Bassman's 6th - RDWC - Hi-Defoliation Martian & Master Kush

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

How do you germ bass? Oh and FYI got all your pms just mulling things over and gonna start getting equipment. Probably going to have to finish up the current room and then get veg tent then start setting up one side at a time.

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Peeked in this morning about 90 mins after lights on. The Martian Kush have shut down stretch just as planned with the early defoliation. They have also fully recovered from the hard stripping and are re-leafing in abundance!...

Hey Bassman, I've been on the fence about heavy defoliating, leaning more towards not. I've read the arguments on both sides and seen good results from both the leave it alone and the defoliate camps. But if it can stop a plant from stretching, well then I may just have to employ this technique if my Haze #13 starts getting out of control.

Thanks for the good info. :thumb:

Have you seen bassmans defoliation thread linked in his signature? If not check it out there's a wealth of great information in there about both sides of the fence.

Thanks for the lead DocDee. I'll check it out ASAP.

Basically, 24-26 hr soak in water to crack, then paper towel method to 1/4-1/2 inch taproot, then into root riot cubes.

90% of the nonbelievers have never tried employing the method. The other 10% likely did it wrong or had some other issues in their grow and blamed poor results on defoliation.

I just use paper towel method and make sure it's moist at all times. Usually see tap roots in 2 or 3 days max. Does the presoak usually speed up the process for you? The root riot cubes are they just as easy as rockwoll when it comes to transplanting? Never used them

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Hey Bass,

Can you describe your bending technique. I think I've lost my touch in the last 15 years! That, or my plants are just too damn tough. I've been bending some of my branches like you do. In the past, I would pinch the stem a little to collapse the center, then I could make a nice sharp bend in the stem. It's working except the bends are not holding. I'll go look at the branch an hour later, and it's already recovered almost 100%. I'll go look at them the next day, and it's as if I didn't bend any of them. I can find the spot I made the bend, and it's still weaker than the other parts of the stem, but it still doesn't stay down. I was tieing all the plants down, but it's gotten to be too much. 23 plants with a dozen branches each. You do the math! I've taken to just bending as they have gotten bigger.

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Hiker, I twist till I feel/hear a crack (not a crack through the skin, but a pop of the stem so to speak), and bend. Basically about a 90 degree twist and bend to location. Sometimes they will hang further than desired. In that case, I just tie em up with some string where I want for a cpl days. Three-four days later and they support themselves. But once heavy with bud, you better have some string on them (or under in my case).

My twist/bend basically is all in one move.

I'll never use rock wool again.

Huh... I know what you're talking about with the pop or crack sound. I understand what's happening inside the stem. I thought I was getting a good bend, but they come right back up. I'll do some more later tonight and see if I can get better results.

I'm already planning to have to use some bamboo stakes to hold up these plants. I think a single cola plant is about the only one you can get away with not doing that to. hehe

Thanks

Update

Day 14 in flower, day 20 in 12/12

Interesting things today. The girls are drinking a ton of nutrient. Nutrient held steady for about a week. Barely moving down. Now they are eating like gangbusters!

How I check how much they eat:

Daily, when I get home from work, usually a few hours after lights on, I go in and check PH. I dont check ppm at this time. Instead, I top off with 0 ppm RO water and give it some time to mix up with the nutrient solution. Obviously this thins the mix, but I am topping off to the desired water level.

After maybe 30 mins to an hour from topping off (which can be 2-3.5 gals) I pull some water to test ppm and ph again. The plants tell me what they are doing this way.

So today after adding top off, I mixed up what would equal a 1 gal mix of nutrient and added that back into the res. Some 7 or so hours later, I check on the girls again, and the nutrient level has dropped! So I added ANOTHER gallon of mix. Yesterday the girls were topped off at around 980 ppm. This morning after adding 0 ppm water to level, they were at 940 ppm. Eating 40 ppm in 24 hrs is a lot! This afternoon, The mix was at 950 ppm when I had added 1 gal of mix this morning! Now, 1 hr before lights off it's at 990 ppm, or basically 2.0 e.c on .500 meter.

Also, the defoliated Martian's are in great re-leafing mode. No more stretch, and filling the tent back in. The Master Kush are bushy as all get out and still stretching. One is even with the Martian's, while shorty is still behind but definitely the most beautiful imo.

I am only 3-4 inches beyond optimal height on the tall girls, at 32" tall. Shutting down the Martian's when I did with defoliation turned out to be perfect timing. I'll get to shorten them a little more come Sunday or so when I defoliate the Masters and super crop the Martians a little bit more and rotate them in the tent a bit.

Width wise, it looks like every plant is in the optimal goal 28" wide. So while we have one girl that really needs to catch up on the stretching, they are all otherwise near perfect in size. This is a good victory.

Check out the pics. First out is what the Martians looked like AFTER defoliation just a few days ago, and then a wide view today of the tent.

I don't know if its possible for your situation but I'm jus at the bar thinking about this and maybe you should do the bend lower on the stem and the weight of the top will help weigh it down more.

I've bent like this forever just recently found out it was called "super cropping" but ive never had a bend sit straight back up like you are saying.

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Hey big bass. I was thinking about your uneven plant height and came up with a idea that you may have already considered. If my memory is not completely shot, you are using 5gal buckets correct? Well if after you do all the defoiling and super cropping you want ,you take the top rings of other buckets and stack um up to even out the tops and get more even light distribution. By the top rings of buckets I am referring to the support ridges around the top which the handle connects. Just cut off the top 5" or so and you have some spacers to adjust plant height.

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Not a bad idea northerner. But it would lift that amount of root out of the water in that bucket. I'll have to think about it.

I'm not flowering yet, so no bud weight to weight them down. I bend fairly low. Mostly I bend at the spot that I think will benefit the plant most, ie bring the meristem below the most nodes. It works great if I tie them down with wire, but I can't keep up this method with 23 plants.

hehehe I used to bend too without knowing the proper name for it. Apparently I used to SCROG as well without knowing there was a name for it.

Ah I see I usually don't bend til they are in flower. Maybe that's why mine don't bend back up.

Re: Bassman's 6th, BPN, RDWC, Hi-Defoliation, Hi-Yield Martian & Master Kush grow.

Hi Bassman. I'm entirely new to posting here, but have been a a learning lurker for over a year. You and Steveham (I think that's how you spell his name) have been my main sources of knowledge, along with little bits of knowledge from all the other veterans. I am a fan of this high defoliation, and as you have said Bass, everyone needs to figure out what responds well with their specific strain with this technique. As of now here is my setup:

What strain is it? Lucy

Is it Indica, Sativa or Hybrid? What percentages? Indica (Mazar x Skunk #1)

Is it in Veg or Flower stage? Flower (as you can all see)

If in Flower stage... For how long? 60 days since 12/12

Indoor or outdoor? Indoor

Soil or Hydro? Soil

If soil... what is in your mix? Espoma with perlite, vermiculite, and garden lime added.

If soil... What size pot? 5 gallon bags

Size of light? 600w HPS , and a 300w Advanced LED Diamond Series

Is it aircooled? Yes, the HPS is.

Temp of Room/cab? 78 - 82 fahrenheit

RH of Room/cab? 40%-50%

How often are you watering? Every 3 days. Every other watering using nutes.

Type and strength of ferts used? Fox Farms Big Bloom, Grow Big, and Tiger Bloom

And here are the girls:
