Afgoo - First Time Seed Grow

Hey Aston,
I believe at this stage you and I will both be facing (3) last phases of the grow.
1. Flushing
2. Drying
3. Curing

I have heard different opinions about flushing.
1. No need to flush if drying/curing process is completed correctly.
but I will be!!!
Now this statement was also directed toward synthetic chemical grows.
2. Flush when 50% of trichomes turn from clear to amber
Yes I like this 1!!!
3. Flush when 75% of pistols turn from white to brown or red.
yes, this is for harvest
Now I have also heard this as a gauge to harvest.
4. Flush the last 2 weeks before harvest
this is what I am planning on, but its hard to tell with them being outdoors!!!
5. Flush once just before harvest
I was actually thinking about doing the water and molasses trick!!! (water and molasses in a bucket, pull plants, clear off the root ball free of soil, set plants in for about 1 day!!!) but again, being outdoors, don't know if im going to do this!?!?!?

Does anyone have any opinions on this?
It would great to hear from people who have tried the different methods.
Which method are you going to use Aston?

Me, I'm kind of shooting for the 2 week before harvest method.
Sometimes it is hard to gauge specifically when that 2 weeks will be though, but I guess you can get pretty close. I have one plant where it seems all trichomes have turned amber. I started flushing that one. The 2nd plant is about 50/50 and I waited on that one cause the buds still don't look as swelled as I want them to be so I fed full nutrient dose. The 3rd is the least matured and still feeding full nutrient dose.

I believe the goal is to get as fat of buds as you can while leaving yourself enough time to flush and not starving your plant of nutrients. I suppose the organic nutes would be less of a concern about flushing, but I have also heard that they too can amount to a bad smoke if you don't flush them. Not sure if this is true or not.

Whats good DBM!!!
If my calculations are correct right now, I just started week 5!!! so yea almost about that time!!! I have some interesting details that i will be posting in a minute!!!

:peacetwo:

UPDATE

OK, so no pix today!!! but I just wanted to make a note that I started the BPN nutes on this feeding day of 8/28/2011, i put it in to full strength flowering nutes!!! im sure this is probably advised against, but you know I think they can handle it seeing as how they have been on the FF Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom at full strength ever since veg!!! well not the Tiger Bloom til flower, but still!!! anyways, I did a Flush on the 27th so I could get the FF out of the soil, now the BPN is in there!!! LET'S SEE HOW THESE WRAP UP NOW!!!

pix should be up tomorrow!!!

Hey Double -G,

That's some good information, thanks.
I've been reading up on Molasses and read where Jorge Cervantes conducted an experiment using molasses where he added it to his irrigation water during the last 4 weeks of flowering. He found the buds swelled 20%.
I think I am going to be taking my (_|_) over to the hydro store tomorrow to check some of this stuff out. I have also confirmed with some buddy's of mine that they too had similar success using products such as Flora Nector by GH and Bud Candy. They said they very the application. Some start dishing it out during the 1st week of flowering, others wait until the last 3 weeks. Anyway, it sounds like one of those "Must Use" supplements to me. I will certainly add it to my list.

Good info to know about the Trichomes.
It makes sense that they can change so fast.
I noticed huge differences in short periods of time.
I suppose with all the variables it is tough to place a time duration on the changing phases.

That is an interesting study that you described.
Now you say the plant that was indoors longer developed thicker trichomes than the one outdoors. Now the question is whether these higher UV levels are making the plants more potent, or less potent? :hmmmm: I think I am to medicated right now to think any more about that.. :loopy:

Damn, that is one sick microscope.
Very impressive. Hopefully someday in the near future I can budget enough greenbacks for one of those. I will try to go through your journal and read more. Awesome stuff :thumb:

I will checkout your Plantation brand Molasses product too. If it's good for the Jalepenos it must be good for our ladies :smokin:

Cool! Glad you found all that info helpful to your grow! You guys are basically at the point where you need to start thinking about using this stuff.

Before you go spending a lot of hard earned $$$ on any commercial FLUSH mixtures, I would seriously consider just making your own using my recipe. All those products designed for fattening buds are basically variants of a sugar based solution. Just read the ingredients on the back and the percentages used, and it will start to be obvious.

Why spend 15-30 bucks for a bottle of something you can make for $2.00?

All the ingredients needed for my home made flush solution total about $15.00 and is enough to make about 30 gallons of the stuff!

I use Coopers Brand Dextrose which is a home brewer product that beer makers use to make Beer, so any shop in town that caters to wine or beer making will have that. The hardest one to find is the Sodium Benzoate, although the same shop may sell that too.

I bought both ingredients on Amazon since we are 60 miles from any major city and none of the Mom and Pop stores up here carry any of this stuff. Well... They do sell the table sugar! :laughtwo:

Interesting info from Jorge C.! The man is the Pot Guru, so you can take whatever he says to the bank! Always nice to see something you have used for years, backed up by someone with his reputation! :thumb:

The Bud Swelling is real! Just look at my recent harvest photos of my BlueBerry Kush plants on my grow journal! They were flushed in exactly the way I suggested starting with the BlackStrap/Water and then the Dextrose/Sugar/Water flush for the last two weeks.

Definitely let me know how those additions to your feeding schedules works for you guys!

Take care and don't be a stranger over on my journal! :circle-of-love: :Namaste:

totally agreed my friend. I just thought i could get a bottle for like 8 bucks (so i had read somewhere). Upon further investigation i found enormous pricing for this stuff. I will be looking into the ingredients you mentioned today and see if i can pickup locally. Thanks man! Appreciate you trying to save your fellow growers some money.

yeah he seems to really know his stuff. It was funny, i have been watching his videos lately and had mentioned them to some of my friends. I commented that he looked like a stange dude with his dreadlocks and all. Then i was told that the dreadlocks was just a wig. Haha, i never knew that. I thought that was his real hair. Lol

yes, i understand that is one crucial phase in determining when your buds are at their ripest point. This is when the calyxes swell. I understand this only happens for like 3 days. I first read where the best gauge for flushing is when trichomes turn 50/50 from clear to cloudy. By looking at my buds i decided that is to early, as they are not near at the developed stage that i feel they should be flushed. I have one where the trichomes have turned 100 percent from clear to cloudy and it seems much closer to the flushing stage. I think i will start flushing when 70 percent of the pistols turn from white to red or brown. What do you think? I believe that like we talked about there are a lot of variables. What is the best time for some, may not be for others. I guess you learn that as you become more experienced and have grown several strains in different situations.

definitely let me know how those additions to your feeding schedules works for you guys!
are there any other supplements that you feel are a "must use" during a grow? Next year i think i will try all organic nutes instead of the synthetics i used this year. I like to try different things and experiment. I will surely keep you updated on your molasses recipe when i get my hands on the ingredients.

take care and don't be a stranger over on my journal!
are you sure you mean that gg :laughtwo:

Hey Double G,

Will this molasses work? (I have the bottle on the left of the image)
It is not Blackstrap, but I had it in my kitchen.

It needs to be UNSULPHURED. Does yours say that on the bottle? If it does, then you should be good to go! If it doesn't then find a brand that is. :MoreNutes:

Here are the details from the side of my bottle of Plantation for comparison:

INGREDIENT: UNSULPHURED BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES

Serving Size: 1 TBSP
Calories: 42
Sodium: 10mg
Potassium: 600mg
Sugars: 11g

Percent Daily Values are based on 2,000 calorie diet

Calcium: 20%
Iron: 20%

Yeah, my bottle says "Unsuphured."
The other values seem a bit different. The salt content is a little higher, which may not be as good in the soil.. (not sure).

Serving Size = 1tbsp
total fat= 0
calories = 60
Sodium= 30mg
Potassium 349mg
total carbs 15g
sugars 11g
protein 0

Yeah.. That is a pretty high Sodium level. I wouldn't use that brand for plant food purposes.

I have been checking a few different brands on the web, and Plantation looks to be the KING when it comes to the right balance for plant food use. I had NO IDEA how varied different brands of BlackStrap could be! Just assumed that all were basically the same which they are obviously not. It was the FLAVOR of Platation that originally got us hooked on that brand since we do a lot of baking in the winter. :)

Buyer Beware appears to be the rule of the day! ;)

If your local grocery stores don't carry Plantation, see if you have any local health food stores around. Back in the day, you could only find Plantation at specialty food stores like that.

I asked our local grocer to order me some a few years ago when we couldn't find any up here, and now they say it is their best selling brand! :thumb:

Hey there everybody,

now i have been reading everywhere that Afgoo is a Clone only strain that you can grow??? I dont understand this, how is that i got a bunch of seeds from some Afgoo that i ordered from a dispensary,

Hi
I know I am late as usual and you will have harvested by now.
I have been growing Afgoo for 3 crops now.
It is a small bushy plant with the dankest and stickiest bud and leaf I have ever seen. I let mine go for 65days flowering.
As far as seed go: Afgoo is 'Afghani No. 1 x Maui Haze' THE afghani is the Dad.
There is no Dad Afgoo, I did stress my first grow with a light leak and got a few hermies that polinated most of them thus the seeds.
I did not try to grow with the seeds as (In my experience) they produce Hermies.
I hope your grow was great?
I don't think I will read this whole thread as it is a monster LOL

Ok... for those of you following our discussion regarding the use of Malasses.
I have been spending the day searching high and low for the Plantation brand "Blackstrap" Molasses that Double G has recommended. I was just about ready to give up when I made my last call to my local Whole Foods Organic store. I was happy to hear they carry (3) different variations of this brand in both Organic and the standard.
I believe Double G recommends the standard brand and not the organic version.

Anyway just wanted to share this info in case anyone here is interested. I believe they have Whole Foods stores all over the place.

I am now heading out to get me a bottle of the stuff :)

Awesome! :thumb:

I figured your best bet would be a health food store or specialty store. Whole Foods carries the BEST brands so no surprise there!

You are correct Sir! I use their original version with the big BLACKSTRAP slapped diagonally over their trademark picture.

Remember to use only 15ml per gallon and PH the water to be safe. Our water here is right around 7.0 to 7.5 (spring fed) so my Molasses mix tends to PH down to about 6.2.

I also suggest mixing this in the kitchen sink using HOT water for the first cup or two into you watering can. Hold the measuring spoon with the Molasses under the stream to dissolve the syrup.

Then I quickly switch to cold water to finish filling my 2 gallon watering can. The stuff is THICK and hot water works like a charm to quickly dissolve it.

Your mileage may vary. ;)

question........ molasses what can and will it do? i know lots use it,
(sorry sound like d____ asking) but hey we all have our moments.....lol:scratchinghead::confused:

Hey SRJC,

It is implied that Molasses is designed to provide carbohydrates and amino acids that help regulate your plants metabolism. Basically it makes the buds swell and grow bigger.
It also apparently enhances the flavor. I will be experimenting with this. I have read that some use it all the way through the flowering stage, and others use it during like the last 3 weeks of flowering. Double G uses it at like week 6 every 2nd watering and then at week 7 through harvest he switches to his own sugar concoction.
