Amy Gardner’s High Brix Dreams

Hey Arch. If you already have the 7s then go with it but if not, I recommend 10s or even 15s (what I use) but you can easily do 4 in a 4x4, any of those pot sizes. @overlord is doing 9 in 8s in a 4x4 right now. 4 tens is perfect for 1 kit and fit well. Let us know if you have any other questions.

apologies if I derailed your journal a little AG.
No talk of organic gardening, high brix shenanigans or ganja anything would be derailing this journal Archi!
No problems at all - I was only meaning that it isn’t the fastest way to get the big man’s (Doc’s) response. But like I said, there are plenty of other brixers here regularly to answer questions as well. It’s all good :thumb: Great, even!
:Namaste:

Tha

Thank you Doc and AG! Hey so in SoCal it’s about to start getting a little cooler in my garage. Cooler than you would like for me to cook. Is there any issue with cooking longer? Say two months? As I said I’d love to take my time research the hell out of your thread and grow an 8 week autoflower to use up the rest of my coco an AN nutes.

I have a hunch as long as I keep it moist and turn it occasionally, it would be fine. I’d be sure to insulate from the floor as you suggest too.

I'm responding to this before seeing what others have said....

The thing with cooking soil is to use room temps....and make sure the barrel isn't sitting on a cold concrete slab or a metal floor, etc. A huge heat sink like that will freeze your soil microbes. Room temps.....65-85.

Once you mix it up real good dry, and wet it down, you don't really have to re-mix it unless the top went completely dry....usually it's moist and the lid of the garbage can should be sweaty.

Don't overthink it...it's not hydro. Just mix it all up and get it wet and let it cook in a barrel for a month.

Right on man, thanks! I know you're busy so I appreciate you answering here. Its safe to say you have a future customer in me. Thanks for all the knowledge and time you share with the community as well.

Actually man, four 10's and a little leftover for cloning and one gallon containers could be nice.... this stuff is exciting man!

Ahh cool cool! Its funny that I stumbled across your journal because I have literally been telling myself I need to change my growing medium up. I like coco, but its never felt as intuitive as growing in soil. Plant starts to droop, time for water, etc.
I also really like the idea of having a living soil and having that soil working for me..all the time. Not to mention I know the herb must have a better terp profile and be healthier for us all.

I would suggest buying a bulk kit and mixing at least 2 kits worth of soil. That way you have another batch of soil ready to go when your 1st harvest is done. We usually run a kit of soil 3 times. Each run requires adding more amendment and a 30 day cook. Each run gets a little better than the last. You'll wan to start your seeds in 1st run soil for best results. Welcome to HB growing. You won't ever go back to bottle nutes again.

getting nice and flat on top
IKR!

I actually had zero plans to flat top anything! It’s just kind of where the plant has led me, if that makes sense. I was also expecting about a 6week veg and I’m coming up on 10weeks now... gonna be bigger than I planned :hmmmm: Not complaining of course... this indoor caper is... quite a caper! I’m most likely going to flip it this Sunday - then I’ll find out what happens when you do that. #firsttimeindoors

The one I'm just finishing was like that. It provided a perfect place to top, and then the lower branches all came up to the canopy, almost on their own.

I made the first step today by buying some one gallon and ten gallon pots. I also finally got a way to run water in my garage now. It’s a little ghetto but there’s already time for making it look pretty.

I ran some plumbing in here because my water is 7.1ph from the faucet about 350ppm. So I’ve decided to at least look into RO water. Is there a RO kit you guys would recommend to someone who needs maybe 20gallons of water a week?

Edit: grow shop guy recommends the Stealth RO 150 from hydro logic.

right on Ill check em out, thanks TB!

Edit: Quick searching is looking promising! this unit is a third the cost the grow shop guy wanted to sell me. Though that one is 150 gpd rather than 50gpd. I dont need 150gallons per day man. Ill put a float valve in whatever res I pick and call it done

Sorry I can't recommend any RO systems. I don't use my water either but I do reclaim enough from the mini split and dehumidifier that I usually have more than I need to water my garden. In the winter it is too dry to completely keep up so I buy 2.5 gallon jugs of distilled water to get me through. I don't like how much water RO systems waste and I don't want to have my well pump running more than it needs to.

You know @Archiweedies - I don’t know what your set up is like, but if there’s any way you can harvest rain water that’s about the best. You can get small simple setups going for not much dollar if you have somewhere to put it - and some DIY chops :)

Neiko - I’m fascinated you use water from the dehuey - I’d avoided that because I had some notion that I’d read it was not a good idea. I have a good quality dehuey and it would be great if I could use that water!

When I grew up there was always a drought so they had this crazy ad campaign about “Don’t be a waterhog” and they had a warthog cartoon who wasted tons of water by washing his car everyday, overwatering his lawn and taking super long showers. It also had a silly song that always stuck with me. So recently when researching water filters I was shocked to find out how much RO wastes. They do have “zero-waste” filters but they just pump the waste into your hot water tank, I have an on demand heater so that won’t work, or they recirculate waste water and filter it again and again with extra costly filters.

I just got a mini-split a couple weeks ago (it’s amazing) it never occurred to me to collect water from it, awesome idea.
