Ase's Perpetual Fun With Coco

I'm not 100% sure on how the contests work. Since I won in May for POTM I thought I was excluded for all contests for 3 months. However maybe it is just the POTM contest. I've never really submitted anything else in the other ones. I think I am going to chop it tonight. It is almost 90% milky with just a few specs of amber but I need the space and it's been flushed for exactly a week now.

Truthfully this is the part of my grow that I knew would slow down. It's easy to do every other day posts when plants are in veg or in stretch but budding and fattening is harder to tell if anything has changed so since I really don't have anything going on and I am not doing any training, I probably won't be updating as much. I had a lot going on when I started this and having autos finish every two weeks is exciting. Things are going to level out now that I won't be growing any auto's. I feel like the methodology and the feeding schedule is pretty good that I came up with too so I am just going to use it again. Likely I won't be going into as much detail on that stuff either since it's already earlier. Why fix something that isn't broken right?

Anyways I'll still probably do updates every few days and I'll answer questions in a timely manner ;). I don't think people will be too disappointed that my thread won't always be at the top of their subscription list anymore, likely a little relieved.

Relieved? Not at all. Respect. Yours, Ase, is definitely one of my faves. Super informative ..obliging advice...pretty pictures...and some humour to boot! What's not to love?

Auto Day 84 - Photos Flower Day 28

4 Weeks into Flower and everything is still going pretty smooth. The Flower tent is at maximum capacity and all 4 plants are doing well. The White Castle still looks almost a week behind the others but still healthy. I have stayed with my nutes schedule (the one in the beginning of this journal) the entire way. No real signs of issues and 4 weeks into flower, I am stoked for that. If I can go a couple more weeks without issues than I will be really happy.

All of the girls together

Cola shot of Amnesiac. This one got a little stretchy and isn't going to stack quite like the others.

Cola shot of Jack Herer. Jack seems to be going a little quicker than the others.

Cola shot of Tangerine Dream. All I can say is wow. This plant is blowing me away. I had told one of my friends I should have done this plant as my "one plant, one tent" plant. I had a really good feeling about this girl right off the bat. Stacking and is huge, what more could I ask for?

The babies need to be up-potted but I am one 3 gallon smartpot from being able to do so. I didn't anticipate the Cherry Bomb going this long. I ordered more and when they get here in a couple days I will put all the girls in their final homes. They are pretty happy so far and roots coming out the bottom like crazy.

Lastly the girl that keeps on going. Starting to see some hairs turn light orange now and she is going to take up more space than I want in my veg tent but the new girls will just have to deal with it. She is going nuts and starting to get fat. The colas sway with the little breeze in my tent. At least with my change to a lower ppm, balanced nute regime she seems to be sucking up the moisture better and the curling has stopped. I also spread her out just a bit to try to get the upper colas a few inches lower. Just some really light bending.

Before - A couple days ago.

After - You can see the improved color in the leaves as she starts uptaking the balanced feed.

Gorgeous plants ase. Great training on that big girl. Those fat colas are gonna give u some major weight!

Thanks Jgrow! I hope you are right. I love the way the Cherry Bomb auto looks but the buds are a little more skinny and tall than I normally like them to be. I'd say it's got about 3 weeks left and I feel like I gave it the best chance possible to succeed with my training.

Looking FANTASTIC like railways!! Always doing great work and i swear every grow u r doing better n better! Keep up the great work. Glad to be part of your journey!!

Railways lol gotta love that auto correct should b auto wrong!! Lol! Meant like always!!

My iphone auto-corrects wrong all the time. I totally feel ya on that one. Thanks for compliment. I feel like the photo girls have gone exactly how I have wanted to almost the whole time (little Jack in the beginning had me on edge but pulled through). I wonder if this will be the best (or close) I can really do with my setup/space. My tent is completely packed and each girl is growing in a perfect amount of space and getting pretty equal light. I'm sure there are theories here and there I can try out for better yields, and I can't wait to try out different nutrients at some point, but to me light and environment are the 2 biggest factors. Those won't be changing likely for a very long time. Kind of nerve-wracking really. This might set the benchmark for future grows and might really show me what my maximum potential is.

Hats off to you sir :) Its always hard to believe those 'after you trim' shots, the buds looks so dank and so beautiful. Really would like my harvests looking like that in the future :D

Yeah it's amazing what they look like when you strip them down and get rid of all the leaves. Your stuff is looking pretty good man. The leaves don't looked burned and look pretty healthy and you just have like 4 weeks left right? You have done an incredible job and I think you will be rewarded nicely. Not sure what your goals were but you have to be exceeding your expectations. I'm pretty sure your harvest will look like that in your future. You did training at all the correct times and I think it was Pat that stated that you use my nute schedule? If that is the case then I don't see why you wouldn't get similar results.

I don't remember but I thought I said it was a nute schedule that I came up with and it was based on a number of things I read and what I learned from my previous grows. You will actually finish before me so you will be the first person I know to finish a grow with it. I'm a couple weeks behind you I think. I do know you haven't quite hit all the ratios perfect but neither do I so it may end up even more like mine than you think! Lol. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear earlier, I would have felt bad if your grow had major issues.

Auto Day 87 - Photos Flower Day 31 - Photos Veg Day 1

Holy cow it has been really hot. Normally I do not need an A/C unit to keep my air at the right temperatures. I am lucky enough that if the weather doesn't get too out of hand that my grow area stays at the right temperatures. Well this week is over 100 pretty much all week and its going to be hard to keep the plants in the low 80s. Not ideal but it'll work for a short period. I have an A/C I can setup down there if it really starts to have an effect but I think I'll be fine. The tips of the photo girls showed a little bit of whiteness so I am backing off of my nutes this feed by 150ppm or so. I don't mind just a touch of burn, it shows the plant is maxed out but it's also a good sign to back off for a few days. They are all stacking and seem to be cruising along nicely.

Different view from the side of flower tent.

Babies got their transplant finally. There were white roots everywhere. Love seeing that. They were ready for their 3 gallon pots for sure. Once I see that they are taking off again I will top them and it will be business as usual.
IMG_308812.JPG

The Cherry Bomb just continues on. I'm going to see how the hairs look this week and if they start really turning orange/red then I'll flush it and start to finish her. If not and there is still a ton of white hairs then I will likely just keep on going. The curling of the leaf tips doesn't seem to be getting worse and the leaves look a healthy green now. Just in time for the final push.

Ase, do you have trays to catch water under the structure you have your plants on? It looks like a convenient setup - easily water and then take the trays out to drain.

I got really lucky and inherited a hydro table from a friend who was moving. It's kind of hard to see in the picture but it's like 3 ft by 3 ft. It had two levels so I took the legs off and plugged up the hole in the middle of the upper table and used them both as catch trays for each tent. Instead of just using metal wiring/fencing over the top (which I've seen work just fine) I decided to go with wire racks. They all drain into the tables and I have the tables angled. I then take a wet/dry vac and suck it up and dump it out. It works really well and I feel like the investment of the wire racks and wet/dry vac were well worth it. Much cheaper ways to go but I figure if at any time I need to stop growing I can just fold everything up and stack it up on the racks for storage so it serves as a dual purpose.

It's always question period in Ase's thread Suntana, he said so himself!

Thanks Ase, that looks like a great setup. The wire racks seem like an ideal addition. I have a wet / dry vac and sucking the excess out of the pots with it has worked well, but I still have to pick the plants up and pick them on a table to work with them. It must be great not having to take them out to get them to eye level.

Since its question period, another one is, how are you liking the hydroton on the bottom of your bags?

At times in my grows without it I felt like the bag had trouble draining evenly. It would get soggy in some spots on the bottom. I'm not sure how much of a difference (hard to allocate an amount) it really made but I had no such issues when I used it and the roots at the bottom seemed a lot whiter in color rather than brownish. I will continue to use it and I do think it made a positive impact. I also don't use a ton, maybe a layer of a half inch to inch at most.

The one thing I am getting rid of is perlite. I am now on board with the "it is totally unnecessary in coco" crew. I would say in soil it's a must but in coco it is not. I would rather my coco not drain/dry quite so fast in flower and removing the perlite will help with that. I have to handfeed twice a day for some of the big girls and maybe the removal of perlite will bring that down to one.

I did try hydroton in plastic and it didn't do much but take up room in the pot. Grow bags, which are new to me, are a lot different. Seems they are holding a lot more moisture. I'm watering less. When I read that you started using it, it makes a lot of sense in these bags. I'm really liking them by the way .I always ended up with salt build up a long the sides of the pots, where the roots wrapped around.
I'm down to using about 10% perlite, that shit was another cause of salt build up when I was using 30% the only reason I use it now is 3 bags of canna coco and and 10% perlite fills 10 5 gal pots perfectly lol (cheap)

Looks good. Like I've said before. I've never used perlite, so it be nice to see what kind of comparison you come up with. Just thinking about it now, you must have a stack of hand written journals.
