Virgin Ground And The Little Star Asterion

Happy Halloween all! My favorite day of the year. At the same time I always get nervous. Right now the Earth is going through the Taurid meteor stream. We do this in June as well as October/November. Meteors hit the Earth all the time. We usually ignore the reports or are unaware we have had an impact at all as a number of them hit the ocean. A modern example of the Taurid meteor showers possible destructive power was the Tunguska event of 1908. And that was not a direct hit.

Cosmic roulette ,anyone? Scary Halloween stories are fun.

Actually, a mattress on the floor is good enough for me lol
Ha ha, my box spring somehow got broken a few months ago.... I have a mattress on the floor as we speak.

I need potassium bicarbonate for pH up. I'm going to try the micro brew supply in my town. They should have it.

Plants are greening up. I did get some tip burn. Contemplating a flush. I really don't know if I am in the flushing camp. Seems really hard on the plant. Any problems I had were probably an error on my part , to be fair.

Bud are getting really fat now, so they are still growing. I looked back at my first grow. I can't believe the difference. These crazy chicas are 4x the size of their mommas. The buds on these are almost to the size of the ones I harvested from my first grow. They should be twice the size, easily.

Yes, that and pH my water...properly. I use white vinegar to lower it and it works fine. Getting some pH up hopefully today. I bought a pH meter. Should be here Thursday. Hopefully it works... It is gently used. Hopefully he stored it correctly. I can return it if need be.

I also don't think I let my nutes sit long enough before I pH them and then use them. So I may not be pHing correctly. Vinegar gives an almost immediate reaction. Baking soda may take more time. This is what I have been using for pH up.

How beneficial is it to oxygenate your nute mix? I do have aquarium pumps and air stones laying around.

When you water and let the plant drink and water evaporates it pulls oxygen into the soil or coco. That's where most of it comes from.
Yup, I totally get that.
I understand that organic growers use pumps to oxygenate their tea mixes. Beneficial bacteria use a lot of oxygen.

I guess the reason that I have not done it is when you agitate the surface, it brings atmospheric co2 into equilibrium in the water, changing your pH. More co2 = lower pH. You also lose oxygen when this gas exchange is made ,if I remember correctly.

I know the effect it has on my aquatic plants, which is positive. I don't think that it translates to terrestrial plants the same way . It is much easier for terrestrial plants to obtain atmospheric co2 than aquatics. Guess I'll have to hit the books on that one.

I think it tops out at 3000 ppm or something like that. Water can only take on so much co2 through surface agitation. This is in the normal range and not toxic. I need to find my notes I kept on the subject. Make sure I have this right. It's been a while.

Aside from mixing my nutrients, I don't see any real gain from it....yet. More research is needed to satisfy me, I guess.

Bubble your nutes if it makes you feel better, atmospheric co2 is not enough to go into a solution around pH of 6+ and stay there for any length of time.

CO2 in water is a problem generally with wells....In normal municipal environments it's not an issue (but I know that is not atmosphere).

I pull cistern water, dump nutes in, usually in a 2 liter container, then just stir with the pH pen as I add nutes, then follow with pH up usually stirring and agitating the water as I drop it in and watch the meter. Then it goes on the plant.

I can see how an airstone would benefit if your using a res or maybe mixing a tea in the backyard.

bubbling temporary and pHing could give you a false reading, mix a gallon of nutes to 6.5 w your pen, cap it and take the pH 4 hours later....it will be lower usually until you agitate the solution.

I am saying stuff you already know from your aquarium chemistry though...

I found potassium bicarb. $2 for 2 oz. Gonna go get some and then figure out how much to use. I bet I could look at the directions for earth juice. That is 95% ca bicarb.

@nobodyhere . Yup that's why I don't want to mess with it. My plants aren't starving for oxygen. I know false reading are not fun. Some aquarium dechlorinators will give false ammonia readings. False pH readings would drive me batty.

Hi VG, enjoying your journal. Thanks. Also your halloweenie new avatar. Your green girls are looking good. Back to the smell at lights out. I don't recall the timing but yes they do smell more strongly at different times. I was relating it to weather they are wet or dry in the watering cycle but now you made me think about the dark/light cycle. hmm. Good one. Enjoy your day. Hi Birdie
