Who Let The Dogs Out? Chem Comparison Grow!

Quick question before I forget ...

Is a 3 gallon pot big enough for a single plant coco grow? Or should I use a 5 gallon pot for a single plant coco grow?

I'm asking because I tried a 3 gallon pot for a single plant soil "12-12 from seed" grow ... and I'm not impressed with the yield so far.

Thanks in advance ... and have a nice night ...

That really depends on your goals and your available space. In my tent if I were to do 1 plant, I’d probably want a 7 or a 10 gallon pot. My canopy space is something like 17.78 cuft. To grow 1 plant with that much foliage I’d think 10 gallon fabric pot would be necessary. But as I said, that’s because I know my available space and my goal would be to fill that space with the one plant.

you’re probably not impressed with the yield because of the absence of veg time. It doesn’t matter what system you use, 12/12 from seed is always going to be your lowest yielding plant.

Personally, I like my 3-gallon coco set-ups. Four of them in my old 2x4 tent was a nice fit - not a lot of wasted space, but still room to move them around without it being claustrophobic. In my new 4x4 flower tent, four 3-gallons is too small I am finding. Next time will do four 5-gallon fabric pots with coco. I agree with you, Cheffy, it depends on space, as well as veg-plans.

It’s also good to know the strain you’re working with. I think Beez mentioned earlier than his DDa did much better in a 4 gallon pot than a 3 gallon. Some strains might not be worth it to run in only 3 gallons of coco.

also I want to post up some pics of my chem plants
Here are my cookies n chem this week. I’ve got a new camera coming. So next weeks photos should be a lot better quality. :cheesygrinsmiley:

The family shot I took yesterday. I’d like to just point out that the shadow you see in the corner with fruitflower is only because I turned off the blurple for picture taking. Normally that corner is illuminated with the blurple panel.

Everything coming along great, first round of pistils are starting to brown off and I’m quite happy with their thickness at this point.

You grow some damn nice looking plants @ChefDGreen Very nice job!

You think I got a POTM candidate in there guys?

thanks for the kind words Beez! I’m really hoping they get frostier in the next week or two. That’s when my last crop really increased in trichome density

also on the size of your containers, consider the running time of the plant. I will never again try to run a 14 week bloom plant in a 3 gallon container... the sudden death at the end because the soil failed was heartbreaking.
I’ve been thinking about this for a couple weeks now. I love the 3 gallon fabric for my space but I’d definitely cut the veg back to 4-5 weeks total.

@ChefDGreen when you get your new camera take that first plant out of the tent, put her in front of a very dark background with nice lighting and snap a dozen or so photos. As a rule photos taken from down low aiming upward seem to show off the plant better. I think too when the photos are taken as the plant is being harvested and most of the fan leaves are trimmed off that makes the colas pop.

HOWEVER I will be the first to admit I take horrible photos of plants. I think I take better pictures with my phone then I do with my camera.

I’ll definitely be taking a lot of pictures! I’ll keep that in mind when I go to take photos on harvest day. I’ll take a lot of the big leaves to get that cola pop.

Lookin really nice there @SQl2kGuy !!

I wanna show everyone what I’m lookin at today.

My colas are really starting up niiiice.
I’ve nearly got the canopy under control. My snips are sticky all over :cheesygrinsmiley:

I am seeing a similar looking Autokush..

right next to my chem#4. The chem had a weird start with crazy undergrowth. After snipping away the undergrowth, the plant is able to start a renewed healthy, spread!

I bought those seeds local and only two survived ... I was careless with the others :(

At this point though, I wish I had gotten Chem Dog #4 from Dr. Seeds like I had originally planned ...

I bought the chem#4 from Dr Seeds, and out of 4 tries only one worked (sort of). I messed up the transplant into rockwool but after shaving the wild clump of undergrowth, the top can finally spread out. 5 weeks old. Maybe you can tell it's not tall as most 5 week old chem4's...

Happy Hump-day, everyone.

The four plants in my third grow are doing well. Today is DAY 44 since germination. I did a full update in my journal a day or two ago, but here is how the chem-siblings are looking. I had everyone out of the tent today for a bit more quad-line training.

I am currently thinking that I will let them veg for 50-60 days total, so another week or so. Probably one more round of tying to keep them horizontal, and then I'll let them start going upward. I have done hardly any defol up to this time, more leaf tucking than anything. Might do a little more just before the flip.

About 6 months ago I adopted the practice of not removing any leaves until the plant had finished it's stretch. My theory is that more leaves equals more growing ability, more food production/storage and overall healthier plants. What I am noticing is more branches making it to the top of the canopy, or at least close enough to produce nice nuggets. The branches are also a bit thicker enabling many to stand without assistance towards the end of flowering. That won't be the case with every strain of course.

Once the plants finish flowering I do a good lollipop trim because I detest larfy buds. At that time I remove some old fan leaves too but make sure to leave plenty to absorb the light.

Good evening everyone! Hope all is well. Just throwing in a picture of my Chemdog Autos. Its a group picture!

These girls are 36.31 days from seed.

Have a groovy evening.

Thanks for that ... I am going to mainline the plant in the 3 gallon coco with 8 colas so it should be quite small.

I agree that the "12/12 from seed" and autoflowers will perform poorly because of veg time ... lesson learned.

I hope the SOG doesn't perform too poorly ...

I'm trying a bunch of things and maybe when I come full-circle ... I will realize that one big plant may be the best yielder :)

That’s really bizarre warez it’s like the plant stopped upward growth and focused on only side growth. This makes me think either your lighting is too blue or something is off with your nute ratio. Does your blurple have a flower switch you can turn on??

Really nice Bardy! Both your chem gals are just a ball of tops. Feels like those secondary shoots really exploded this week.

sog is a better yield on a yearly basis especially if you’re doing it 12/12 from seed. That method makes sense because you’re replacing a longer veg time with a higher plant count. But 12/12 from seed sog is probably best done with 1 or 2 gal pots. Unless of course you’re running a long flowering strain like Emilya was talking about

I saw a video last year that was a huge learning boost for me. Until I saw the video I topped every single plant at the 5th node. Now I top like in the video.

The video is by Chef Derek Butt and he knows his stuff.

Hey @warezaholic ... welcome back!

I am sure your plant will spring into action soon!

2 days ago, I took it upon myself to just trim off all the small growth under the canopy (basically, shaved her leg) including the giant size fan leaves. This seems to have helped it a great deal! Now it springing up with vigor.

Before:

Immediately after:

Two days later (now): it is progressing and may rebound!
