Becca Buries a Bean

19 days in, flowers are forming up nicely. Added about 3L of nutrient solution. The mix discussed yesterday measured pH 6.3 and ec was 2.01mS. Res shows 2-7/8" now. Did some more lollipopping and used a twist tie to pull the two major branches together for mutual support.

I got my order from @Freedom of Seeds a couple weeks ago, and I'm really looking forward to growing some out so I'm going to pop a seed today (the moon is well positioned, lol). I bought 5 each of 2 varieties of their triploids, Tahoe and Donutz, and FOS threw in 10 free Purple Punch Fems (non-polyploid). These are reputed to be true polyploids, not to be confused with whorled phyllotaxy, which is what caught my attention.

The Tahoe has the shorter flowering period so I'm going to run one of those first. Here's the dope, so to speak, on the two I selected. Had to go to Leafly to get info on Purple Punch.

This was actually the second shipment of seeds as the first apparently didn't make it through Customs or something. That's really a shame because the 10 freebies in that shipment were Chemdawg, and I was looking forward to adding the genetics to my collection. Sigh...

Here's the seed I've selected to start today in a Root Riot rooting cube and then a gallon pot of Roots Organics Original. I'll be using the water soak/wet paper towel germination technique:

Wow, the fat Tahoe Triploid seed I selected has cracked open, so I carefully moved it to a rooting cube and covered it with a slip of plastic to keep the cube moist. The saturated rooting cube weighs in at 19.6g. Time to mix some 1/4 strength nutrient solution.
:morenutes:

Day 20 flowering. Ms. Fruit is very healthy and was praying to the light when I opened the tent. Res is 2-1/8" full.
Going to mix another gallon of solution same as last batch so I can top up the res. I'll take 500mL and dilute some to 1/4 strength and some to 1/2 strength for the Tahoe seedling.

The little Tahoe seedling's tap root is doing a curly-Q thing. I hope it figures out which way is down soon, as it would be very risky having to take action to resolve it. Anyway, it's alive and healthy so I'll leave it be for now and let nature take it's course.

OMG, the root is not curly-Qing. This seedling has TWO tap roots! I've never seen this before. I wonder what other surprises await with this polyploid?

The Tahoe seed hasn't sorted itself out. Rather than attempt the impossible I opted to sprinkle some potting soil over the seedling, mist it and leave it to Mother Nature. I can always pop another seed if this one doesn't pan out.

Meanwhile, the Forbidden Fruit, 22 days into flowering, is looking great, though I def should have let it veg longer. Added another 1.5L of nutrient solution* to the res, which is now 4-1/8" deep. Poured 1.0L into a 2L jug and filled the jug with tap water to make 2L of 1/2 strength nutrient solution. Next I poured 50mL of the 1/2 strength into a 100mL graduated cylinder and added 50mL tap water to make 100mL of 1/4 strength nute sol for the Tahoe seedling to feed on.

Looks pretty bushy from the top view.

Not quite bushy yet...

Hey Becca 👋
Been a while since I stopped by!
That forbidden fruit is breathtaking 😍
She's stretched so damn much while I've been away!!
Great job gurl 👏 👌

Hi Tassie,

Thanks for dropping by! She's still going to stretch a bit more, but I could have waited longer on the flip- would have more flower nodes. My height limitations force me to make less than optimal choices with my plants. She is looking good though and has been very nice to me, lol! :morenutes:

My multiple tap/curly-Q root Tahoe has yet to make it to the surface of the soil and I am getting impatient.

I've never seen multiple tap roots before, but I have seen curly-Q tap roots and the plants were always a little stunted and matured later with less yield, so I'm thinking crack another seed. This time let the tap get a little longer so I can plant it pointing down.

I wanted to have a fully vegged plant ready to replace the Forbidden Fruit when it's ripe in mid December but we'll see. Speaking of which, the FF just keeps getting prettier every day. Res is at 2" today. Dumped in the remaining 1.2L of nutrient solution and res is now 3-1/4" deep. She's getting thirsty!

I've got some growth of the Tahoe Triploid seed... more weird growth! I awoke this morning to find this loop of main stem has appeared above soil.

TahoeTri20241107_123319.jpg

I lifted the rooting cube in it's clear plastic cup from the seedling pot, and observed a root had grown through the rooting cube. After liberal sprinkles of Mycorrhizae in the pre-formed hole, I planted the rooting cube.

Where it gets really weird is that what I thought was a second tap root, was actually a complete second seedling that was incredibly tiny and kind of stuck to the loop stem! Twins!?! Freaky!

I had to use a magnifier to comprehend what I was looking at, but once I did, I carefully moved it to the soil at the side and covered it. I doubt it will survive but it would be cool if it did so I have some proof!

Now just a few hours later and the Tahoe sprout has showed it's dicotyledons, which are rotating up to the light. Photos from 2 different positions for perspective.

The Forbidden Fruit is starting to develop a nice bouquet and her buds are getting frosty. Res is at 3-1/4" after adding 500mL of tap water.

As soon as that Tahoe gets a little more root/stregth, I’d bury most of that stem almost to the cotyledons.

That's the plan. Once it's buried up to it's neck and in a SIP, it will become a non-issue.

By mounding soil up under the stem of the little Tahoe seedling, I've been able to straighten it slowly, a little bit at a time, and it's seeking the light on it's own. It looks healthy and it's first true leaves are forming. Pics from 2 angles for perspective.

The Forbidden Fruit is growing like a weed, still maybe as much as 6 weeks to go. Res is at 2-3/4" today.

Forbidden Fruit 26 days into flowering.

Hey Becca, great job on persevering with the Tahoe, looks like she'll make a full comeback now! You've got this 💯
The Forbidden Fruit looks absolutely dynamite, awesome job!
Can't wait to see her come harvest time 😁

Thanks, @TassieTurtleman . Today I used a twist tie to provide support in just the right direction to get her up to near vertical. As soon as I transplant and bury her deep enough to cover the long stem, roots will be sprouting from it. :ganjamon:

Ooooo yessss!!! I love it, absolutely smashing job 👏
She looks so much happier now, I have no doubt she'll make a full comeback 😉

I'm just glad I was able to get her corrected without damage. You don't get a second chance at this stage. Just a slight "S" curve now and that will get buried. Good enough!

TahoeTriploid20241109_181341r.jpg

The Forbidden Fruit used a liter of water since yesterday. Res was at 2-1/4" and is now 3-1/4" after adding a liter of tap aqua.

That forbidden fruit is gonna be one amazing producer I reckon 😉
