Ase's Multi-Strain Quadlining In Coco

Congrats on your Journal of the Month Ase! I have no doubt you deserved it!

Thanks for checking up on me. I'm not sure there's a good place to post this so I'll just post it here. I had a series of health issues but I'm doing a lot better now. I got really sick in April and couldn't get on for a few days in a row. I had some tough things happen in life that made me feel down as well. I decided to take a break to get back into good health. While on my break and recovering I injured myself very badly. I was off work for about 3 months. I couldn't use my right arm and was on painkillers 24/7. It was a really rough summer. I'm still getting regular treatment but I have improved a lot. I've gone back to work, and started growing again.

My spring grows had something of a rocky finish because of my health issues. The Violator Kush and Liberty Haze turned out great. Having to cut corners caused me to lose some Amnesia x OG and most of my Royal Gorilla to mold unfortunately.

When my last plants finished in June I was really hurting. I couldn't get through the trim on my Chemdawg and ended up curing most of it with everything still on. I managed to get the Tuna Kush and Green Crack trimmed with help. They were my best yet. The Tuna Kush is incredible!

I started 2 new plants a little over a month ago - I just picked 2 that I knew would finish in 8 weeks, because I need to have them finished by early December. I veged only 4 weeks. I'm running a Black DOG that had a bit of a rough start but is coming along - just wish I had more veg time for it. And a Royal Gorilla, which has been a stunner so far. Week 1 of flower finishes on Saturday.

Hope all is well with you. I'll see if I can find time to catch up on everything I've missed at some point. I won't be back as regularly as I was before but hopefully I can drop by to see everyone from time to time.

Oh my f*cking word! YOU ARE ALIVE! Man I've really missed seeing you around. This for sure is the appropriate place to post all that, most of the people that knew you all still follow here.

I've gotten extremely busy with new work and a different schedule so I am not on as much either. I kind of feel bad because I win JOTM and then can barely get time to answer questions but things should be more routine soon and I'll get back to checking in daily. You have missed a ton since you left (and please next time just drop an email and say you'll be out because a bunch of us were really worried about you man!). You need to get #Quadsquad in your signature. @newty started it and anyone who quadlines is encouraged to represent! Really it has gotten a grip of people to notice it and try it out. What was just a fun thing to do has actually become super beneficial.

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles but you will bounce back. That is a total bummer what happened to you but I'm glad you are at least back to say hi. Feel free to post pictures of what you are up to from time to time as well. I'm sure you'll get a journal going at some point down the road but we have all missed you and many people will be extremely happy to see you around again. It always sucks to see good people drop off the face of this forums and never come back. Especially when they are people that do well and are helpful to others in sharing their knowledge. Pay it forward right? Seriously though, I've had a really long and tiring week and this just made all that go away. I am so happy to hear from you again, no joke.

Apologies as this took me an extra extra day to get back to you. I usually am much quicker.

Here is my thought on nutrients. I like to think of my schedule that I have posted in one of the first posts as a guideline to the main 3 nutrients a plant needs. It doesn't have to be exact but coco does need to be fed/watered everyday. Because of the everyday feeding I have found that "less is more" and that you don't have to go too high on the ppm/EC scale. Some people that grow in coco will do a major feed and then just do waterings but they are treating coco like soil (which you can do) and not like hyrdo (which it should be to maximize the yield and quality). Back in the day there used to be just nutrients. Now there are hydro nutrients and coco nutrients and all that and if you look at them they are all pretty similar. I believe as long as you use them in the right ratios, you can use any nutrients for coco. I partially think that it's just a marketing scheme to call them coco and add a little more cal-mag to them. Then they come up with all these different "product lines" and people pay good money for those. Often times in those lines there are redundant things and I personally would rather just piece together my own stuff rather than buy all the additives and extras that I may not even use all of them. I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist too but really that was my degree in college so I always look at marketing and try and figure out what they twisted to sell things differently. If you have other nutrients from prior grows, you could still use them and just buy cal-mag and add it to it. I guess I could be wrong here but this is just my personal opinion. I have looked at many bottles though and if you understand nutrients, it's easy to identify similarities between the bottles and how the different nutrient companies make everything slightly different in their "product lines" so that they aren't compatible across brands. It fools people into thinking they have to only stick with theirs and not be able to piece together something good. In fact, most of the elite growers on here in the past five years don't only use products from one brand if that tells you anything.

If you've followed me in the past then you know I talk about roots and rootmass a lot. When the roots fill out then final pot then it's all out on the colas and that is what you want. I don't do organic but I love using Rapidstart (liquid) and Great White (dry) to get my roots growing fast. I've never used Voodoo and the other stuff mentioned but I know it can be really expensive and I am very happy with the price and results I get with these. Coco is weird because the rootmass matters but as long as things stay damp then it's hard to get a plant too "root bound". It really is a hybrid style of growing but you should treat everything you do as growing in hydro. The two key differences are not to have the coco too wet all the time and to get a decent rootball going. You don't do that in DWC.

I think you are on the right track and with your full hydro experiences, coco will be easy for you to learn and get adjusted too. I'm sure you have all the equipment you need too.

Thank you for your detailed post mate. Really appriciated :green_heart:

I am with you on your theory. Labels don't do much except messing with people's minds and make them spend more. The thing is, I don't have any people in my region to discuss detailed growing methods. I like to have some people around who share my thoughts on a particular subject and thats why I am spending more time in 420 Mag now than I used to. Even if you say that these are just your opinions, not facts, your confirmation on this subject means a lot and makes a great sense for me.

I couldn't agree more with you on the importance of rootmass. Most of the people with few experience, struggle more in flowering period but I think the hardest part is the proper vegetation. I usually don't have enough time to achieve a perfect vegetation period but I have some ways to support rootmass. Plants get way much taller in no time with powerful root system in flowering so I am usually doing fine. I usually keep my plants in veg for 1.5 months or so. When used to grow in hydro, plants were getting real huge and perfectly ready for flowering in 1.5 months. That, I miss :surf:

People are suggesting Humboldt Secret products very often these days. Unfortunately, I don't have a wide variety of choices when it comes to buy plant feeding products. Like you said, I combined some products from different manufacturers. I don't mind overpaying for brands but growing or smoking is not welcomed around here. That means I have to pay for cannabis like 50 times more than I pay extra for nutrients. I think the nutes here is incredibly cheap as long as I don't have to buy low shelf buds for expensive price :) I have never been to legal lands so I can easily say that the best weed I smoked so far is surely was from one of my grows. I occasionally stumble into some good stuff or even charas but that is rarely the case.

I am definately going for coco from now on. I regret my last 4 grows in soil but the future seems bright :rollit:

Yeah, sorry about not letting anyone know. I didn’t think I’d be away long then got hurt and that messed up everything. I definitely didn’t mean to worry anyone. I appreciate that you missed my presence and hopefully I can get back to helping people out soon - and shooting the shit. It’ll be good to pop by a few other journals and say hello.

I am of course still quadlining but haven’t figured out how to comfortably work on the plants so I’ve done the bare minimum of LST. But it has not been an issue. I’ll see if I can post a pic of the Royal Gorilla so you can see where I am. This abbreviated grow is definitely different.

This is my Royal Gorilla. 4 weeks veg. Halfway through the first week of flower. Coming down December 8 weekend.

Oh that looks mighty lovely sir! Glad to still see the quadline happening. You are an OG for sure, you can tell by how nice and even everything is.

Day 62 Flower Panama and ATF Clones - Day 20 Flower Multistrain

To start off, apologies for basically giving updates like every other week. My schedule has normalized now with my new work and I know what to expect. Also I am done with all my prior commitments with my old job so the craziness is going to decrease now. Looking forward to getting things back on track in this journal.

With the one tent being at day 62, I will likely start some seeds soon for the next round of girls. I am really looking forward to this next round and will be doing some heavily quadlined training again so expect that coming shortly. I plan to be super detailed with how I quadline with that tent so people don't have to go searching through the rest of the journal to find the answers.

The Multistrain tent is looking really healthy now. If you forgot, these all were kept in way too small of pots for probably a month too long. The Honeysuckle and Aurora Indica had noticeable leaf curling and a chunk of brown and yellow leaves on the bottom because of being really root bound and drying up the coco quickly. Since the Durban Poison started later than those two due to germination problems, it seemed to not have the same issues. All of them are a nice green color now but you can still see a little curling of the leaves in the Aurora Indica. I'm hoping it'll make some nice buds from here on out and get rid of that curl but only time will tell. I had to flip them and get them going along so it was kind of crapshoot to see what would happen. Neither of the two seemed to really stretch much but I'm happy with their recovery and hopefully they will still produce nice buds. The Durban Poison is just massive. Also a finicky sativa and it stretched like crazy.

The other tents girls still have a few weeks left. For what it's worth, I am shocked at how well the little pot Panama is doing. I really thought being in that small of a pot it would have major problems and I've only fed it once a day like the others. The clones are just looking super and I'm in for another great harvest of the ATF. The colas are much nicer on these and I am super happy with round 2 of the ATF. Anyone who has tasted round 1 of the ATF has had nothing but good things to say though, but I'm looking forward to a little bigger nugs and these have them. Likely because they haven't had a bit of temperature issues like the last ones had.

Front left 4 colas are the Panama and you can see how the back left ATF nugs are growing after I bent them.
What more to say about this one? She's a beauty. Expecting great numbers off both the ATFs but she just looks stunning.

That ATF looks wild - how long was your veg? I’ve tended to do a long veg to shape the plant; it has been awfully weird this time to still be really finding its shape in early flower.

I wanted to share something with you that I think you’ll appreciate.

With legalization here, I’ve finally been able to share what I’ve grown with friends and family from where I grew up, went to school, and started my career. I moved early in my professional life, and it’s been hard to find buddies into cannabis where I now live, especially since it’s not something talked about at work. Only 1 friend in my city was aware I was growing and had tasted my stuff - I otherwise kept it entirely to myself. I wasn’t about to send it in the mail and take a risk.

I was able to send my product to my friends and family legally as of Wednesday and jumped on the opportunity. The feedback was amazing. The people I grew up smoking shitty street weed with telling me my Tuna Kush was as good as anything they’ve gotten from a MOM felt awesome. I told them all as a condition of me sending it they had to send me their review!

I remember you talking about this pride in what you’ve produced before. It’s very real. Thanks for helping me get there. Your openness with your methods and willingness to help me refine mine was a big part of why I am where I am now. Growing in your style taught me a ton.

I’m hoping to move back to where I grew up next summer. A few things will need to fall into place but it seems likely. The ultimate paying it forward - helping my friends and family learn the ropes.

Aww, I love that! :green_heart:

We get knocked down, but we get up again. Welcome back.
