Woodsman's Northern Light #5 Grow

woodsman that's what happened with me..lackluster performance from my first grows. I didn't check ph either (am now though), I was growing too many plants under too large an area for a 400 watt hps.. I let them veg too long. I let them get too dry between feedings and had a few spells which were near drought. I over fed nutes. I blame them for going hermie but it may have been me stressing them out. maybe if they are heavily seeded the bud won't be very potent? not sure. I cut them after there 12 hrs. of light instead of correctly waiting til the end of darkness, just before lights should come on. My humidity was WAY Too low for most of the grow.
anyway, didn't mean to ramble. i just got to thinking that when we're new, there's so many possibilities as to why our pot sucks that I can't even venture to guess. All I know is it looked GREAT, smoked great, tasted great...it did everything but stone great! it was just bagseed and now I've got some white widow so many this next time it'll be better. any idea when your next will begin?

A lot of what happened to your grow could have been avoided so those are easy things to remedy. Now if the seeds were not good from the beginning, then I guess there is not a whole lot we could have done.. That 'may' have been the case with mine along with like you said, not checking pH (like you, I have a meter now) and nute issues. I hope that the low humidity is not the cause of lower potency! I do mist them very frequently now (in veg) so perhaps that is a mute issue as they are getting moisture manually rather than through humid air. If you had a seeded plant though, that could be the main reason of your lower potency, I did not have that problem. The NL#5 seeds that I'm growing now are the seeds that I purchased and I would presume are good seeds. My last grow was done with the 'free' seeds that came with this NL#5. They may have had an expired shelf life issue and that's why they are given away. I wonder?

You asked 'when will my next grow begin'? I will grow outdoors (like I always do) starting in late April or early May (depends on the weather). We sometimes get cold weather into late April here! If this NL grow turns out exceptional then I will regenerate them and move them outside. That would be great, since I would not have to wonder about the sex. Timing wise should be perfect. I would end up with some 'huge' plants We have some huge pots laying around that you could grow a tree in. We'll see.

Thanks for the post and when is your White Widow grow scheduled for?

hey woodsman thought i would stop by and say thanks for being my friend.couple of questions -how do i subscribe to a journal, enjoy yours, looks like you get the most out of the least.i had'nt had any smoke for a while but it looks like mabe in a couple of months i'll remedy that.i have the big"c" and a double by pass, but im still kicking-lol,doing pretty gud for an old fart.im enjoying ur journal, and quite a few more your grow is looking mighty gud, thanks for the help

How's it going HH? I too had the big C about 4 years ago this May. but mine was quintuple. Other than a little arthritus in the sternum it was easier than some knee operations I've heard of. You just gotta lose any extra pounds, eat right and take your meds. Patience is a big key also. I find it easy to be patient with other people but not so much with myself. I was treating myself like a creek jumping Rambler but I'm over that now. Glad to meet a fellow zipper survivor!

All you have to do to subscibe is post a message in the thread. Anything new comes up on the thread and it comes up on your user cp.

Peace! Always Peace!

hey hypo hippo click on thread tools near the top right and hit subscribe or unsubscribe... hey wood lookin at ur pics a few pages back, looking great! nice big fat leaves! you were talking about LST i suggest supercropping, just bend the top branch over just below the lower outer branches. saves the upper and brings the lowers up to the uppers level. good to see your progress! looks like it will be a good journey!

Hey Hypo or as MostlyCrazy calls you below, HH, we all end up with shorter names eventually Like MC for instance, Not sure If I have one, Woods or Woody (huh). I try to get the 'most out of the least' as I really don't have a choice. The wife and I are on an extremely tight budget!

Glad to hear your doing alright after your surgeries

As far as subscribing, MC has one way below. Every time I post on someones thread, I'm automatically 'subscribed'. I get an 'email' on my computer every time someone makes a post on any of the threads I'm 'subscribed' to. Check out your 'User CP' (control page) at the top left of every page. That will get you to your home page or control page, from there you can do quite a bit as far as your own personal needs. Believe me, when I started here I also was lost! Check out the tutorials like: 'Reputation' for instance to learn about getting and receiving 'Reps' You can see how many you have on your CP. Whew!

I think that's what I was planning to do ,but LOL I didn't know it's called 'supercropping'! I'm so far behind when it comes to all the 'terminology' to describe the different techniques. Very funny! I always thought that supercropping is when you top the plants several a few times. LOL

Whew,
I just finished reading your journal, so now i'm exhausted !! On the fish emulsion, I use the Neptune Harvest fish emulsion on my tomatoes and garden vegs., and there's no or very little smell. How long you gonna let them babys veg. for ?? Have you ever used coat hangers to lst. ?? I find it much easier than string. I've heard about the technic that your getting ready to use (pinching the stems and laying them down) and That's known to be a real good way, to lst.. I will be watching with interest when you decide to do it. I accidently, partially broke a limb off on my last grow, and that branch had the largest bud on the plant. Maybe i'll have the balls to do it after watching you. You're doing a great job, for what you got to work with. And if you don't mind, i will hang around till the end ?? My ballast blew, and i'm trying to decide if i want another hid, or move to cfls, you cfl guys are really impressing me. And my wife smokes more than i do, and she's still a b---- !! Just no sence of humor sometimes !! She was all mushy today, for valentines day, ok, but that leaves 364 !! We love each other though !! How much longer before you pinch the stalks ?? I don't want to miss it !! And i wanted to ask you about the northern light #5. I just acquired some northern light seeds, but he did'nt say anything about #5. He grew these last summer and i can tell you it was potient stuff. I think he said it came out of canada ?? Right now this white widow is kicking my ass !! Ha !! ::nicethread::bong:

super cropping is when you pinch stems until you feel and hear a crack then bend the plant over at that point. The technique works well but the cracking of the stems is stressful and the plant will shunt some energy away from growth and into repair of the places where you pinch and bend. Usually it only takes 2-5 days for the pinch to repair and then energy is no longer shunted for that function.

Hey Superweed, nice to see you here! Did you get your seeds from a seed bank or from a bag of the smoke? If it's from a seed bank you could recheck their website or you could email them. I had to email mine to find out which NL I had!

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly (your Italian accent even comes through in your writing-but your English is very good!) Did you mean that you harvested in 4/5 months or that after 4/5 months of CURE/DRY it was better? I figure that was an outside grow judging by that 2 meter height!
All I hear is that NL#5 is terrific.. I cannot wait!

Our seeds, i don't remember. And no, indoor grow for us ;).
The weed is still wonderful after 1 month of cure/dry, but i rememer a pleasant changment after 4/5 months -------> Wonderful high, and improved taste.RoorRip
The NL i have now, are for sure NLx5haze by GreenHouse, The start wasn't to good for the reasons of bad light i was explain to you in other 3d.
Fortunately we started early, so we have time to recover them.
Maybe i will open a journal, anyway i will update you and stay in touch to help each.
I can't wait too, it's so much time i haven't nothing good.
Now this months are really long for me.
Support me.

Sorry had to break away to watch a movie with my wife.

After reading your post I had to go and do some studying. I found this here on 420: Supercropping - a tutorial
I always thought that 'supercropping' was when you topped the plants many times! Embarrassing!!!

So I guess I'm doing some LST right now and later I will be doing some 'bending'. I guess I wasn't so far off! LOL. HK, instead of bending the 'tops' I will try to bend lower down so that a majority of the plant will be bend. Do you think that's possible or do you think that I'm taking a chance of snapping the main stem and doing terminal damage?

I do it all the time and it gets you more buds.

Have you ever done it lower on the plant or only towards the top?

Slowpuffer (great name) welcome to the thread and very glad to have you!

I had only used the fish Emulsion outdoors and as long as you don't stick your nose into the bottle (whew). I never really noticed the smell. Indoors that is another story!

As far as bending, wish me luck because it seems like after reading about bending in the link above, mostly it's done higher up on the plant (I think).. lower down I'm wondering if it will crack rather than bend. I'll investigate this more. I could always just tie the top over (bow it over) instead of pinching it. We'll see. Any one out there is more than willing to advise me on this.

I've never used coat hangers for LST just string and thumbtacks . I've never grown with 'just CFL's', I have a 100w MH and a 100w HPS located over the center of the grow. The CFL's are to either side to supplement my inadequate HID. There are many here that are using CFL's exclusively and they seem to do very well!

I take it that the NL seeds were acquired through a friend rather than a seed bank. No way of knowing then, I guess. If they are from a seed band You can email them for the answer as I did.

Glad to have you on board, pipe in whenever you like!

Hey HTL, I feel real old and out of touch sometimes here when it comes to Cannabis Terminology. That why I went 'back to school' so to say and read that link that I posted above. Here is the opening paragraph as weritten by Medical Marijuana:

"Supercropping is a term given to a group of techniques that, when used in conjunction, will produce greatly improved yields over untreated plants. Various methods can be used when supercropping, and they are outlined below.
You can use one or all methods of supercropping, modified to your individual needs. The end result is an increased yield.
"

As I mentioned above I'm wary of doing damage if I bend the plant too low down on the main stem. What do you think? In the past I have inadvertently bent my main stem and always had it recover well. I've used duct tape at the point of 'near breakage' with great success! Just never close to the bottom, say 1/3rd the way up.
Our seeds, i don't remember. And no, indoor grow for us ;).

Hey Superweed welcome back, Thanks for the smoke report on the NL. I hope you will do a grow journal. It will make it easier for you to get assistance ar advise. Through pics people will better be able to assist you. I know what it's like not having stuff around. I always stash my roaches for a rainy day!

We are all here to support you!

I usually aim to get my canopy even. I usually do it on the top 1/3 of the plant but that is not saying that it can't be done before. I've seen some growers try to grow them almost flat.

Originally my plan was to bend down lower, but as the plant ages the lower stem will become more wood-like and could just snap! Thoughts? I may have to do it up higher. Just didn't want to waste the lower part of the plant with weak light penetration.

I've done them down to about half way but in veg they are still pliable down to at least that level. When you squeeze it you'll know right away if its pliable. If you have to get the vise grip out to crush it, don't! LOL! I also supercrop a plant more than once it it heads off in an unexpected direction or I screwed up my planning.
