Weffalo's West Coast O.G. First Time Grow: Indoor, Soil, SIP, Auto

Wow thanks Bill sorry lot's of quotes for you to deal with there lol, thank you very much for the reply.

I hope the new grow room is coming along nicely mate.

I'm glad to hear I can transplant without issues. I think I am going to stick with SIP because that's the title of this journal and I'm definitely curious to see what kinda success I can get as a first time grower.

The Bill284 method has been used for the seedlings (At least in part, the pots are layered like you showed) and despite me not realising the difference between coco and soil and bottom feeding them for 10 days, they seem to be doing really well.

Perhaps for my next grow I can fully utilise your method and use coco, I'll certainly have enough of it left over lol :D

I'll keep an eye out for further nodes I was just wondering if there was a general time they usually appear so I can prepare in advance and waste no time getting them into the 5gals as prep will take about 48 hours.

Be well and thanks for checking in <3
Prep the soil ahead of time so you are ready. :thumb:
I think once you get them into the sips it will work better and be easier to maintain.
Just getting there is a bit of work.
And the watering will take some practice.
But the results seem to be worth the extra effort at first.
Easy watering and huge girls .
Can't beat that.
Take care.

Your right mate, easy watering and huge girls sounds like the dream I hope it plays out like that :blunt:

Thanks as always, take it easy Bill!

Kinda hard to see but the 2nd pic down, that plant is leaning heavillyy, I think after the soak yesterday as I don't remember seeing it tipping that much before. Hoping it straightens out on it's own but if anyone has any advice please let me know <3

A popsicle stick or something to tie it too for now.
When you uppot you can put them deeper for support.
Anything just to keep her up is fine.
Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving.
Take care.

Thanks as always Bill, I just wasn't sure if the leaning was indicative of watering too much or little or it's fairly normal?

We don't celebrate thanksgiving here but thank you and all the best to you and yours, I hope you have a lovely day.

I'll try find something to support her with :)

Think your shop is cheapest @DeeBeeBee, 46p shop? - My pound shop was more like a £3 shop and unfortunately it's closed down. I've ordered some bamboo sticks for tomorrow so should be okay :D

I don't see a lot of lean. Unless they're really falling over I tend to let them be as some movement helps strengthen the stem.

Yeah I didn't take such a good picture of it but it's maybe 35-40 degree lean?

I found some cocktail skewers in the back of a drawer and leaned it against one of those for now but good to know for future about stregnthening the stem. I'm already thinking about doing some photos next and maybe moving these to a 2nd tent so i can start vegging them asap xD

Did a bit of research and this strain apparently prefers lower temps of only 17-21c with 26c being the max, now I'm moving into veg I'm going to lower the temps to around 21 and rH down to 60%. Think the heater will only really be needed at night time which will be good for the energy bills :D

Really rate the Fast Buds website, comprehensive info on the strain with a big FAQ section!

Got a bit of an issue with the difference in US measurements lol.

GroBucket is 25.4cm width and the "5 Gal Buckets" I have are 25 litre and too wide, I;m finding it very hard to find a bucket with the correct diameter and I think it's important it fits snug in the bottom?

My pots are 20 Liters and they are about 30 cm diameter, so quite similar size wise. I will also be growing autos. What size reservoirs would you use for these pots, and what sort of container would you use, given that they are cloth pots? I used LOS in my last grow.

I'm using GroBuckets which are prebuilt. The measurements are ‎25.4 x 25.4 x 17.8cm and that is basically how big the res is gonna be, I'm not sure how often that will need refilling but they are designed for 5gal buckets so guessing that size is good for you too :)

I should have built my own because finding an appropriate bucket is challenging lol, I'm not even sure it matters I might be stressing about nothing I'll wait for Azi to weigh in lol. He can answer your question better too I'm sure!

Not necessary to fit snug on the bottom. The more important piece is putting the side opening flush with the bucket to keep the majority of soil out of the reservoir but not the end of the world is some gets in. What you are trying to really prevent is for roots to clog the overflow hole.

Can you put the bucket insert into the bucket off center so the overflow section is flush with the bucket?

The reservoirs in the inserts is about 1G/4L.

But you're planning on cloth pots, correct? If so, you need a different design, more like what Emilya and Reservoir Dog use in theirs. I gave a design in the #SIP Clib thread on page two that you can scale down to your 2Gal pots using a dishwashing tub rather than a big storage tote. But, same exact concept.

The inserts Weff is using are for solid 5 gallon buckets which are required to hold the water. If you just put one in a cloth pot the water will just drain out (obviously).

Ok thanks for the info Azi, yeah I think that's possible to put the opening flush just by having it flush on one side and then a 3cm gap on the other at the bottom.

The only other issue is that the pipe/water level doesn't actually come up to the top of the bucket so I couldn't fill it completely... not such a big deal.

What I'll do is try and find slightly smaller ones and if no joy... no big deal. Depending on what my plan ends up being with the next grow I might convert the buckets I already have into DIY ones as they would support a bigger res :)

Thanks as always <3

I'm not following you there. The max water level should be well below the top of the bucket. In fact it should only be the bottom few inches. And the fill tube should go from the reservoir, through your grow mix and stick up a bit to make pouring water into the tube easy.

You never want to saturate the entire pot, but just the very bottom few inches.
