West Coast Diesel: First Grow Journal - Would Love Some Insight

Hey fellow 420ers havent really had the time to be active so im sorry have that works been crazy.

Plants have been doing pretty well. The FFOF west coast and peanutbutter haze have been doing pretty well considering they havent been fed in a week or so.

I have found that the 2 other plants that ive used different peat moss based potting soil have become very tight and have a hard time pushing my finger down to test moisture. They both are getting decently boxed out so there are alot of roots around the edges of the pots.

Has anyone have any knowledge on Hydrophobic soil. I am worried that the potting soil might have gone bad which is making them stay sad and drooping. Will post some photos tonight for some context.

If your pots feel solid they're probably rootbound rather than soil that's hyrdophobic. Hydrophobic soil will have water that pools on top or runs off the sides rather than getting absorbed.

Two things to do for a rootbound plant are: 1. water slowly to runoff (and probably every day outside). It may take 5 to 10 minutes to get it done but you want to know that it's saturated top to bottom, and 2. root coring, described by @Derbybud here.

It's really as simple as pushing a barbecue skewer into the soil at different points and angles, without going all the way to the very bottom of the pot.

As an aside, if you do end up with hydrophobic soil at some point, folks will mix yucca powder (a tiny amount goes a long way) or aloe vera juice, both of which are surfactants and will slow down the water's movement through the soil.

Hi New, either ways Shed mentioned work well. Looking good! Feed dem ladies man! They'll be there for you later. :high-five:
Yea stone it really doesnt help that i havent had time to get to my local hydro shop been about a week and a haft since they got anymore greenrush grow. I get a really good discount so i was trying to wait and go in person but im just gonna eat the extra cost and order online aint worth the 20-30 bucks if they die on me or get stunted

Beast mode! 💪 I think I'm watching four outdoor grows and they all would have split my tent apart 😂 looking forward to that flower! 👌

Thanks green appericate it the two sad ones are prob about 4.5-5 feet other 2 are closing on 6 feet if not already there

Crazy to think the smaller ones are already root bound but makes sense cuz with that bm1/compost mixture i dont think i used as much soil at least 60-80 litres short compared to the FFOF in the other 65 gallon

Grab barbecue skewers or thin dowels and see how much resistance you get as you push them down. Also, it looks dry around the base of the plant in the last one, so make sure you're watering edge to edge and top to bottom. And feed those plants!
Sounds good shed will do after work today👍 Would you recommend putting multiple holes with the bbq skewers around the plant right?

And more green rush has been ordered should be in by end of day today or my tomorrow morning eta. Felt so bad i havent been able to feed them past two weeks😓

Multiple holes to multiple depths at multiple angles. Just make sure not to go all the way to the bottom of the pot or the water will run right through.
Yup sounds good there about 18 inches tall anyways so i dont think il get to the bottom but thanks again shed never fail to give great advice to myself and keith 👌!!!!

Update with the bbq skewers they only went down about 7-8 inches with a good amount of force didnt wanna push harder than that.

As for feeding i have fed them 8L twice of 4 of times today with green rush grow feeding them slower to see if the water retains more than all 24L at once

Morning fellow 420ers hope everyone had a good weekend woke up to a chilly Monday morning.

Got all the plants back on their feeding of green rush. Fed them 8l every hour for 3 hours with a total of 24l of greenrush yesterday.

Woke up to a slight cold front with temp being 13C and west coast diesels are still drooping this morning after being fed yesterday afternoon/ evening. Hopefully by the afternoon they have started to perk back up.

One of the west coasts has went into flower yesterday no waiting for the others and will start feeding bloom.

24 liters is a bit over 6 gallons, which doesn't seem like it would completely saturate either a 65 or 100 gallon pot. Using my 10 gallon pots as a reference though, they would take 2 gallons in flower or 20% of the pot volume. That would make a 65 gallon pot take 13 gallons and a 100 gallon pot take 20 gallons.

Can't say I've ever had to water anything that big though so I'm just extrapolating!

hey shed hope your having a good day.

The 24L is for the 65 gallons, for the 100 gallon im doing roughly 40-45L.

I understand what your saying about the it not completely saturating the pots with 24L. Earlier in the year watering them 5 gallons i could feel moisture at the bottom of the fabric pots even now the 24L i find the pots is still dry.

I am just concerned with over watering them.

My other question regarding if i start watering the 65 gallons 13 gallons i would need to match each feeding of nutrients at 13 gallons so i wouldnt flush all the nutrients out when i go to water again right?

If the roots have filled the pot then I can't see a way to over water cloth pots outside.

I'm not sure I understand the question since I'm not sure how your nutes work. Are they only used every other time or some other recommended interval?

Ok so im gonna just soak them if they still seem droopy and dry.

As for the nutes it’s recommended every other watering would be fed with my nutes. So i was wondering if i started watering them 13 gallons each watering, i would have to feed them 13 gallons of water mixed with the of nutes the next watering?
