Im very interested to see if the GS outperforms the chinese unit. I dont suppose in the end we could get a peak inside each of the units?

Thanks Ricky, the plants look dark because of the weird white balance adjustment I did with my camera to try and make them look 'normal'. I've not really tried to fart around with the settings manually to tone down the brightness of the LED's and maybe use the flash. Thanks for the idea! Since one of the lights belongs to a sponsor, I would only open it up if he allowed me to. And I'm willing to bet he says 'no, please'

LOL! I was thinking about taking pics tonight, but I'm gonna wait until sexing is done. I can tell you right now though, there's 5 plants under Side A, one confirmed female in a 2 gallon Air Pot now, and there's 6 plants under Side B, with, again, one confirmed female in a 2 gallon Air Pot.

I've pulled 2 runts and a male since I've begun; I can tell you for sure that overall, on both sides, the SSH are looking rougher than the UA's. I think that I might have let them get a bit too long between waterings - I watered them all last night with 5ml/gal of SSU and molasses - all are looking much perkier. I am also starting to think that they're all getting a wee bit light bleached so I'm going to bring the lights back up to 36" as was the start.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I know from experience, people are only interested in the bud porn and end results, so I'm being sparing on the pictures.

Thanks to you hypnotictonic! It's been interesting so far to see the subtle differences in the growth of the babies under side A vs. side B. Some are expected, some not so much
No matter the end result, this will add to the volumes of data coming out now by growers HERE that LED's are here to stay, and they're as effective as the old-school HID lighting.

I am in the process of building my grow room now. So all the info I pick up will be used.

Does he also have a betamax and laserdisc player? Some people are set in their ways and have a closed mind. The Lite-brite revolution is coming though.

It's odd, I'm no spring chicken, and though you'd think I'd have started in the traditional methods, I jumped right in with LEDs. It was never a question in my mind that they (LEDs) would one day be *the* new way to grow and grow well.
Even my growing pal is loving the LED unit I'm loaning him - open minded, right?

Welcome Insuranceguy! Just watch and see how this goes - I'm new to soil growing, and this is as much a test of my skills as well as the lights. Now that I think about it, the only things in this grow that are NOT new to me are the water, the cal-mag, the Air Pots and one of the LED units! Be sure and check out SteveHman's LED Buyer's Guide, lots of great information!


Day 37
I hate killing the kids. Well, the boys. I'd originally planned to cull out a girl and guy, for a seed run, but honestly? I've never tasted either strain, so that's a big unknown. Also, with 5 clones and a newly planted PE bean in the 2'x2' tent, no room either. Then add the fact that I've got....oh, probably 15 strains or so right now to play with, not to mention the beans for the Iron Chef Challenge -- so there was no need to keep the males.

I'll take pictures tomorrow night, as planned, and also because I'll have four more girls to transplant into Air Pots! This also means another run to the local garden supply/nursery for more Dairy Doo based soil. I wonder how full of root mass the 2 gallon pots are going to get? I'll find out in about 8 weeks if I need to go to the 1 gallon Air Pots or even the tinier ones!

If you guys want, I'll post pics of the clones too, I topped them all in a close to UBT way, just gonna kick back and watch them go under 63w. I need to re-read some bonsai threads again, and start formulating a plan. How sick looking are some of the bonsai moms you see? Just incredible stuff, and if you use LEDs, I could see you having a dozen bonsai moms in a 2'x2' tent!

Mmmm, natural LEDs:

all in different exposures. I need bifocals and am too freaking poor to get them, so looking at that LCD screen is a pain in the arse.

White corrected is much better!

and for giggles, I tried flash...I'm failing to get that darned poinsettia effect

But I got them up here before MIDNGHT on SATURDAY, as promised!

Observations so far:

• SSH doesn't like my soil, techniques or environment. The UA crosses *love* it.
• Side A plants seem healthier and more robust than Side B
• Side A plants produced ⅝ (62.5%) females
• Side B plants have so far produced 2/8 (25%) females

I have tried, as best I can to treat both sides equally, and been rigorous in my techniques. As an example, here are shots of my current 5 clones under 63w in the 2'x2' tent:

Those look a wee odd, since they were tiny flowering cuts from the very base of the plants and I used no root stimulant or anything. I think they'll make good moms

I don't think it's my technique, maybe a case of strain? Onward we GO!
