Xlr8's Quest For The Best - 2012

im more scarred of what the fda approves!

As well you should be. FDA approves what they are paid to. For instance, my bottle of stevia extract has nowhere on it words to indicate that it is a sweetener. The assholes who make big money selling those pink, blue, and yellow packets of nasty artificial 'sweetener' can afford to hire FDA to run interference against this natural, benign, fairly effective and good tasting plant. Since chemical companies can't patent the plant to exploit a protected market, they buy suppression from their action unit, the FDA. This is similar to what DEA does for big Pharm to cut competition from cannabis. Citizen health & happiness is the LAST thing on their mind$.

FDA approval stamp should be skull & crossed bones.

As far as what the FDA approves, I have two words: ANAL SEEPAGE

J, I wasn't talking just of drugs, but about their hugely expensive Farm bill, with monstrous payments to large agribusinesses to plant corn. Excess fertilizer does seep down through the heartland's drainage to poison the gulf. Corn is cheap raw material for manufactured food, leading to obesity, heart disease, typeII diabetes, and humongous 'healthcare' costs for all americans. Don't tell me that we all have full choice about what we eat. In your neighborhood, do farmers bring their produce to market weekly to sell? Do you know anybody with time, knowledge, and desire to serve all their family's food from fresh? The deck is stacked, and not in our favor.

Here's a picture of the base of the plant that I discarded upon learning it was having a sexual identity crisis (most of the roots had been cut away first and the hydroton recycled). Gives a little bit of an idea of how I try to manipulate these into being bushier to contain them indoors - these are mostly sativa plants that would be enormous with out considerable training. Instead of a more traditional christmas tree shape, I top them and try to shape them more like a candelabra to bush them out a bit. Pretty stout branches in relation to the size of the trunk (for a sativa hybrid) and shortish veg period...:

I am actually blessed to be able to have a farmers market within a couple of blocks of me - though I'm sure most people don't have this handy benefit. Great points, and very discouraging reality we live in that regard. Not much that doesn't have corn in it in some form - ask anyone with an allergy to it - seems like everything uses corn based sweeteners or additives these days.

I think next year, I'm going to expand our outdoor garden and do most of the farming for us in the back yard... :)

Well, there is a downside to making your own crosses and working with genetics that are imperfect to begin with...

OG Kush is really special stuff - and a big part of that magic is the Chemdawg genetics in it. It's in any strain relating to OG Kush, and the Deadhead OG is one of these. Well, Chemdawg is both special and imperfect. The origins trace back to a bag of pot purchased at a Grateful Dead concert (hence names like Deadhead OG). The person who bought this bag at the Dead concert knew it was special, and was a grower/breeder himself, and worked to preserve the magic he found in that bag. Problem was, it had hermie tendencies that were never really able to be bred out completely. Still, OG Kush is the best of the best, and in my opinion every bit as good as it's reputation. Without getting longer winded, there is a risk of breeding or growing anything with Chemdawg in it - and that risk is further amplified when working with sativas/hazes, which are also much more prone to hermaphroditism as well.

Having said all that, one of my Deadhead Rippers has gone hermie on me. It's a risk I was well aware of, and was willing to take. The good news is the other Deadhead Ripper, and the OG Ripper both look fine, and I see no signs of hermaphroditism in them. I'll be pulling "Debbie" the offending Deadhead Ripper from the grow. She has nanners everywhere, seemingly overnight.

Am I upset? Not really, again - I was aware of this risk. Also, I have grown enough plants to know that the other plants often benefit enough from the new space gained to take up a lot of slack in the yield department. Not only that, since I only grow for me - I don't need a lot of yield. So... 'tsall good! :rip:

Here's one of the many male "nanners". Can you spot it? Hint, it's right smack in the middle of this photo:

On a brighter note: the OG Ripper is really looking beautiful. Also, the other Deadhead Ripper was definitely the nicer looking of the two Deadhead Rippers, and is as frosty at this stage as anything I've grown. I was not liking the one that went hermie much anyway, it wasn't nearly as frosty, and wasn't as nice of a looking plant overall. I'm relieved that the better looking of the two seems to be fine!

Onward and upward!

Hmmmm...

Too bad about the herme, but as you said, you knew it was a possibility.

Hopefully the others stay normal.

Very nice bro! needs to be up front!:high-five:

Speaking of onward and upward - a few new pics!

Deadhead Ripper - this one is all female baby!

I love how frosty she is... everywhere. Even the fan leaves are frosty!

OG Ripper - she is starting to develop nice spear shaped buds, a trait of OG Kush (not so much a trait of Jack the Ripper dad):

Jack the Ripper - my coco coir plant. JTR is almost pure haze, and really a late "bloomer". She tends to bulk up much later than most plants I've grown, and flowers in stages like many sativas... Not as big of buds as the others yet:

Yeah, bummer but oh well... Would have been nice if it didn't happen I suppose, but it simplifies some things too. Part of growing out 2 separate plants was that I wanted to pick the best of the two, and if it was good enough hang on to it. This event made that a little easier, especially since the other cross like it had nicer structure and more resin development anyway. I was making my own cross with 2 strains that had hermie potential, but special potential as well, so I knew it could happen. Not a biggy though, as the others are looking good and I'm glad the nicer looking/structured plant isn't showing signs of being a hermie.

The OG Ripper (cross I made between my OG Kush and a Jack the Ripper male) is really looking nice and smells like lemonade. I'm super excited about that one!

Might have been more fool-proof to work with seeds that have been proven out by a breeder, and I have plenty of those too, but not nearly as fun as my own unique crosses - even if a hermie pops up now and then! :)

Wow!!,:adore: i should be taking notes.. growing/journaling your a pro! Thanks for the pop in... I need to give this a good read, i just ordered the same juice. :peace:

Very nice bro! needs to be up front!:high-five:

Thanks a ton Greenhouse - I appreciate that a ton, and it's nice to have you here my friend!
The nutrients are great - I've been using them for a few grows now. I'm sure you'll have great success with them. Hope your weekend was a good one - thanks again! :thankyou:

hermie shmermie lol i had a time when all i had was hermie seeds to grow i got lots of great bud from those plants and very few hermies in the ofspring i think it was 2 out of like 50 beans, im facinated with breeding and discovering new phenos, i got lucky with my bubblecious seed and got the pheno that smells exactly like pink bubble gum!! and the cross im growing that i made "tt-kush" smells like that "ocean breeze" airfreshner its very odd it smells like something you might use to hide the cannabis smell! fun stuff!

Hi BID!

Agreed- hermies aren't all bad, and seeded bud is actually underrated IMO. Buds are smaller on seeded pants, but they seem stronger to me. I feel like seeded buds also taste better sometimes, but thats probably a personal preference thing. With all the seeds i have right now though, I have no use for the seeds hence no real interest in hermie seeds especially. No doubt hat would have been tasty bud however!

I wasn't desperate for the yield and was really mostly looking for one winner between the two of the Deadhead Rippers, anyway. The hermie already looked less resinous, and didn't have as nice of structure as the other anyway, so it was already losing the race - this made the decision that much easier in the end.

Pink bubble gum and ocean breeze?!?! YUM! :yummy:

Hey X!
Thanks for the confidence boost I needed to follow through with the heavy super cropping.
I did it last night and it went really well. Was scary at first, but once I got going, it was super fun. I can totally see now, how creative you could get with bud placements, and can't wait to experiment with this technique in future grows.
I threw some new photos up in my journal if you want to check em out.
Hope you're good!

 I sure hope that you are joking! :)

I actually did buy what they had listed. No worries, they listed 5 more pretty quick.

Yes, you are correct. Take a spreadsheet and make a feeding plan based on the application guide on the Blue Planet Nutrients website. Plan how many ML of each thing you need per week based on the size of reservoir you'd use. 40-50 gallons as an example.

Here's an outdated example of what I mean (sorry I don't have a more recent one handy at the moment):

bpn_nutrient_chart.jpg

Notice that I was able to calculate (middle of the spreadsheet) the approximate ML's of each thing I'd need for the grow. It's just a simple formula that adds up each item by week and totals it. Also, in the notes I have the amount of ML to a gallon. As you can see - in this example, I needed almost a full gallon of bloom for this grow. It's not a bad idea to make a plan like this for each grow and you'll be better prepared in all aspects, including how much of each thing you'll need.

I can't help you much on the taxes, etc., but I'm sure Corey could quote it for you (perhaps with some help from FedEx, etc.) once you get to that point of possibly ordering. :)

Damn, this is very helpfull !!!!!!!
Thank you xlr8 , never thought about this !! I never was such an organised person ... lol I need special lessons on this !!!
I will definitaly follow your advice my friend! Considering i will go with about the same size res, I don't have to alter the numbers, actually ...

I'm having another headache atm, if you can give me a hand a bit:

Im about to order flo n gro brain controler, 2 expansion kits, 2 3/4 ebb n flow fittings, but I just NOW saw that seller probably run out of MAXI JET 1000 pumps !!! (my f***ing bad luck !!) They only have either 1200 or 900 , model !!! lol
What do you advice me xlr ? Shall I go with the 900 , I see it doesn't make big diffrence , only 30-40 litters I think !
What do you think ?

Edit:
Also, on the first subject, I see you don't use calmag in your grow xlr8, why's that? You don't even need it at the first weeks ?

Fluffy hugs rock - thanks Fluffster! Right back atcha ---

I was really inspired by the story you shared and everything you've been through with your arm to this point. You are a really cool person and someone who really does inspire me with your approach to life and it's many various challenges.

Gulp...bless ya, I have been regretting it thinking it is just a self centred wimpy whinge.

Thank you my friend, thank you.

Xlr8, I agree it is going to be a challenge to stop eating them lovely cheese burgers and all the other stuff we have come to enjoy.

I'm with you on expanding our growing area for veggies and stuff outside. We just put in 4 4' x 8' rasied garden beds and another one that is about 2' x 60' for berries. Should keep me fairly busy next year.

Hi Billy -

So glad the chart as helpful, it's not completely accurate to what i do anymore, but the idea is the same. Corey may have different recommendations now too, so I'm going by that now. Please only use this as a template and replace my numbers with his current recommendations...

Actually, I'm using maxi jet 1200's. Those are the ones I'd do. I think Titan uses 1000 pumps, but I'm pretty sure they actually recommended I do 1200's so that's what i went with. I think I was able to get the pumps pretty reasonably at an aquarium supply store.

You shouldn't need ebb n flow fittings for a Flo N Grow set-up - i do use them for my other DIY veg system though (maybe you are thinking something similar?) Or, do you mean connection fittings?

For a partial DIY Flo N Gro like mine you need:

  • Oceanus controller
  • 6 pot expansion kit
  • 2 Maxijet 1200's (or 1000's) 900s might work okay too
  • Reservoir (i use rubbermaid trash bin)
  • 1/2" Fittings for reservoir
  • 1/2" tubing to connect reservoir to controller/pumps). Length depends on distance between reservoir and Oceanus control bucket
  • A little extra 3/4 " tubing might be handy, but I don't remember if it's necessary.

I think thats about it... There should be more details in my Flo N Gro review thread.

I do use cal/mag currently about 4ml per gallon - I use RO water and it seems to keep calcium deficiencies from sneaking up on me. Not all strains seem to need it, but they all seem to be happy with it.

Oh my.. Xlr8, those plants are just beautiful

:thanks: my dear!

I am very pleased so far - definitely happy with how they're growing and developing. The Deadhead Ripper might be the frostiest, most resinous plant I've grown so far. It really does look sugar-coated, almost top to bottom. :yahoo:
