heya weaseley.... your journal is on fire weaseley,, sheesh...
Yeah I can't keep up either. It's not really my fault though. Quick, pee on it.
i have a grafting q iffin i might,, i tried to keep up on the topic in yer jernal but fell too far behind,
i am mildly interested because with the upcomming pot laws in nuckville one house is only legally allowed four plants so grafting one big mother, or micro mother in my case might be a useful tool. i think this has all been discussed here
but, what is the verdict please? do the grafts retain their original genetics one hundred percent?? or is there some mixing of blood happening?
i would think, in my case anyway, that a mixing of blood would not be the preferred outcome
Ok, well the verdict, not from me but from others who actually know what they're talking about, is - no. There is no genetic transfer. There is only some sort of 'influence' that occurs. That influence is important, and much desired by the gardeners that practice grafting, but it ends when the graft ends. Grow out a cutting of a grafted on strain, and it should be the same as it was pre-graft. Grow a seed from the fruit of a grafted tree, and you'll probably end up producing a somewhat different looking plant and fruit than the one you got the seed from.
And you're right- it has been discussed a little. Here-
Weasel Forges Ahead and here a tiny bit
Weasel Forges Ahead and I think a few other places in this journal. People keep asking me this stuff and making me work at googling to come up with answers. Also I asked UptheHoller2 about it. Do you know him? He has that 'Mountain- advice from the over 50 club' thread. He has quite a bit of agricultural experience and he told me that the mingling effect of the graft is not a change at genetic level.
I also meant to ask him what happened to UptheHoller1, but forgot.
And yes I do believe that it could make a perfectly good option as a multi-strain mother plant. Grafting the way I'm doing it is super easy- now that I've done a few it's a piece of cake. The multi-strain mother plant idea kind of seems scary, having all the eggs in one basket like that, but as growers we usually seem to limp along pretty good without accidentally killing off many important plants - so I think it would be ok.
One of my veg plants has a fair pile of grafts on it now. It's a Panama, with several Malawi and Mama Thai grafts on it. Also it had two different Golden Tigers grafted on to it, in several places each. One recently turned out to be a hermie so I removed those grafts. The other GT is unsexed, so I'll have to cut those grafts off as well if it turns out male or hermie. Also I have some Honduras grafts on it. That's all my sativas I have going at the moment.
It's a bit of a confusing mess right now, that plant. But when the grafting action settles down I'll organize it better, into a less confusing mess, maybe with the strains isolated into sections more, and figure out a better labelling system for the individual strains on it.
Why don't you try it? I'd suggest using a thicker stalk like 3/16" or even 1/4" if possible. Makes it very easy. Way easier than those scrawny little stems I've been pissing around with. All you have to do is notch them together and then wrap them up for ten days or so. Follow my handy tutorial, or send $37.99 for the handy bonus hints package.
....these [Thai x OGK] seeds are the biggest seeds i have ever seen,, beauties,, i must call them 'nuts', not seeds
Cool. Yeah I noticed that with the seeds from the Thai crosses as well. What do you think of the OG Kush? Sorry if I missed it in your journal, but you must have smoked some by now. Everyone seems to like that strain. Think it may be a good replacement for the PrimaDonna Chunk?
...this year i had the seeds already and my planning was better,,.... the plant is doing great,, hardy things,, just an fyi
...i am out for now friendhave more q's but i forget,,
i will fix that.
Yes please. Ask away. I like questions- sorry it took so long to reply- but after the first one got deleted it was harder to get back to.
So you think I should sprout an auto?
I've got plenty of auto seeds and have never grown one. Might be nice to exercise my rights as a law abiding citizen of the Canadian future and plunk one in the greenhouse. I'd have to explain it to my kid then though... (and him to his mom which is the actual real issue).
