The surgeries have never been bad since I'm out cold. The hell starts when I wake up & goes on for nearly 2 months. But thanks again for your concern & thoughts.

One thing I can now do is transplant my seedlings into their 2 gal. pots. Here is a bit of info on what I try to do. The coco based soil mix has been cooking since last Dec 2nd. I generally throw in a little rice....calcium source & microbe food. This time I used brown rice, which sprouted & resulted in the worst case of gnats I've ever had while preparing soil. Won't be using brown rice again. Trying to kill off as many as I can before transplant & putting them into the tent.

I use 2 gal. for ease of handling (shoulder limitations) & to fit 6 plants directly under the 8 sq. ft. footprint of my light. I like to grow 2 plants of strains I actually selected to see different phenotypes & how the strain generally grows. But sometimes I only have space for one of strains I select. Try to add a freebie strain sometimes to check it out.

I do not reuse my soil indoors. I try to grow roots that completely fill the container whether 2 gal indoors or 7's outdoors. I've seen that if I can grow pot filling roots, my plants & dried herb will be what I hope for. Old indoor soil is either dumped or used for outdoor non 420 plants. Actually there is nearly nothing left as the plant will have used it up. My 6 plant indoor crops require only one bag of coco before adding all the other stuff I use. With only 2 indoor grows under my belt, I'm still learning. Yields are ample for my needs....getting ~0.5 lb. in each of 1st two runs. My commercial, mostly HPS friends were always skeptical (due to perceived low yield) about my wanting to go LED route, but they're changing their minds telling me my gram to watt ratio is surprisingly good. So that has been rather good news. 420 forum has always been LED friendly, which is one reason I joined here. Well enough wordy rambling. Any thoughts or comments always welcome.

Here is a picture of 2 gal. roots that I was talking about. I was almost giddy the 1st time I saw these indoor roots!

Great news.

Hi Brightlight!

I can really relate. I've had 4 surgeries on my back and only the last one ever made me better (4 years wasted on pain killers). You're in my thoughts and prayers.:Namaste:

I really love your root picture. I've never experienced anything like that. I'm very impressed. Congrats on your 69th birthday too. You're way older than me LOL! I'd love to be able to grow for someone like you. I think I can take on one more patient. All that's left is the move to Washington. :thumb:

Thank you Doc for your kind words. The dense roots are the result of building heavy microbes in the soil. After mixing the coco mix & cooking it, I continue adding microbes throughout the grow....regularly & ongoing. Simple & easy to do. Seeing your MSH, I'd gladly be one of your patients.

Do you plan to go to March Max Yield Show in Seattle? Guessing you're up that way. I go whenever it comes to my area....great samples & chance to talk to mfrs. I haven't forgotten....owe you smoke report on the EmDog. Soon bro.

:bump:
:bravo:

Airpot? Smartpot? Or just a Pot pot?

Hi Mr. T. I use fabric pots. Smartpots are not "hemmed" on top so can be floppy. I prefer Geopots outdoors. Hemmed on top & overall great quality. Even have "fat" version....shallower but wider. Just how our plants love it. Indoors I'm using Root Pouch (gray, which is mid grade). I found my 2 gal. at great price...under $1 each. At that price I've been using new ones every run. Kept "used" ones for outdoor starters.

Busted up Rotator is painful, ewwww bone on bone. :whoa: That can't be fun.

Warm and positive thoughts and vibes coming your way, wishing for a successful surgery and safe return. You totally teased me with the new strains haha, and that Chem is outstanding - but looking forward to catching up when your back and in better health.
Good to see you have your meds all lined up :)

Thanks for good wishes CS. Hahaha....glad the new strains are of interest to you. Funny that several have food or food sounding names.

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Recently inspired by Dr. Ziggy's creations, I bought a Magic Butter Maker. I have lots of trim & have mostly given it away. I like edibles now & then, but have stopped using all commercial edibles because of the unpredictable & generally undesirable meds used in them. When I ate edibles made from my own herb made by patients who shared, it was always better. So I decided to try my own hand at it.

The MBM was simple & effective to use. I used ~30 grams of combined outdoor & indoor trim with one pound of butter. I decarboxilated herb in oven at 235º for nearly an hour. Then onto the MGB. The end product looked like engine sludge. When the butter hardened, it was a nice mid green. Cleaning the unit & filter bag was a bit of work.

I have heavy munchy sweet tooth & love cookies or any pastries actually. I baked cookies with my 2 kids when they were younger, but seldom since. So I tried baking Chocolate Chip edibles with my 1st batch of MGM butter. Used dark chocolate chips & added walnuts too. Here is result.

I tried a small one to start. An easy mellow effect well underway from around 45 min. Then I ate another small one. At 2 hr. mark, plenty medicated but not too much (like some edibles can be). Two of these were a perfect edible high & kept me going just fine for ~3 hours. Smooth & relaxing but definitely well medicated. Another good result was the nearly imperceptible cannabis taste. I'm planning to bake another batch to use during my shoulder recovery. Lots of fun.:Namaste:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Hey BL! Hope the seedlings are doing well.

Medibles!! Glad your batch came out so well, wow...they look gooey and tasty.:circle-of-love:

I've only tried eating cannabis comparatively recently, as there is a learning curve, and I'm abhorrent to commit fresh bud to it....but I think that with the MBM, I'm more likely to keep trying to canna-cook, instead of giving up. :cheer:
Have you tried 3 at once? Just wondering :laughtwo:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

So did everything go well with the surgery?

THAI STICKS
New pictures of old photos from ~1974 or 1975. These were never plentiful but a great treat! Sometimes there were a few seeds, which were always kept & treasured. A great smoke & fantastic high. I loved Thai then & still do!

LOST COAST OG & LA AFFIE
I'm FINALLY finished trimming my summer herb! Emerald Triangle Lost Coast OG (top) & Cali Connection LA Affie (bottom of top photo). Lost Coast close up in the 2nd pic. The Lost Coast was my grower's choice overall best plant. Everyone who tried it loved it. One of the top OG's I've grown, & I've been pretty OG heavy for awhile. Even though listed at 60/40 I/S, it is alert, social, uplifting, functional yet very very stoney. Imo this is truly a top tier strain & would heartily recommend it.

CHEESEDOG
I grew 2 regular seeds of Connoisseur Genetics CheeseDog expecting to get one female. Got lucky & both were females. The best one was planted in my 2nd best in the ground hole. This Exodus Cheese x OG was a phenotype that really took on the sativa side of the Cheese (Skunk #1). Leaves were very thin, very light green for the genetics. The sativa was also very pronounced in the high even with the OG genetics. Don't know anything about Connoisseur's OG's but it supplied a good kick to the overall high. A good one. The heaviest yielder of the summer garden. The other plant was good but not noteworthy.

Hello NCW. My memory is probably worse than most. I don't recall a perfume taste but can faintly remember the exotic sandalwood, musky smell that was very nice. A good friend at the time was a merchant marine, & he'd bring back Thai sticks that he said were called "Gung Chow". These little joy sticks ended up with the "nod" as you mentioned. He said they were laced with residual water that was used in the making of opium. Real good & fun.

:ciao: Bright. Nice to see you at my place. How's that shoulder?
:circle-of-love:

Thanks Mr. T. Next Tues. is the surgery day. All 3 of your plants look delicious. Nice job. Yesterday I mentioned the BSHW sativa side of SAGE, the indica side is often said to be your Mazur i-Sharif. Which of the 3 do you like most?

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Hi Brightlight,

Hope you're doing well my friend! I love the MBM, it's a great way to make butter and oil. I bought some Lost coast OG based on your rec but bought HSO dang-it. I forgot you grew the emerald triangle version. Hopefully it will be great.

Hope you're doing well my friend!

Hey CareStaker. The seedlings were about a wk.+ behind due to minor start up problems. I'd been on a lucky, long run with germination, & knew the hot streak would end. One Strawberry Banana didn't sprout at all, & I planted a Dedoverde Haze when the radicle was only 1/8" long. Usually I like to wait longer so it can properly "dig" in & root. The radicle spiraled trying to root. It made it, but the seedling eventually failed...maybe too much energy expended. I also had to wait longer to transplant into coco mix due to WWIII in the garage against the gnats. I probably over dampened the mix not accounting for colder winter temps. Still battling the gnats after all were transplanted, but hope I'm finally winning the war. Had to get out the shop vac to use like anti-aircraft gun & have been sucking up gnats daily. Actually quite fun. Have also used more BT than I've ever used before. Will try to get a pic up at least once during veg.

Your suggestion to eat 3 edibles at once has stuck in my brain. Will be trying it after I get home from hospital later this wk. Heavy medication will help. :lot-o-toke:

Hey dr. Glad to have you visit as I know you've been busy with your new job. I've seen the HSO LC OG on its website but don't know anything about it or if it's even the same genetics. Should be good. Will be looking forward to you growing it. I will post some smoke report info when I can type again.

But here is brief EmDog info for you since you had interest in it. The EmDog seems to shade more towards the "Crippy" indica side. Even with 40% sativa, it is more like a good indica. No uplift, euphoric Chem effect. The perfume, floral scent carried right through the cure. The best smelling strain of the 4 in that grow. After a bud is broken up, the familiar Chem scent shows up. Very lung expansion hits. A good smoke, but I miss the Chem effect. Strong, relaxing, indica that should please indica fans. Additional bowls raise the ceiling...until the nod sets in. The story & hype were better than the result I got this time. A good plant but not what I thought or prefer. But I have 2 more seeds so will try it again in the future. I will post a harvest day pic & a bud pic later. Since we're "strain bros.", I will tell you that Cali Chem 91 is one of finest strains I've grown. WOW, & everyone says the same thing. Definitely more on it later.

It may be awhile before I can post again as typing with one hand is tough as I found out in the past. But I'll have lots of time to read other journals. Thanks to everyone for their good wishes.:Namaste:

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Chem '91 should have some Thai in it or it's the same as the famous unknown cut that was grown from a seed that Dog got on a Grateful Dead gig? :) I have these two crosses as you know and they both have been bred through it, so I'm really expecting a good smoke.

Happy recovery!

re: Brightlight's Strain Fest - Organics & LED

Thank you so much brightlight. That was an awesome smoke report. I've got cali chem 91 on my short list. I've got a pack of their pre 98 bubba kush I've been thinking about lately. I really like the Indica for night time. Sativas are the best for me during the day. Get well soon brother. Sprinkle some of that goodness that makes your roots grow like bushes on your shoulder. Heal that sucker right up.

Maybe not, but a little laughter might help a tiny bit.:high-five:
