Bill C-45: Canada's Legalization, The Drama Revs Up

Just for the halibut, I called my insurance company to find out if outdoor cannabis plant theft was covered. Potted plants are covered by insurance, but the agent had to get clarification for cannabis. He wanted to know the value of the plants. I told him that in my opinion $50 would cover the plant, medium, and pot until the flowering phase was reached. At harvest, I suggested that the plants value would be about $2000, and that a graduated scale be used based on time they were in flower. That means a plant 5 weeks into flower would be worth about $1000.

Aviva, has not come out with a policy yet. Their risk assessment team have no idea of the risk involved and have bumped it up to the head office. I should hear back tomorrow from them.

Last year and this year the plants were in pots. With all the contractors milling about we have been keeping a low profile. Of course having them in pots is handy for people to steal.

Right now our kitchen has 9 three footers in it because workers are coming to install the windows in our shed.
While I don't like the rules saying cannabis has to be out of sight of the road, it helps us keep a low profile.

We have a neighbour who likes cannabis but I will never tell him we are growing. Loose lips...

Peace. :peace:

I had too many clones for my grow tent, so I put them out on the porch for a few days until I could get another grow tent set up. For the outdoors, I've designed something to keep the rain out. Plants are grown in coco coir, so I'll have inverted funnels coming out of a wooden frame for the plant stems. This should also prevent theft until harvest time. I'll also have them away from the house so they'll be less noticeable. That should cut the window of opportunity for theft to just a few weeks.

I heard back from RBC/Aviva just now. I've dealt with them for over thirty years, and they cancelled my home insurance. They went on to say that they were now questioning every new client as to whether or not they were growing on their property. They will refuse to insure anyone growing, or living in a building where someone else is growing marijuana. If they discover that someone in your building was growing marijuana in the building, or on the property it is located on, they will cancel the insurance and deny any claims for any incident, related to the grow or not.

Imagine if the insurance companies got a hold of the list of ACMPR permitted grow locations...

Edit: After Oct 17 you could technically report people you don't like and know are growing and cause huge issues also.

What makes this even worse is that all insurance companies ask whether you have been denied insurance, or had it cancelled. If you answer yes, most will not insure you. I just looked at Kanatix on-line, and none of the fifty companies they represent will insure me.

What about the recreational growers? They will be hit with the same stick.

That's very unfair... yeah I'm not a fan of insurance company's... so hows that gonna work after oct17
I don't know. It's too late to beat feet today, but I'll start looking tomorrow. I'll need to answer the questions honestly, but not volunteer anything related to cannabis.

I guess that's gonna make it hard to sell renters insurance in most apartment buildings, there's probably at least someone growing in the building.

I guess they would have no qualms selling the insurance, and then denying any claims... In the long run, either everyone will cancel their policies (since the risk is very high someone is growing) or the insurance companies will change their policy...

BTW, I'm NOT going to call my insurance company to ask their policy :)

I may have a way around that pesky problem. I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know if it works.

What is their issues?

My biggest would be electric is done properly and then you have to bring all the new wannabe growers in to the mix....

Currently I'm checking with insurance brokers, as they work for you, not the insurance companies. I've checked with six of them. Four had no one in their stable that would cover this. Two are looking into it further.

I've called the local radio station's rant line with a PSA, and the newspaper without giving my name, informing the public about the current state of our unprepared insurance industry. Hopefully this will help put pressure on the industry to offer appropriate coverage.

They are treating it as a drug, including producing, and distribution.

Power, ventilation, and public liability (odor?) are the main concerns as far as I can determine..

The RCMP in Nova Scotia are getting in some practice for next year.

I had five plants stolen from my back porch last night. They were all high CBD/ low THC strains, Nightingale and V.C.D.C., growing in coco coir. I really hope the thieves can, and do grow them out. I'd love to see their faces when they first smoke it. :D:laugh::rofl:

I predict a lot of this next fall. I wonder if insurance companies will pay for these types of theft. I wonder if they've even considered it.
My question I asked awhile back that no one seemed to have a reply for . Catch those punks and put them in the pen .

I agree I think insurance should have to cover it home insurance though or tenants insurance?

Insurance companies don't HAVE to provide coverage. They can refuse for many reasons. They classify marijuana as a drug, and use that as their reason for refusal.
