Maybe this could help you a bit, I'm by no means an expert grower so i hesitate to diagnose your problem, but it may help you self diagnose the issue.

Question is, how close are your lights. The red stem could indicate an issue within itself. The discoloration on the ends look like light burn, but your problem may lie within the red stem. Green crack isn't known to have a red stem. So probably start there. Check ph before anything.

I found some 5 gallon buckets to use, but they appear to have contained pesticide. Now on one hand, it seems to be a pretty non-toxic pesticide and is even listed as organic by some certification institutes ( Pennsylvania Certified Organic, but not OMRI ). Still there's another formulation from the same company listed in the OMRI.

Does anyone have any experience or know if they might impart any kind of taste into my weed? The pesticide was some kind of 90% mineral oil spray they use on hops around here.

Well... there are thousands of of tidy cat litter buckets with cannabis plants in them. Thy have an interesting lid that also makes them a great candidate for DIY dwc buckets. A free heavy duty 5 gallon bucket with the purchase of cat litter. Most cannabis lovers are also animal lovers I have found. Brand name multi-cat indoor scoopable litter formulas have a lot of perfumes and chemicals in them surely.... more so than an organic insecticide I would say.

I would definitely fill them with a 5 gallons tap water/ 1-2 cups bleach solution and let them sit for 24-48 hours. Just like any other 'used' plastic you introduce to your garden. I do the same if I get used plastic nursery pots even. Rinse well with hot hot water after the soak and let them dry out nicely and they will work surely.

I would think the tidy cats litter has way more potent odors. Also, they are yellow and not THAT heavy duty so you have to spray paint them or tape them up with black tape because the yellow plastic lets light hit the roots.

Are the buckets you found black, green, or opaque enough not to let light through? That's the biggest importance with used buckets.

They're white, but pretty thick plastic. I used them to grow on my very first go around, but it's hard to judge the taste on that foray because I didn't really let the buds mature or cure them right, so not really a good way to judge. But I think that's a pretty good point about the kitty litter buckets, never thought of that. I'm probably just overthinking it.

I'm kind of disappointed though, I went through the hassle of cleaning them, and finally stuck a 3 gallon ( what I usually finish in ) in one of them and it's not even that much bigger. I mean I guess technically it's exactly 2 gallons bigger, but still... Only about 3-4 more inches of space on the bottom, same diameter. So I'm not even sure I'm going to use these, might go with some 7 gallons instead.

Money it's an issue for me, so i can't just upgrade like this. But thank you for the opinion, i will probably keep them like you said, i don't want to risk stunning them :)
I have a mars 1200, my buddy has a 600w hps and im getting alot better results than him with same soil, same strain, same nutes and all and i don't have to deal with all the heat in my tent. He done ordered him a 1200 mars after he seen how well mine performed. If you could save enough back to get a 700 or a 900 mars would do relly good, and it would pay for itself your first run with it, that's just my opinion, i am glad i bought my mars.✌

I have seen great results with defoliation, i will be doing some also when time is right.✌

Do you have a veg tent and a flower tent or are you just running one tent?

I personally would always run both switched just for the broader spectrum BUT I am a firm believer in whatever wattage you use for veg should be doubled for flower

With that being said if I only had one tent I would prob run my veg switch during veg and hit both when I switched to 12/12 just so the the plant has the extra energy that it needs for the stretch and bud development

Im sure someone will be able to add some more info/expertise

Hey guys I appreciate all the help thus far, I have another question as it relates to room prep for flowering. I've hard in various threads that using a dehumidifier can be helpful and stresses the plant "the right way". Was wondering if anyone could advise?

Agreed with the full spectrum. The only time I run veg only is with seedlings for the first week or so, then boom! Full spectrum.

i have one tent and my seeds are autos and im using light 20/4 at the moment and i ll think i m gonna stick with that light schedule for the whole circle of my plants life. they are autos, i dont think 12/12 will be good for them right?

Since the MMJ was Cross with a hemp plant basically, the Plant will "Auto"-matically go into flower when it has gotten the right amount of hours of light. MMJ go by hours of light, not days. So keeping it at 20/4.sounds good me. But I've never used autos. Good luck

If that's the case then if you ran both switches during veg shouldnt you still try to increase the lumens during flower? Or is it ok to use the same amount of power for both?
First grow I only had the Mars II 400, so no choice, no switches on that baby. But went through veg and flower ok for what it was. Added a Reflector 144 during the last couple or so weeks of flower, it made a big difference, but only 2 weeks worth lol.
Right now Reflector is in it's own veg tent, and flower tent has the 400 and a Mars Pro II 160. Both tents 2x4.
Ideally, more power for flower, but it can be done with reasonable yields with same power for full grow.
As it stands now, it looks like I will be flipping veg tent in a couple days, with only the 144, but when I harvest flower tent, will move the ladies there and start all over again :)
