300w LED - Sunset Kush

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Doc, was reading your post here...

Do you think this really applies with perlite in hempy buckets?

My tap water runs about 290 ppm mostly from dissolved limestone. I have to give a gallon of water a pretty good belt of pH down to lower it to 5.8 (a lot more than I need to use with distilled water). It would be nice to find an effective way to offset that alkalinity without having to resort to RO filters etc.
I've read that vermiculite is often used to moderate the alkalinity of soil. Do you think that it would serve that same purpose in a hempy bucket? Do you suppose that the original hempy "recipe" included vermiculite for more than just moisture retention?

Thanks for your insights!

This still applies to hempy, although not nearly as much as it does in soil.

I haven't heard of vermiculite being used to moderate alkalinity before. In other words, I plead ignorance on the matter. Mostly, people use soil acidifiers, like a great product from Epsoma. I've used hempys with both perlite and mixed with vermiculite. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference.

As for your water, just mix it 50/50 with RO and you've got nothing to worry about. Hell, you may not need to worry about it the way it is. What do the plants tell you?

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

My inclination is to go with the free seeds first. Any input?

In the meantime, great job SS, I will be following the grow.

I think going with the free seeds first is a good idea. Better to gain some experience with those than with more valuable seeds.

thanks stevehman, glad you're following ;)

Hey Setting Sun,
I'm in for your grow. Though I wish you would have expressed that you secretly work for some LED tech company and are a cross-dressing, covert spy for the Canadian government trying to entrap MMJ patients with lip gloss, dark glasses and a Pulp Fiction black wig. Your beautiful, sexy legs threw me off but now that you've been outed as a capitalist, subversive, carpetbagging, snake oil salesman I have new found respect for your growing skills. So tell me, isn't it difficult watering in stiletto heels?
Peace Bro!

Hey bro,

Just because a guy cross dresses doesn't mean he's a capitalistic snake oil salesman.

Setting Sun's cross dressing shouldn't be a factor in this grow.

:rasta:

I'm glad we can all be mature about this.

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Thanks for your reply SS!

My plants also seem happier with tap water. Went with distilled for a while which was probably counter productive (and expensive!).
:thankyou:

you're very welcome GMH, glad you're following this grow;)

Yep, I'm going to try straight tap water ph'ed to 6.0 and see how it goes before using fancier water.

I screwed up when I reported my tap water's ppm, it's 245 not 145, but I'm still going to try it.

I would *love* to just use tap water.

If that works, next step would be seeing how it works with the OC+ without being PH'ed down. Out of the tap, it runs 7.1.

It would be so wonderful to just open the tap and water my plants.

These are some pics I came across while surfing the net about a year ago that got me interested in these self-watering pots.

I had already seen them at X-Mart, and was curious about them, but I picked up a few after coming across these.

The root ball pic shows how the roots don't penetrate into the res.

so, the question is not one of whether they work or not, it's whether *I* can make them work or not ;)

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Setting Sun,
Wow, that's the kind of Christmas tree I want to have! It will certainly be interesting to see how the self watering pots work for you in this hempy grow. Almost grabbed some at wally world yesterday

I'd like to correct something I said yesterday...
I've read that vermiculite is often used to moderate the alkalinity of soil.
And DocBud replied..
I haven't heard of vermiculite being used to moderate alkalinity before.
Doc, you probably haven't heard of that because it's incorrect. What I'd read about was gypsum, not vermiculite.
Though, it still begs the question of whether maybe gypsum would effectively serve as a buffer against tap water with high "total alkalinity". Don't know exactly what gypsum would turn into in a hempy bucket - might get sort of gelatinous.
Sorry if I'm beating this subject to death...on to more important things:bong:.

Nice plants bro! Keep up the good work:goodjob: Im in on this one, i to want to learn more on autos!

Autos are interesting little plants, with several paradoxes.

For instance, it's claimed that they are good plants for beginners, and that's true in the sense that they are hardy and easy to grow. On the other hand, they have a finite lifespan, so if you make any mistakes growing them, the harvest *will* suffer. They won't recover from mistakes like normal plants.

Another paradox is that while they are compact above ground, their root system tends to be large and extensive, with a very aggressive taproot. They are small plants, but they need at least 2-gallon containers to reach their potential.

They don't generally do well with topping or LST because they don't live long enough to benefit from it.

If you want the advantages of autos without any of the disadvantages, you can get them by growing normal photo-period plants at 12/12 from seed, or just veg them short for 1-2 weeks.

The only advantages to autos is the ability to do multiple outdoor harvests, and maybe being able to easily keep a continuous harvest going from a single grow space, but they're interesting little plants and fun to grow.

You could actually do a continuous harvest grow in a single space using 12/12 with normal plants and burn less energy, but I still like em, lol.

There's certainly enough auto strains to choose from these days. The sativa-dom autos are a good thing for indoor growers who like sativas, although again, you could grow a normal photo-period sativa-dom plant 12/12 from seed and keep it pretty short too.

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Here's some pics at 25 days.

They're looking pretty good, and I think they will look even better once the roots reach bottom.

Yesterday, they were droopier and a bit lighter in color. I think the Osmocote may take a few days to build up nutes in the medium right after a transplant, so I gave them some GH Maxi nutes and they perked up.

The Osmocote release rate is mediated by temperature, which has been running 78 in the perlite, so that's not the issue, but I think it probably just takes a few days for the concentration of nutes to build up.

They're growing and getting bushy. No signs of flowering yet. They smell skunky and strong. Not at all stealthy from that aspect, at least these examples.

I dropped the light down to 20" and they seem to be doing OK with it, but I'm watching closely for any signs of stress.

Hey Setting Sun, nice journal. I'm in on this one too. I like the idea of the autos and I have mike's Spectra 120w rite now growing 2 bagseeds that are out of control. GLH is the LED of choice for those in the know. Great work. Great pics. What size is the tent?

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

hey just to let you know when the girls get older, ive been keeping my 300's at around 14" and as you've seen in the pics their loving it. just thought i would share that info with you. know IMO i think its best to have the light higher until you see some good flowers forming then lower the light. ive seen allot of grows with lights being kept too close during the 1st few weeks of flowering and they were worst then when it was higher at 1st. just keep that in mind.

the girls look great getting nice and big, huge leafs on those lady's

Yeah thats true about the 12/12 from start huh. But theirs just something about autos that is yes pretty fascinating to me haha:Hookah: So would it be cool to use say for instance 4 6500k cfls for about 3-4 weeks then switch it to 2500k for the rest of the time or would it be better to mix match the cfls all throughout the grow? Example 3 6500k 1 2500k for 3-4 weeks then 3 2500k and 1 6500k for the rest? Just curious haha thanks bro happy growing!:ganjamon:

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Howzit Setting Sun, hope you don't mind another hungry LED noob absorbing some knowledge. I've seen your postings around and I'm confident I'll learn some valuble intel.

Very interested in these Autos too as I popped a freebie bean almost 4 wks ago (N Lights) and she's been 24/0 from birth (another new exper).

And yeah, contradictions abound! Described as great for cloning which makes little sense to me cause 90day Mom could have a 145day daughter?

And oops, I just LST'd her a couple days ago using Irishboy's style. This baby is much more vigorous growing than her outside only cousins by 66% (ie Outside 3wk old W Widow & NY-47 aver 3" vs 3wk 24/0 NL @ 5").

I keep her in sun then move to lights (CFLs until Jul 3d when I switched to the supa bright 180w LED), which she adores BTW.

It's been a while since I've seen drama on these threads but can't wait for my fake cola....no rubber for me, Carbon Fiber Baby!

Peace! :peacetwo:

re: 420 Consumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Lowryder II by Setting Sun

Hey guys was wondering what do you think about starting a grow( hydro res 5 fem'd NL from seeds) under a 288 watt LED ? How high up would you start off for seed germination?, using my old SH bubble res to start them off I was going to put the seeds right in the rockwool (worked before with HPS) and just go from there !? Never used these new lights before so any help from your experience would be appreciated ! Thanks :peace:
