WheelOFortune's - first turn

also,

you had water cooling and now you dont??? wha??
why not use it in the volks???? they could touch the glass housing and not care right? 1k hps, water cooled, co2 added, whew! what a setup.

update:
today i bought fox farms trio of supplements. those will go on top of fox farms big bloom. its late so this week i used 1/4teaspoon/gal of open seseme AND equal part beastie bloom. i think i will do beastie bloom only next res change. cha ching later to finish. i may add molassas to aid size. was worried about putting it through the pump, but maxx said he does it and hasn't complained yet.

I also bought a ph meter and tds meter. i was borrowing one/using ph solution up until now. will be nice to monitor the res more closely.

There is a lot of crap that goes along with water-cooling that is not needed with air-cooling, like water/water heat exchanger, water/air exchanger, lots of plumbing. Plus I had the first ones on the market and they were for the large 1,000 watt bulbs, so they were huge and not too well designed. 13 bolts if I remember, a bunch of O-rings, a bunch of plastic parts, a fabricator that would not stand by his product defects, in other words and effin nightmare.

Even the new ones are only good till something stops the cooling then it turns bad quickly. Not something most growers should have IMO.

Cheers,
Maxx

i see what you mean!

i was thinking of fooling around with water cooling, im not really afraid of putting the electricity near water, i know what im doing. but money was an issue after i just smacked down 3 grand on more important equipment, and i decided to hold off. to make it work well, id need to buy the reflector (sol fresca) like $400, plus tubing $100 max, two 55 gallon barrels for heat exchange $150, two submersible pumps $100, plus maybe an aquarium water chiller for 2-3 hundred.

plus after i saw how cool the air cooling was , i changed my mind. I only have 600 watts and i have an 8" can fan rated at 745cfm. I can put my tongue on the part of the glass housing thats closest to the bulb for as long as i want. (not that i tried. . .) lol. the can fan is kinda loud though, so right now im just running an house register assist fan. also 8" but only rated at 500cfm, and i doubt if it even does that. but its quiet as a mouse and does the job well, at least now when its spring time.

I still have some pretty cool heat exchangers around the ranch. I even fabed my own units that work with 600s, but if anything goes wrong it's a f**king mess guaranteed. Though I was thinking about dusting them off for this summer. When they are all working well and you have all the bits in place there is nothing quite like them. Water and electricity is how you get to have Tea and Coffee, and a hot shower etc. One time a bulb broke inside of the water jacket, and the bulb filled with water but just kept on working. I thought that I was going to have an industrial accident as I happened to be in the room when it happened. I was taking cover and watching it with a mirror from behind a door, but no drama.

Maxx,
Im having a problem, and im getting nervous that i better figure out what my problem is before it gets worse!!

i hope you can help.

im starting to get yellowing (more of a really light green) in my leaves, its not bad yet but its been getting worse for the past couple of days.a couple look a little burnt at the tips, but thats less apparent at this point. on the worse ones, green fades away as you get farther away from the veins. some plants show very little of this.

Im thinking it looks like nutrient deficiency, but my res is right on. 6.2ph, 1280ppm. so that cant be it.
nute def. hmm, salt builbup in the rockwool? ive opnly had them in there for 2 weeks and im on my second res fill. the first week was weaker nutes. so that sounds unlikely.

is my rockwool getting too dry? I am feeding them once a day for an hour and a half (2 rotations).when i squeeze a cube in the morning before their daily watering, no water comes out, and it feels airy, but my fingers feel slightly moist. is this to dry?

i read some flood and drain posts and some people say flood your rockwool every 4 hours. this seems like too much to me. they need air to breathe?

any other ideas??? or comment on my idea?

please help. I'm still a rockwool newb.
maxx?? anyone else??

thanks

If you think the RW is getting too dry then try adding another watering, wont hurt unless you have water dripping inside the wheel. Have you looked for fungus gnats? Little buggers are hard to see and they suck life out from the roots. Is it happening uniformly on the plant?

Maxx

the problem is, i'm not sure what too dry is?
ill add another watering halfway through the light cycle.
i haven't seen any fungus nats. . . dark cycle now, I'll look in the morning with a magnifying glass.
i haven't had many bug problems in the past, except some spider mites a couple of years ago or so. o yeah and some white flies, pesky litlle annoying bastards.

also its about 75-78 in the light and 60ish in the night.

The weight difference from wet to dry in a RW cube is pretty dramatic, the dry one weighs almost nothing and one that has just been watered weighs about 6 ounces. When you have fungus gnats you will see flies in the res usually.

Uncouple a cube from the system just enough to feel the weight of it. A dry cube will blow away in a breeze. I dont think the RW is the problem.

Cheers,
Maxx

i spent an hour poking around the res and didn't see anything living.
i'll look closer tomorrow.
and i put it on two feedings, so we'll see what that does.

ill try to get a pic posted tomorrow so you can see the discoloration of the leaves.

maxx,

whats the risk of over watering?
would i risk starving them of oxygen if i watered every 4 hours 24/7 like the ebb n flow thread i read? should i not water them at night?

WoF, just wondering, should I also use tor when posting, is it that big of an issue to cover up identity?

I dont think there is an oxygen issue, though I would not water more then twice a day, three times tops. The rotation I believe is a bit like a tide and that is likely creating more oxygen for the roots. The RW is only going to accept a certain amount of water and unless your RW is sitting in water I dont think you will have a problem with 'over watering'.

thanks maxx. ill try 2 out for a while. i got a better timer at homedepot today.

james, i don't know, im really not an expert at computer security. who knows what the government can or can't do. i say better safe than sorry, but nothing is fool proof. i know my way around computers though, so its not hard for me to find out how to do something. tor is simple and linux has strong security if you know how to use it. . . its slow but powerful. google it.

i say plan for the worst hope for the best.

just be like me and don't break any laws or step on any toes.

ok, here are some pics of the yellowing.

here is my res, i looked for a 1/2 hour with a magnifying glass, i can't find any fungus gnats. dont see them in the RW either. my res does smell a tiny bit stale. don't know whats up with that.
