Bluter's Happy Home For Hilarious Hempsters

nodes are just the paired branching that grows out from the stem of a cannabis plant.

cannabis reaches sexual maturity by the fifth node, or once the fifth set of branches develop. that is the point which you can decide to flower if it is a photo, or will flower on it's own, if an auto.

note : clones are different as they are taken from a branch, clones have alternating nodes. autos can also trigger early for a number of reasons before the fifth node. they will trigger after it for sure though.

edit : i used cheap tomato cages, there are better ones for cannabis. there are even better tomato cages than mine lol
So how many nodes would this auto have?
I’m thinking it’s on its 2nd?

5, working on 6.

The nodes are where the branch pairs come out, not counting the initial seed leaves which in your picture are either buried or have come off.
They fell off when I tried to tie the pipe cleaner on it think I did it to tight almost choked it so I would just pinch off the top off and then it’ll be topped?

Also letting off nice kush smells

fifth.

the branches will need to develop a bit.

On a plant grown from seed, the initial pairs of nodes will be opposite and then with that 5th node will begin to alternate The alternating nodes, which spiral around the branch, tell you it's sexually mature.

i've grown miles past the fifth node and always had paired nodes off the stem only unless there was another genetic issue.

i've had a couple triclops. one in this thread i pealed apart like a cheese string.

The spiraling nature can be used to your benefit for training since they come out at different spots pointed in different directions.

i always top and train before or by the fifth node. doesn't mean you can't do it higher, especially if you need to super crop.

Yes. Then each of those two branches will grow out with side branches coming off of them. The first pair might still be opposite, but should change to alternate from there on.

I've read that topping at the third or fourth or fifth node each produces different structures down the road. Any truth to that?

It seems to be a sexual maturity issue rather than a set number of nodes. Plants don't seem to flower when the nodes are still opposite.

i normally let them grow a bit and then cut them back. i'm cruel lol.
if you're in a small space you might want to look in to quadding a couple plants too.

i tie stuff up all the time :cheesygrinsmiley:

You definitely get a better stub that way that can help down the road to provide a stronger joint against splitting.

it doesn't have to hit the fifth if it's a photo. quadding and other high stress methods all call for a cut before the fifth. i can flower anything after 3 wks veg. doesn't matter if it's auto or photo. just hit with the right heavy light, nutes, and schedule.

part of it. it's just dumb easy and i'm not too technical.

Hopefully!

No, that's exactly right. Now the growth hormones will shift to the lower leaves and they will start competing for dominance. As Bluter says you can start training them with various methods including Quadlining.

I like to let them grow just a touch more so it is cleaner taking off that top node, but that's the general idea.

Even with opposite nodes, or have they gone alternate by then? You grow some pretty fast plants in your Hempy buckets. In soil the nodes get put on at a much slower pace.

the upshoot branches alternate once you cap the dominant top.

But if you don't top, are you saying that your plants flower even with opposite nodes??

if by opposite you mean paired - then yes for sure. i've had 7 ft indoor plants.

always so long as you don't top it.
