This still applies to hempy, although not nearly as much as it does in soil.
I haven't heard of vermiculite being used to moderate alkalinity before. In other words, I plead ignorance on the matter. Mostly, people use soil acidifiers, like a great product from Epsoma. I've used hempys with both perlite and mixed with vermiculite. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference.
As for your water, just mix it 50/50 with RO and you've got nothing to worry about. Hell, you may not need to worry about it the way it is. What do the plants tell you?
Doc, was reading your post here...
Do you think this really applies with perlite in hempy buckets?
My tap water runs about 290 ppm mostly from dissolved limestone. I have to give a gallon of water a pretty good belt of pH down to lower it to 5.8 (a lot more than I need to use with distilled water). It would be nice to find an effective way to offset that alkalinity without having to resort to RO filters etc.
I've read that vermiculite is often used to moderate the alkalinity of soil. Do you think that it would serve that same purpose in a hempy bucket? Do you suppose that the original hempy "recipe" included vermiculite for more than just moisture retention?
Thanks for your insights!
