Alaskan1's Flo n Gro Mixed Bag Grow

Ok, so here's my lil story.........
Last night I pop the res lid to check my PH and PPM. Saw the bad brown sludge ring which is a tell tale sign of the dreaed root rot........Picked up a pot, yeppers it's back. Ugh fuck me!
So added some H202 and let it go for the night. Was way too late in the early morning to do anything about it and I was going to need help.

Got up at 10am and got started.

Removed all the plants from the system. They got a H202 dip bath of 15ml per gal and then got all the roots rinsed off. While my wife was doing this I completely tore down the entire 18 pot flo n gro system.

Filled the bath tub with 3 cups of bleach and hot water and started cleaning all the buckets and hoses.
As I finished with the buckets my wife was wiping them down with vinegar and then let them air dry.
Cleaned EVERYTHING, even cleaned the tent with bleach.
Refilled the res and put in 24 cups of H202 and right now they get a 2 hour soak of that. Then I let them breathe for 15 minutes then reflood them for another 2 hours until I have a total of 6 hours flood time.

Will dump the res when that has completed and then refill the res with half strength nutes and full hygrozyme.

On Monday night late will dump everything again and go to 3/4 nutes and hygrozyme and Orca.

Hopefully this will kick it's ass for the rest of this grow. We are tossing out the Blueberry mother as we think she is very susceptible to getting the rot so she is going outside to grow. If she survives then she does. If not, oh well

Hey there A1. I can only imagine the sheer amount of work to accomplish that. :thumb: I give such props for going the full mile on trying to rid the culprit from your garden.
I sure hope your ladies will fully recover.
Good luck and :peace:

Rot root agian? Man oh man that suks.

So lets sit here and think whats going on.

It's not the res temps. you have a chiller and it works well I've read.

so lets think whats going on. You drain and fill the buckets how long are they drained? Hrs? then refilled for so long 20min? something? and then drained again? for hrs?
How hot you say it is inside the bucket when there is no water cooling the roots? can you get a temp prob in there? I bet it's hot as hell when the lights are on and there's no wa wa in their buckets. like leaving ya dog in the car with the windows up on a hot summer day. hot, wet, humid=root rot

try this only completely drain your system when the lights are off. while the lights are on fill and drain more often the cool water flooding from the res will keep the roots cool, you just need to flood more often. I'm betting to control bucket temps.

Just a ideeer :peace:

That's the only other thing that seems to fit... We need a team of diagnosticians like on House to work this one out... Oh wait! WE HAVE THAT!! 420 Magazine! Hey Twelve12, can you add anything?

The system does not flood when the lights are off.

The buckets do retain a little bit of water in the bottom. So, they do have a bit. Titan did this on purpose.

The root rot began with me not putting H202 in when I did a res change. BIG mistake.

Currently the res temps are pretty cool so flooding more often won't help but thanks for all the thoughtful ideas! :thumb:

Thanks Msquared!
It was a shitload of work.
We only have about 5 weeks left in the grow so I'm not about to loose 18 plants now

Well here is what I think is going on.

I took a clone from a bluberry plant that had root rot. Turned it into a mother. Made clones from that mother and put them in the grow. I didn't add H202 one week and the combo of the two gave me the rot.

Did you ever add air stones to the buckets? and let me tell ya about air stones if ya haven't yet this may help ya plan out the system. Don't T any of the lines going to buckets. when one stone starts to go bad it creates a domino effect getting worse while the other stone works better as it gets more pressure causing the failing stone to get worse even quicker.
Myself with air stones or even with out them. I would drain the buckets when ever the water temp would rise above the 68 mark. drain 10-15 min let the water settle in temps and then refill the buckets. don't over fill them keep the water at the bottom of the net or at most at 1" above.

Yea the flo n gro system doesn't work like that. Here read this and it might help you understand the system

yeah, but with all the problems you're having with the current... wouldn't you want to get all that worked out first?

Everything else has been worked out. Got res temps down, room temps down, new venting completed. Thats why I have been gone for the most part. Fixing all this crap.
The root rot was just something I had thought I had beat from the last time I battled it..........apparently not. I think I read on the WSU website one of the grad students saying in a report....." you never get rid of root rot, you just keep it a bay."

I have to give MAD props to Bassman. His help in the root rot issue has helped me tremendously. I varied a bit from what he does since I have a different system. I added a few things but his suggestion of letting the roots soak for 6 hours almost has them looking white again. I will not say the root rot is gone but the roots look 90% whiter from what they were. Please everyone give Bass a rep for me.

Bass, :Namaste::thankyou::high-five::hugs:
Next time I'm in Nevada I'm buying you all the booze and food you can handle!

Ok, I'm finished for the night in the grow room. Everyone is put to sleep and happy (for the moment)
16 hours later all the work has been completed on the ol root rot issue. Roots look happier and we will see what they look like in the morning. Had one tragedy today. Broke a BIG ASS ol cola today. Lemon Kush took a hit. Taped it up but that didn't hold so tied it to another cola. I'll look at it in the AM and see if I can make a better repair. It's currently lights out.
