Turbo Bucket's Take On RADDWC: Grow Room Build-Up

I guess thanks to the one or two people that actually stop by here once in awhile. If this journal isn't helping anyone I may stop keeping it.

don't run away dammit ! can't get to everywhere enough lol

oh, and

get frustrated seeing these amazing scrogs. its the way i want to go, but the situation demands otherwise.

Surge protectors are ok as long as they're not overloaded. But they end up handling a pretty good load by the time they run a few amps 12-18 hours a day.

surge protectors aren't really fused. run fused power drops when i don't have a dedicated circuit. the room should snap before the main with the fused power drops. transferred idea from show production.

Timers are the dangerous ones. Pretty easy for them to short out or burn up. The cheaper they are the more likely it is. I usually recommended anything for a grow room goes through a GFI (sometimes called GFCI) ground fault circuit interrupt. The bathroom outlets with a reset button. Very effective at ensuring nothing crazy happens.

gfi is a good idea. what is your take on the digital timers ? went to them when i started to grow again, and i love them so far. no hassels yet.

I wonder if white out is opaque enough to block out indicator LEDs? May have to find myself a bottle and find out haha I have electrical tape over the ones in the veg closet.

electrical tape or black duct tape. have a heater in my veg room with a red led covered in electrical tape. black duct tape is king tho, it won't peel like electric. another show transfer.

I love scrogging. I figure I'm paying for all the photons may as well soak them up. Haha

I won't be running away, I'd just focus on the couple of sponsor grows more and probably do more single run journals. Just leave out all the room building stuff.

Fused drops are a really good idea. When I first started putting stuff together I really wanted a "lunchbox" from production haha. (I have a degree in digital media that I don't use, I just fix stuff now, from walk in coolers and 100 ton glycol chillers to antique tractors and big rigs. Smh)

Good quality digital timers are great. But there's a lot of cheap ones to go with the few good ones. I really like being able to set the irrigation pump on a 24 hour clock as opposed to a cycle timer. I run a longer cycle two hours before lights out to empty the rez over night and give the medium a nice rinse. Mechanicals are ultimately more robust but they don't work in every situation. These new intermatics will probably Outlast the boards. I've worked on a few of them that were 10-20 years old.

I'm sad the century ones tanked so badly. Being able to control both outlets independently was great and would be perfect for so many peoples applications but they fail in bad ways. They're just too high of a risk to justify the convenience they provide. Looking at reviews of them they like to arc out the plug blades, both inside and on the wall plug. Plus randomly turning on outside the scheduled times makes it worthless.

Gaffers tape is amazing haha I always say the only thing I learned from that degree was cord management.

a lot of power drops for power tools are fused. cheaper than show stuff too. i just buy them from our local national big box. just pay attention to specs on the box when purchasing. big ass yellow things usually.

we built our own distros. 50 and 100 amp for small / med hall size. then had fused drops run from them.
clean power ensures clean sound, and isolates the stage and rig. used to run my own distros and drops for the lighting. managed stage power as well. we kept the rig totally separate. the bigger stuff was more complicated on the distro side and fun lol.

i run cob led which is easier on the timers as well. digital wasn't a hard decision this time. wouldn't do it on hps / mh.

Yea the inrush with hid lighting would be hard on them for sure. I've seen a couple of digital timers that specifically state no digital ballasts. I guess I though digitals would be easier on them than magnetic ballasts but apparently I haven't looked at them enough to understand why.

Some of the cob arrays you guy's have are amazing. That's what I wanted to do but costs pushed me in this direction and they work so it's all good

cob is already old lol

fort st veg / clone rig. 4 cob with 5050 smd burples. running about 20% with burples in.
200 watt actual

jungle room rig during testing. 12 cob straight up. running 10% in pic.
600 watt actual. 2 separate drivers on two timers.

everyone is qb now.

Mutants can be really special
@Pennywise this was a 2nd branch off a node..had a couple like that but this either turned colour during flowering..or i just noticed it then..looks like a different plant
Not actually reveg plants, just "bonsai" mom's. Some of those plants are 2-3 years old. I periodically trim them all back and let them grow back out again. There are 16 strains between all the plants right now
You just trim them back every so often?...what size pot and what lights do you keep the mothers under..if you dont mind me asking..

Sorry @TurboBucket ..i messed up there..thats the plant i mentioned in my last post @Pennywise ..it was a 2nd branch outta one bud site..i had 3..this one either turned different colour during flowering..or i just noticed it then lol!.. sorry about the mix up guys

Hahaha it happens. Yea you can get some weird stuff early on in veg. Those can be cool to watch. I love watching vegetative growth as much as I like watching flowers start forming.

My mother's I basically just use my leftover/junk lights on haha. Technically there are two 4 ft led shop lights on either side of the closet that run 24hrs. (Tough ass lights because they've been on for over a year straight now). And directly above the moms I have a leftover from the spacebuckets a 200w equivalent(85w) UFO blurple, and a "full spectrum" cob 200w equivalent (70w) but that has half the chips burnt out so it's maybe 30w now. Those lights are on for 16 hours a day. The other side has a nice Maxbloom x4 for the veg girls so they get some of that reflecting on them.

I leave the shop lights on to keep temps up with the other lights off, plants prefer a lower temperature differential for vegetative growth, a higher temp difference makes them think it's fall and they want to try to flower. The plants still rest just fine I've been doing it this way for awhile multiple harvests from some of these mom's.

Leaving the little lights on all the time also reduces how much they stretch which makes keeping them in check easier.

I use 1 gallon squares and some 2 liter soda bottles cut down and drilled thru the bottom. I even have a Maui Wowie in a 1L bottle that I've managed to keep around for quite awhile as well.

I've gone through and trimmed roots/replaced medium in some of them, but with soilless medium and bottled nutes it doesn't seem to be necessary. My oldest mom is still in her original container and medium.

This is where I learned it from. Some OG knowledge to teach us new guys how to play.

Hey turbo!! Hope you are doing well!! Thought I’d stick my head on in and see what happening!

Hey buddy! Just wrangling some unruly flower ladies and getting the next wave moved into 3 gallon bags.

Chee..right..gotta lot too take in there..i didnt realise you could keep them in the same space..as the ones in veg?..im assuming you flower in a different space...and thank you very much for that invaluable bit off info mate..al be taking some that onboard bro..much appreciated

Yea a mother is just a veg plant that you don't flower. One half of the closet is veg the other half is mother's. I try to keep mine in that range usually 24-26°c. If I wanted faster veg growth I would keep them warmer up to 29°c and use more lights.
I have two tents I use for flowering only. And I keep that at 26-28°c during the day and I'm happy if it drops below 20 but I like to see 18°c over night. Low humidity at night. During the day I honestly don't care (it runs up to like 70+% sometimes shh), keep the airflow cranking and it's all good. At my temps and leaf surface temps higher humidity actually pushes the VPD closer to Target.

There's another rabbit hole for ya. Chasing the Vapor Pressure Defecit lol.
I just keep mine in the window mentioned above and don't worry about it much, some people really chase it though

Dialing in VPD really does make a difference when it comes to vigor and fast growth.

Yup definitely. I just don't like checking tables all the time haha. I basically figured out how far it can wander before I have to start checking, if it all stays inside of that no worries.

Happy fucking times! :yahoo:
sorry I got way too excited there! :bong:

Haha it's good to get excited now and again.

Oh yeah Good point. I'll have to pay attention to that a little closer now.

So I broke up the root balls from last harvest today. I didn't really think about it before but those were in airpots rather than the normal fabric pots. I can't imagine they would make that much of a difference, but maybe that is why the yield was so much higher?

The other thing I noticed in there was the size of the hydro roots compared to most of my plants. Usually the rootball coming out of the cloner is not that big, only in there for a few weeks. But last harvest was left in the cloner for an entire flowering cycle so 10 weeks give or take. Root and veg growth trimmed several times. I plopped them straight into 3 gallon airpots. Those hydro roots were very noticeable compared to normal so I'm thinking that was the biggest increase in yield. The big central hydro root ball, compared to a 1 gallon square media root ball.
So I think I really just need to make sure and veg longer in order to make the yields that high
