Oh I know jon, and trust me, I really appreciate the sparky advice by you and hiker, for real.
Doesn't change the fact I'm right ****ing PO'd about my situation..
I mean I just wanna grow some meds God Damnit!

Re: Vick074-OG Kush Last Run in CocoSoil-CO2-1KHPS-5X5Tent-with Porta Scrogs!? Porta

lol..try running your big light off of that line if it doesnt flicker your ok for now:)

The amount of unhooking and mucking about just to get that light down there is going to be a major pain.
So I'm just going to use my DIY CFL light bank to test. It's running at 420 watts so it should be enough to test.
Please no flicker!!!!

LOL tell us how you really feel!

Ya, if the lights flicker on that shed outlet too, you're buggered. (First time I've ever got to use that word! :) )

Sorry Vick, but those pictures don't help too much. When you said "The copper wire going through the wall into the shop goes directly to this dedicated plug.", did you mean the wire on the left or the right in your picture?

That bare twisted copper wire is a ground wire. If that's the one you're talking about, then it's only going over there to ground that surface mounted metal box (a good thing). The actual power is coming in on another wire. Perhaps it's inside that conduit on the right? It doesn't matter really. If you tap it, you're probably going to want to do it inside the box.

If you're really unsure about your abilities with electrical, I can't recommend strongly enough to find a friend that can advise you first hand. I'm willing to help as much as I can, but I have some reservations about suggesting someone mess around with electricity without knowing how to do so safely. Don't take this as a criticism. I just don't want you, or anyone else, to get hurt.

It sure sounds like a move could be in your best interest. This time you can look for a place knowing you want to grow there. I suspect you didn't decide to grow until after moving into this house.

I don't know a lot about electrical but when you say dedicated plug, is that the only thing on that circuit? What it seems to me is that 1 amp equals about 100 watts. Ie a 1000 watt light draws 10 amps. If you try to run two 1000 watt lights on a 15 amp circuit it should pop breaker not flicker. Unless you have a bad breaker. If it is in fact something causing the Sinusoidal wave to be inconsistant then a line conditioner may be a solution. I googled them and it appears you can get one for under $100. I know most of us are running on a shoestring budget but seems cheaper than moving. Hope this helps.

I feel for you Vick. If you were to consider moving I would ask the landlord first to fix or help fix the problem. What do you have to loose? Just tell him he can fix it and you will stay or if not you will move. Good chance he would want to work with you instead of finding another tennant.

Hey hiker,

Sorry for the slow response buddy, was doing detective work all night last night.
And I think I found the problem!!!
First I just wanted to make a correction that the photo I posted of the conduit going through the wall was what was going to the dedicated plug. My bad. The copper wire is just grounding it.
I didn't get around to testing it with a light but this is what I was thinking. If all the house lights are flickering, like you said, it is something in the house that is plugged in that is causing the inconsistent draw. So I started by going around the house unplugging things and waiting to see lights flickers. After hours of testing in our main floor and upstairs it was still flickering, even when lights/fans upstairs were unplugged. So I talked to our downstairs neighbors. They said their Fridge was acting weird, and leaking. hmmmmm.. So I proposed we do the unplug test and we tried it. 10 minutes of their old crappy fridge being unplugged not one single flicker!
Plugged it back in, fricken Flicker city. Unplugged it again for another 5 minutes, NO FLICKERS!

Wiw!

So it appears I found the problem, and let our landlord know. He's coming by today to either replace their fridge or have it repaired.
What a fu**ing relief..

Now, this poses another question.

Since this crappy fridge has been causing power surges, could this have to do with why our hydro bill was so high? Because when it would flicker it would go brighter for a few seconds, then back to normal. If that fridge is to blame, is my landlord liable for that extra hydro it seemed to eat as a result of the surging?

Hey Maine,
Thanks for chiming in.
I was only running one 1000 watt light off of one plug, and it wasn't even at full power (75%)
totally understand about the each 1000 watter using 10 amps, and never plan to run double that at all.
In fact I want to run 2, 600 watters. Each on their own plug. Then I shouldn't have any problems with overloading the breakers at all.
As for the flickering I think I narrowed it down to the downstairs fridge being the power sucker.

That might be pushing it, even if it was the fridges fault, unless he is aware of your grow, then you might? approach him, but really...weighing all the factors, is it WORTH IT? :cheesygrinsmiley:Reps for tracking down the problem!

I just mentioned to him that the faulty fridge might explain why our hydro bill was almost double what it usually is, due to the power surges. I didn't by any means say, "you owe us blah blah!" I just left the ball in his court.
He's an extremely reasonable guy, so if he feels compelled to offer some money off the rent because of it, or offer to compensate us a bit? Kool and the Gang, If not? no big whoop.
We'll just suck it up.
But it might be worth contacting the hydro company, just to explain what has happened. So I don't go on an alert list because of our recent power spike.

Re: Vick074-OG Kush Last Run in CocoSoil-CO2-1KHPS-5X5Tent-with Porta Scrogs!? Porta

Is your electric bill really gonna get you busted?

It's possible the faulty fridge was the cause of the high electric bill. If the motor was faulting, it could be drawing HUGE amounts of current for brief moments. That's why your lights flickered. Basically, the motor was grounding and sending all the current the wire could supply into the ground. If that was the case, you're lucky nothing burned! Since you said the flickering happened all the time, it makes sense the bill went up so high. I agree with Hoz, it might not be worth it to ask the landlord to compensate for the bill. If it's his fridge, maybe, but like Hoz said, is it really worth risking your grow being discovered?

Sometimes I feel nervous that I grow in the house I own, but then again, I don't have to deal with landlords wanting to inspect their property. :)

Sounds like you got everything sorted out and have located a dedicated circuit to use.

As you say...

WIW! :)

Vick074. Congrats finding the fault. As a landlord, I pay the electric bill for my renters water system. The bill is ~$25 most of the time. One month it came in at $285. The renter said "Ya, that new pond in the backyard just kinda appeared." I would have liked to have a renter more like you than them. You saw a problem and brought it to his attention. Hurray for you.

WHAT HIKER SAID...hopefully he is as cool as you say...as far as the electric company goes...if you explain the problem and can show them the receipt for the new "energy efficient" fridge...they might give you a discount or prepaid card to help you out...you never know until you ask :cheesygrinsmiley:

True that.
Plus I think that people that just shut up and pay their outrageous Hydro bill, would be more suspect than someone that was like, "hey, what the hell!!?" , "I didn't use this power, and here's the proof."
booya, give me my credit points thank you very much mr. Hydro nazi..
