Autos v. Photos - A 5x5 No Rules Fight for Yield: A Jon & NickHardy Gig

im hoping i can get 1.5 lbs with bit of luck maybe more

Its a 3x3 or 4x4? My 4x4 I’m aiming 1kg that’s a bit over 2lbs? I’m just using 16oz solo pots for that though 🤷🏽

its a 5 x 5 ft.. 1 kg = 2.2 pounds !

im grow 4 plants in four 7 gallon air pots fabric..

To my eyes you’re pretty much already there! I am just switching for this contest to using 10s for autos. I want to see if I can fill one with roots.

I get the final pieces of nutes and infrastructure today @NickHardy. I’m ready to drop when you are on the 5th. I have my water/coco pots prepped, I have the two organic pots prepped, and I’m prepping the tens today. I’m also making the support structure for the sidelights today.

how many watts total how much on the side what kind of lighting ?

you can grow much higher plants with lots of side lighting .. vertical positioning ?

Hey @DeltaDubie - My main light is huge. It almost goes side to side. It leaves just enough room on either side for a pair of @ViparSpectra XS1500 Pros. They are currently powering the Skywalker. I will put them up about 6-10” under the main light on either side facing down on a 45 degree angle. I have yet to decide when I’ll start using them. If I begin in veg, they get so goddamn leafy it’s a PITA. But in flower they add tons of bulk and density. So I’ll likely split the difference. In terms of wattage, they go up to 150. Last time I never got above 50%. It doesn’t take too much and has to be balanced in terms of ppfd with the main light. Does that answer your question?

Total wattage in veg = 550 from the main plus whatever from the sides. In flower = 680 from the main plus whatever from the sides. Gives me potentially 980 watts for flower.

this is better answer thanks..

whats the sq footage of the area? how high can you grow?

My tent is 5x5x9. My light can get to within 8” of the top, and the plants can get as close as 8”, maybe 6”, to the light. If you subtract a foot for the pot, it leaves approximately 7’ of active grow space. I should be able to do whatever I want.

I’ve also done all this before in the same tent, albeit in different combinations. I have a pretty good idea of what my potential max yield is. And I still believe I can outyield his tent of photos. His tent is 5x5x6.5. Big difference. Enough, I hope, to make the difference.

If I can average just a tiny bit over 9 ounces a plant, I can pull 4 lbs. From 7 autos that would be spectacular and next to impossible. It’s easy enough to grow one or two like that, but it’s a pretty high number to have to average across 7 plants in the same grow and tent. I’d have to get to just under 12 ounces a plant to make 5 lbs. - that’s a big stretch. But 4 I believe can be done if everything goes right. Can Nick pull 4 lbs from a 5x5x6.5? Probably. He’ll likely dust me as everyone thinks.

I fixed it @InTheShed - yes, my math was off - yes, it’s 10+ average - yes, even more impossible.

That’s how I cover my ass. Lmao!!!
OMG, it IS 9+. 64 ounces = 4 lbs. 9x7.x = 64. Not 10+. I am a stoned, mathematically challenged idiot right now. Oy.

The per plant calculations - hahaha welcome to my world! Like the Solos under HPS - “I only need 2oz per plant to hit 1kg”

Seems very doable. Seeming your way to it is way harder than actually harder than doing it!

In my latest 4x4 grow I compared it to something Ayrton Senna the Formula One driver said about driving the perfect lap comparing it to tying your shoelaces - actually I found the actual quote, its neck ties.

I wondered about the perfect lap? He pondered the proposition. 'It is like tying both ends of your tie so that they are exactly the same length. Experience tells you that you can do it, practice tells you that you can do it - but you can't

To anyone reading that thinking but I can do it! I think what he meant was it needs to be more and more perfect each time, the values, the granularity you use to measure how close to being "the same length" gets finer. And you'll always see how you could do it better the next time. Marginal gains kinda thing.

Switch to grams per plant over ounces, I guess!

Lol. Same difference. And yes - I have to nail all 7 to have a chance. But I believe I am capable of doing so.
