Amy Gardner’s High Brix Dreams

Update: Blue Dream - Day 85 (+8) | Early Miss - Day 19 | DDA (d#3 & d#4) - Day 1

I have a growing family :)

More on the newer arrivals in a bit - but first... I really thought I was going to wake up this morning to a plant asking for a drench... NOPE!

That was literally at lights on! Honestly, its over 3 weeks now since transplant and I’m hanging out to give it a Growth Ionic drench... patience grasshopper!

There’s been some odd spotting and a nibble here n there - these may be related or not.

The spotting looks like this - and I do wonder if this isn’t from the leaf wash that hung around on the leaf where leaves were touching each other. Or it’s some deficiency because my roots aren’t hooked up right...

And the nibbling - there’s still some munching going on since the leafwash last week.

I looked very hard all over the plant and can’t spot anything in the underside of the leaves, even close to the nibbled areas

There was also one or two areas looking like this...like the leaf tissue has been nibbled off :hmmmm:

It’s very strange. I still have fungus gnats in very very small numbers flitting about and I’m starting to wonder if they aren’t more of a problem than I thought. There’s really not many, but what if they’re eating the root hyphae and hindering root development - which might explain the slow drinking. And the kind of nibbling is very unusual. The kind where I’d usually expect to find a little caterpillar or other kind of grub, but I cant see a thing!

In any case. She got more pruning this week - including a branch I hadn’t meant to prune... never mind.

This morning I did round one of a weaponised foliar spray routine - i used DeStress at 1/4 strength in this solo sprayer, carried it outside and gave a good spraying all over (i’ll Repeat every 3 days for 3 times). I then let it drip dry in front of the tent out of the direct light and in the fan pathway for a while. Here’s after - still looking pretty good considering these little nibbles everywhere.

Dark Devil Autos - day 1

The birth of my first DDAs feels like a momentous occasion! :slide:

They seemed quite pale at first but are greening up as they rise. Here is DDA (d4) #1 (d4 denotes that it is from dynamo’s #4 parent ;) ). This one came out with it’s seed helmet still on, but threw it off in no time. So gorgeous.

SO now... something very interesting. Something in this tent or in this soil batch is nibbling on leaf tissue... check out DDA (d3) #1

I dont think this is unrelated to the other stuff that’s happening. I’m really on a mission now. Eating my seedlings? I dont think so! I’m very curious to know if fungus gnats can do these things.

Early Miss - day 19
And finally, the lovely Early Miss. I don’t know if it’s growing as fast as it should for such a short period auto (breeder says 7weeks). It’s on day 19 and I must admit that it seems a little slow for an auto:hmmmm: Nice spacing though.

When Big Blue had this many nodes it was only about 1/3 the height!

So the family is growing and the outdoor season approaches (yay!). I’m going to slowly move the Early Miss outside over this week. Any tips on how to do this will be very welcome. I should put it in slightly shady spots to start yes, to adjust it to the different light? And maybe bring it in overnight for a little while too - but maybe I dont need to do that. It’s supposed to be good down to 10ºC and we’re up above that overnight now. Anyhoo - tips and tricks about hardening off please!

In a few weeks I’ll do the same for the DDAs and then Big Blue will be a lone wolf in the tent again.

I’m really liking having more than one on the go. And looking forward to next year’s indoor run - which will be at a better time of year and involve at least 2, maybe 3 plants.

I am still in a few minds about the outdoor strains for this year. At some point I’ll put some of them to a vote!

I better go and post that new pic of DDA(d3) in the DBHBB Q&A thread. I’ve been trouble shooting the other stuff there a bit and this nibbled cotyledon seems relevant. Then I’ll be looking much harder for info about what fungaus gnats do.

@Graytail - you recently mentioned, I think, the main ingredient in mosquito dunks and I’ve been trying to find that conversation and having no luck. What can I water into the soil that will kill the gnats without bothering the herd? I know a few gnats shouldn’t cause what I’ve got going on... but I’m leaving no stone unturned.

:surf:

Hey so check this out... Gazoo says this is fungus gnat damage...
FUNGUS-GNAT DAMAGE
46245348-9D51-424D-B08B-CFBEDCC39419.jpeg

ANd that looks like what I have going on in many places... just more advanced in Gazoo’s pic. I dont want it to go there! Better bugger off these gnats! I honestly hardly ever see one flying - but there are about 20 on the hanging strip I from the last week, so that’s a few. I remember seeing the odd one crawling in in the soil during veg - but word was that teh hangin strip should do the trick. MAybe the fact that this soil mix has super powers when it comes to water retention is helping the little buggers... the plot thickens!

Hey Amy! That Early Miss looks like she’s starting off like mine did ! Take a look through the beginning of my journal and look at her growing! Looking similar to my now lovely Scrog EM “auto” 77 days lol

Everything is looking amazing happy and healthy great job!!

:thumb: The active ingredient in mosquito bits (also kills fungus gnats) is Bacilus thuringiensis. I didn't worry about the fungus gnats I've had, but it looks like I should have. I also have to wait for soil to dry and seem like my roots are lacking vigor. Time for bug warfare :Namaste:

No I didn’t mean to hit quote but my fat fingers did lol! Phones aren’t meant for me lol

Yes... that’s what I was thinking too :hmmmm:. If that is the case, I’m going to end up with one big Early Miss  Time will tell I suppose

Everything is looking amazing happy and healthy great job!!

:thanks:

Thanks! Maybe it was you who mentioned that Bacilus thing recently and not Gray, like I thought. Definitely time for warfare. This has been niggling at me for weeks, wiht these tiny little spots in places. Weird that it seemed to escalates after the Leafwash :hmmmm: Not saying that caused anything.. just that the little blighters obviously don’t mind it!

I’m slowly developing a small list of items I will have to ask the next stateside person sending me a package to include in it for me. Mosquito dunks aren’t available here... unless I pay $20 in shipping!

Trying to find an equivalent here and not having much luck yet. I’ve also been trying to get this product called No Salt - for the blood volume booster I’m supposed to be using (I’d be taking it with salt added - it’s just a really good source of other things). I cant get that here either, and I bought some on eBay that never came (got refunded eventually) and then I got a pretty weird message from the seller, so I wont be trying that again! SO that’s 2 things on the list. I swear one day I’m gonna buy a birch of stuff, have to shipped to one of you and then ask you to send it in one package... so I pay postage once! I’m sure postage costs have done some kind of meteoric rise in the last 5 or so years. All this online shopping and shipping... you’d think it would get cheaper, but no!

Isnt Diatomaceous Earth supposed to help with gnats? Maybe @InTheShed can give some tips on hardening off your plants? I just progressively keep them out longer and move in the sun longer and longer until they are good on their own. I try to be patient, but three days is about as long as I have patience before I just leave them.

Dang gnats! I didn’t know they could be so destructive and I have a few hanging around usually. #ladybirds Also I’m going to water in some diatomaceous earth, I hear that works for larvae

As far as hardening her off. I let mine enjoy the outdoors for the day and then inside on my kitchen table at night for about a week and then they went into the greenhouse for a couple weeks. I would shade them off and on the first couple days but they should adjust well and get bigger in my experience :D

Thanks newty and archi! I’ll start giving EM some time in the sun from tomorrow I think.

So I have found only one source of Bacillus Thuringiensis in this country. It’s a product called Bacchus WG Biological Insecticide. It’[s exactly the stuff. And the smallest quantity is 1kg and that costs $99. I kid you not. Chalk that up as another one of those things that is ridiculously expensive and/or nearly impossible to get here ($15-$20 for a 400ml bottle of h202 remember). I’m going to have to pay the $20 shipping on eBay I think! At least it’s less than $99  so weird... now it almost feels like i’m getting a bargain LOL!

I know it’s unfortunate that this will cost you some money, but the plants are really looking fantastic AG!

I’m excited because I started cooking my soil today! Woot woot I’m on the HiBrix train toot toot!

Woohoo Archi!:high-five:

Yep it’s all good - well not all good, gnats themselves aren’t good if they’re a problem but there’s still a pretty good looking couple of plants in there :)

I’m always learning to read the situation too, and I’ve been ‘reading something on & off for a while, or at least fell like I have, so it will be intersting to go about making sure I have none of these gnats in future and see what differences it brings, if any. I’m told that fungus gnats can come in in the Peatmoss so I should always be prepared to do some eradication early on, from now on, I think.

I dont have any DE right now or I’d just do that. Ordering mozzie dunks now. :surf:

I used the DE for my gnats. I just wore a dust mask and put a lot of powder on the top of the soil and then blended it into the top inch. And I harden my plants for a few days in bright shade with dappled sunlight. If you can move them then I would go morning sun, then shade them the rest of the first day, then a bit more each day until they're happy in the noon day sun (along with mad dogs and Englishmen).

BD training looks great Amy! Even as you were hesitant in the beginning, you found your eye and now it's spot on. :goodjob: (By the way I hate the wink in that emoji...does it have to be sarcastic?)
