Volksball's First Grow: White Widow Feminized Grow Journal 2018

Happy Sunday, growers.

We're at 9 weeks from seed today and the girls seem to be moving along well.

The scrog seems to be coming along nicely. The girls had a good feeding yesterday which, I think, came a bit late. I've been used to feeding every three days, but since the scrog, I think they've grown quite a bit more and drained their resources faster. I've ncreased the feed from a gallon each, to 1.3 gallons each or 4 gallons for the three plants.

I've noticed that a few of the growth tips grow into the scrog cell borders from below and have lost their beauty. They aren't dying, but have grown a bit wonky. Hoping they're not damaged. I keep tucking fan leaves under things and new bud sites outward. There is more work here, but I dont mind it - it's therapeutic and likely going to add to my yeild. Happy to do it.

Speaking of undergrowth, as you'll see in the pictures, it's gotten unruly! I'm doing my best to tuck and open the middle, but woah, it has gotten thick! @Pennywise warns against defoliating too early and robbing the plants of the valuable fan leaves that feed them in veg. I tend to agree - why veg if you're going to not veg fully? He suggests to defoliate or lollipop three weeks into flower.

Any suggestions? Or in the words of the late Jerry Garcia, "Keep on Tucking"....er...something like that.

Day 63.

Thanks.

Scrog looks good, if you have any growth under the net that’s not getting any light, I’d trim those, that’s a really thick canopy.
No kidding! Hope that's a good thing, as in healthy. I thought it to be pretty darn think myself. If I trim some fan leaves from below, the new bud sites will get more light. Should I trim the fans? Or the bud sites? Or both?

I’d trim fans that aren’t getting light, wait until after the stretch to trim any low branches. You want to give them a chance to stretch to the light.
Oh ok. Thanks. How about fans that are covering bud sites? Just tuck them under?

Hey folks,

A couple questions. I'm about to defoliate the fan leaves that aren't seeing much or any light. It may seem obvious, but I've attached picture of the leaves I think should be going. If I'm right, please let me know so I don't go butchering my plants. They just seem so big and necessary.

Also, I think they're in a bit of a transition with watering. They are just about ready to be watered- now 48 hours from the last feed, when they've been on a 72 hour feeding cycle. I think the morning will be perfect timing, but my mornings are busy. Would you water tonight, somewhat early, but not too early? Or wait until tomorrow evening when they'll definitely be dry (as I learned the last time I let them go 72 hours)?

Also a few pics if the scrog and my scrogging techniques. Again, if you see anything abusive or plain wrong, please let me know. You guys have been a great help in this process, so I'm always looking to hear what you think might need a change.

Thanks.

I’d water a little early, they’re looking droopy. Keep tucking until 3/4 of the net is full. Then let them go vertical for a week or so then flip.
Ah ok. Thanks. You mentioned the other day that I should defoliate the fans that aren't seeing the light. Should I remove the ones in the pic? Or just keep tucking instead?

yes, time to clean it up under there.. get some airflow. Let's see some bare stems under that screen.
Oh ok. Thanks. How bare and how many? Ha. I didnt expect that, but happy to do it if it helps them up top.

Hey guys,

My plants have always given off the smell of growing plants, but today, there was a much more pungent smell. Not quite cannabis, but almost like freshly cut plants. Almost a bit sour, but still very organic smelling. The temp is at 26c and the RH was at 65%. It felt quite humid in there as well. I worry that it may be the smell of mold or mildew, so I killed the humidifier for a bit. The pots are still fairly dense, so they'll keep the humidity around 60% with the lights out.

Any thoughts why the odor was more pungent today?

I should note, I came home a couple hours earlier today and just as the lights went out. Could this be the smell of plants very recently under lights and in the heat? I normally don't get home until they've been in the dark for a couple hours.

I think that is totally normal... more transpiration in the light, so more water is being thrown off and with that the smell.... It will get more and more pungent as we get further along into flower too. I am not a big proponent of high RH, especially as we move into flower. Although valuable in early veg for rapid growth, high RH in flower and with a full under canopy, can cause more trouble than it is worth, IMHO.

Ok. Thank you. I figure that I'll have no use for the humidifier come flower, but I just try to keep them in the 60-70% range now. Maybe I'll see where they maintain without the humidifier. I'll likely have to water more often, but that's ok.

Happy Friday eve everyone,

I did a round of defoliating and took off a good number if the fan leaves below. I read to do it in stages not to shock the plant. I tried to stick to less than 20% of the fans below. It may look like a conservative cut, but I figure less is safer than more here. See the pics. It actually looked more bare until the plants dropped right after their haircuts as you'll see in the group shot. Hopefully that isnt a very bad sign.

I increased their feed amount to 1.67 gal each from 1.33. They were flying through what they got.

A good number of leaves came off the three plants as you'll see.

Thx.
