Weffalo's West Coast O.G. First Time Grow: Indoor, Soil, SIP, Auto

As it is now, you could move your stakes so you are training to the nearest pot edge, then follow the pot edge around, training any branches that come toward the middle and removing the ones that go outside the edge if space is an issue.

Okay thanks mate I'll give it a try, don't really need to remove them I don't think as space isn't a problem? It's just that they might cover the watering hole lol. I'll try training the main branch away a bit and the other branches towards the middle if possible. If it covers the hole I'm sure it just means I need t gentle lift the leaves before watering lol.

Am I right in thinking with my (very limited experience) that they love the path of least resistance - but conversely to us that sometimes meaning giving them resistance to follow where you want them to go?!

Does that make sense? Like you think “I’m pushing this plant this way” but the plant is like “I want an easy life, I guess I’ll just do what is suggested” I’ve found them just amazingly forgiving - they go where you show

Early on, the new growth is very supple and will generally grow in the direction the bud is heading before it breaks out. That's why you can shape a plant with careful pruning by cutting just above a bud already facing the direction you want the new growth to head in. You could just manipulate it before the branch hardens but it's easier to start off in the right direction.

But, if you wait too long, the branch tissue will harden and any bending you do then increases the chance of breakage.

They also grow toward brighter light, so there are many ways of manipulating growth for our purposes.

First casualty 😭

The biggest/best girl has had a branch snap that I didn't notice, unfortunately fell off completely as I was examing. Good lesson to be more careful with the lst, think the branch was too young.

The res has finally mostly emptied so first refill today, hopefully the injured lady recovers okay.

Getting harder to train them/know what to do but for now it doesn't seem like much needs doing, more like a once every 2 days affair. Res has gone down quicker but not empty again yet, waiting for that to time the refill interval.

The reservoir level doesn't matter a whole lot as long as there's enough for on demand drinking. The water level will affect the moisture gradient somewhat but I don't know how much that really matters. And you don't have to have it go low in between fillings.

The other extreme is to top off the reservoir each day and note how a much you added before it comes out the overflow.

I do it both ways depending on whether I'm going to change a feeding .

Okay cool mate, I think it's another week or so before I'm in flower and need to change the nutes so I can definitely test out the other method. Is there any sure fire way of knowing when I'm in flower vs pre-flower? The pistils are getting pretty big already I'll try get closer pics tomorrow when lights are back on.

You'll start getting little clusters or puff balls of pistils rather than random ones here and there. A bit subjective though.
Gotya, I'll keep an eye out and no doubt ask here when I think it's looking likely.

Time definitely flies doesn't feel all that long ago they were just baby seedlings... feeling like a proud parent :')

Removed training carhooks today and gonna add tomorrow again if anything is growing too high, plant seems more spread out but not sure the previous hooks were doing much anymore.

I know autos aren't most peoples speciality but I've read mixed things online about this, should I defoliate now-ish (end of veg) or wait until the first few weeks of flower? Looking at the plants I can see lots of budsites are probably being shaded right now so wondering if/when I should expose those..

Can you bend the fans out of the way? If not, you can snip off the part of the fan that is shading the bud site. I'm wondering why you took the hooks out. They would usually remain in, and they serve to open the plant up into a canopy.

Thanks Carmen, I will look into bending any out of the way before I get out the snips :D

Hooks are back in today, I took them out because I felt like they were stopping the plant "growing out" in places, I think bad positioning of the hooks. I left them overnight and the tops have started reaching for the sky again, I've now tied the tops back down but with way less hooks and things seem to be spread out better now.

Basically the plants seem to be "bunching up" a bit and it was becoming quite hard to move anything due to the hooks already being everywhere. I know low internodal spacing is a good thing but it does seem to make LST quite difficult. I'll snap pics again later to show the new training, I'm thinking with less hooks in I can now add more when a node tries to grow up without it being so hard.

Do you keep the hooks in all the way till the end or do they come out after flower has started and the plant isn't stretching any more?

Maybe try to use the hooks to move leaves out of the way?
Yeah I'll give it another go tonight mate cheers, the plant seems very compact which I am finding makes this more difficult but I'll give it another go and see what I can do. Looking forward to quadlining the next lot as I feel it looks much more organised and easier to manage but I'm sure I'll find out the difficulties with that method too :D

They have to do some growing to train them. A day or two makes a difference. Patience.
