Amy Gardner Of Eden: Perpetually Organic

The BTi is your best weapon Amy. DE in the soil really doesn’t deter them at all, it’s been a component of my soil for years and I still get the little buggers. And as a top dress, as mentioned, once wet, doesn’t affect them any more.

I had a severe bout of gnats and thrips last indoor grow, my own fault, I flooded the tent. To combat and rid myself of them, I used BTi as both foliar spray and soil drench and also used nematodes. It took one treatment of nematodes and daily BTi treatments for about 10 days to rid my grow of the buggers, but they were thick.
Used it as a foliar for the first time last week, mixed dunks in with my 1% citric acid PM treatment. It definitely didn’t bother the ladybugs, or affect the mildew treatment. I like that stuff for how harmless it is, and fairly cheap too. Wondering if it affects mites or aphids and their babies, or is it just nematodes?

Ima need pics to decide for myself who is actually better looking.
This is a pic from when Shed and I spent Christmas at the Hampton's. I'm the one taking the pics. I'm not sure who the guy on the left is.

I remember being there! I believe it was Shed who mentioned the H2O2. I'm the better looking one in case you get confused next time.
I thought I mentioned 1:9 with 70% iso, but I may be thinking of someone else, like the guy on the left...

You couldn't wait for me and took that damn pic with Steve while I was napping, and I have never forgiven you. :grrrr:

You're right, you did mention the iso. I wonder who Boo was thinking of? :hmmmm:

Haha, right! While you were sleeping. :high-five:

I’m not sure septoria is what is was... :hmmmm: There are a few factors to consider and I’m hoping some of you will consider some of them with/for me.

I thought maybe septoria because of the nature of some of the spots.

However, it was a very small pot and the plant was 9 weeks flowering in it so it could also just have been the depletion of the soil leaving nitrogen and, in particular from the looks of them plus the nature of the progression, magnesium and potassium all lacking.

I’m harvesting anyway it but I still want to tap in to the brains trust here, in case it is something else I need to be aware of.

Here’s the leaves. They went from looking structurally great with a fair bit of ‘fade’ (end of life fade). Here they are in the last update a few days ago, for reference:

So all those upper fan leaves turned to this in about 3 days. (Starting at the highest one and progressing down).

So the fade and (some of) the spots and the fact that it was upper leaves (and progressed downward) could easily be magnesium and potassium running out in the soil.

The thing that concerns me is the fast decline to dead and the browning/blackening aspect that looked a bit fungus-like on the back of the leaves especially.

So that’s what made me wonder if it was septoria, or something else other than simply running out of gas - it seems a bit different.

To illustrate how fast they turn nasty, this is that lovely very bottom fan leaf that was looking so beautiful last week. This is after all of the other fans had shrivelled and you can see it just starting on the central leaflet.

6 hours later it looked like this

So seems like something else - I’ve definitely had plants run out of gas before and fade completely right at the end, lose all leaves etc., but I have never seen this kind of necrotic shrivelling before (for want of a better description!) and not seen it progress so fast.

So I am curious about other’s responses to that :)

It is if no consquence to the Panama as it is slated to be chopped today. A tiny bit early perhaps but not as early as I’d thought, as it turns out!

As I was ruminating about this leaf issue and about needing to get the lighting schedule in the flower space switched over, the lovely other convinced me it was time to harvest Panama and promised to help ‘tomorrow’ (now today - in a few hours).

I conceded and took a close look with the camera expecting to see many clear trichomes - I was happy to be pleasantly surprised!

Close enough for rock, let’s roll! :cheer:

It’s a harvest festival... Sour Bubba just went from hanging into paper bags.

:thumb: I’ve been keeping a mosquito dunk in my garden reservoirs for a couple of years now.

It is possible the one in there has ‘run out’ and i need to add another. Things weren’t over wet In the tent at all - but we’re are having a glut of the little buggers outside at the moment and the tent is one door away from the forest, so they’re gonna be here. Usually the BTi keeps ‘em down. I seem to have knocked off the little swell in indoor population for the minute. Have been contemplating the nematodes - i was in contact wth the place that sells them late last year, then many dystopian events have distracted that endeavour. Probably worth getting back to it.

grind up mosquito dunks and mix in top inch of soil,
That’s a good idea - I have plenty of Dunks. I’m going to do that with some! Thanks thirteen :D
If the outbreak is bad then I revert to bottom water only for a while to let top of soil dry out & put sticky traps right on top of soil too plus over canopy.
:thumb: that’s exactly what I’ve done this last week.

Had to stop blowing the fan on the soil surface tho - with all the dry DE there... o_O

Dang gnats! They are much reduced from a few days ago now.

I've never worried about the fans that do that. I've just called it fade and shrugged it off. It'll happen to me if I get careless with soil moisture at this stage of bloom, for instance. They don' like that at all, and will turn color and dry right up the next week. I've always wanted to keep everything green until the end, like so many others do, but ... c'est live. Do you have lower humidity these days?

Anyway, I doubt it's a pest or infection. Small pot, packed rootball, diminished biota ... but we're at the end, and the plant itself looks great!

Are you getting any pine from it? :bongrip:

Excellent! That’s what I’ve been thinking.

Lights on it stays nicely in the 45-55% range. Lights-off it is getting up to 65% a bit but not all the time. I expect that will be better once lights-off is during my days. I can keep a better eye on it then too.

I thought I’d been letting it dry out a lot - because of the gnats - so I dont think it was too wet.

That said - when I bottom watered it the other day it didnt want it all. Another sign we’re good to go with harvest.

Also the smells have diminished a little the last day or so, so that’s another indicator.

and...
you getting any pine from it? :bongrip:
yes! A very lavender infused pineyness with some sweet notes. It was quite disinfectant-like for a while and just this last week that aspect has softened a bit and the smell is sweeter. And maybe something like aniseed...

High Amy, nice new setup! Nice mob o' roos! The Bubba looking good and the Panama...! Dang bugs! Sorry about your prob. I got thrips in my greenhouses and inadvertently brought them into my tent indoors! Just chopped the Afghani that was in there (luckily it was ripe) and am in the process of cleaning the tent. I used spinosad, is BT more effective I wonder? I am setting up a small veg space as well. Having to spend a lot of time indoors due to smoke but it is supposed to clear soon. Have a great day in Eden. Stay stoned and stay stoneder.

Thanks Fredwak - i am having a great day in Eden. And my problems w gnat are not nearly as bad as I maybe made it sound... I’ve had much worse. Just a little population spike to manage and I have done so well keeping them out of the indoor garden completely for ages - cycles of life and death!

There are many species of BT, which stand for Bacillus Thuringiensis (sp.? Didn’t look it up ;) ) and actually it is only species isralei that works for gnat larvae (and mosquito larvae) So for gnats its BTi that you want.

i dont know if it does for thrips as well...

That could be one of the causes. I meant dry soil. If I get careless and let one get thirsty at this stage, I'll get a heavy fade and die-off of the large fans. But if it didn't take up much from the bottom ... dunno ... shoulda wicked it up if it was thirsty.

Meh - ripe and ready - who cares. :cheesygrinsmiley:
