The Perpetual Healing Garden - SweetSue's Joyful Return

Good evening Sue. Hope you are enjoying your growing. I'm always sure to find something intriguing going on in these pages! I've a quick question. You mentioned somewhere about how many branches was Radogast shooting for, that you like 12. We'll, I'm lost on how this is achieved. I'm new and am thinking it's what node you top at?? Help me!! Lol... If so, I top 3rd node for no reason, just heard someone say 3rd so I do. Newbie McFly here! Lol I'm clueless though and would love to have you give me an insight on topping the plant and why. Thanks.

Think of it as the mythical hydra...cut one head off, 2 more return. Topping at the 3rd node gives you 6 tops right off the bat...top those for the 12. You need to do it early before the nodes start to stagger. At that point, if you need to slow down a groth tip, pull it down beneath the level of one you want to catch up

So you'd say let it get 5 or 6 nodes before topping the 3rd? I may have topped too early. As soon as I saw enough growth and stem above the 3rd node, I topped. Maybe I should let it grow a few before topping?

Letting it grow to 4 or 5 makes it easier, but is by no means required. Its like peeing with the seat down..all about aim :D

Thank you mouser. :hugs:

mouser gave you an excellent explaination. I typically wait for a moment somewhere around day 12-14 when they make a spurt upward, opening up a bit of space to get in there more easily. My plants tend to be very tightly noded.

When I work for tops it's not typically achieved by topping alone, but from one topping and some creative LST. Spread those branches out horizontally and the bud sites rise up to become colas. I love watching that happen. *giggle*

I'm getting pretty good at filling the pot. Next I'll get better at consistent yields. I've been learning by watching arteejay and Jay and incorporating their techniques with what I've learned from Graytail and Cajun. I'm surrounded by excellence. It can be intimidating at times. Lol!

Hey Sue. Quick question for you. You have the Extreme -Q vaporizer don't you? What heat setting do you prefer? :peace:

Evening supergroomer. I start out at 365 and increase gradually to around 395. Remember the taste is in the first couple inhalations, that's mostly the terpenoids. The cannabanoids are much later, and most people quit before they get all the cannabinoids because they can't taste it anymore. I smoke it to nothing and then eat the ABV like popcorn. I waste nothing. :laughtwo:

Thanks for stopping by the Dragons Den Sue! It's quite over there lol.

Did you execute Emerald? Haven't seen her in your updates since the nov 14.

Carn is budding up nice, :thumb: happy foliage or not. I can't say I would ever buy "kit" though if doc but doesnt have any answers who does?

:circle-of-love: Dear Lady Sue

and a Happy Dragon just for you.

remember to treat the aloe "badly". She loves it when you forget to water her. :Namaste:

I know you're wanting to make little aloe babies, Sue. When my wife gave me a cut off her aloe she told me to forget what I know about plants and abuse the hell out of it. Let it go dry, over water it, and if I want to make babies, plant it in a deep pot. They seem to be very resilient. Her's is an actual heirloom, in that her cutting came from her mother and is over 30 years old. Just be careful of bright lights. I had mine in with the other plants and it scorched. It's on a shelf out of any direct light in my flower room now and seems to be loving life.

Thank you both for the invaluable input. I want to let these flourish. Have you priced aloe flakes and the resultant shipping costs these days? No thank you. I'll grow my own.

I have them repotted in happier plots and sitting off to the side of the Timber Vero240. It's the closest thing to real sunlight I have in the arsenal and they're far enough away to be shaded from the direct rays.

This one, a gift from Radogast, :battingeyelashes:  is planted in a pot I recieved from Heirloom. *sigh* This helps me keep Heirloom in the front of my mind. He has a birthday coming up soon, and I intend to remember to celebrate it. It's within a week of mine, so I'll already be in celebration mode.

Who am I kidding? I'm already in celebration mode. :laughtwo:

It needs more soil. I'll be picking up another bag and adding it in with the next watering.

I still haven't located that video on propagating pups. I'll find it. There's so much much to sort through I hesitate to start.

Awww Hab....... You have this way. It does indeed look happy to be in your care.

I culled Emerald last week. I looked at her and threw up my hands in frustration. I didn't have the stomach to have another plant limping along.

Sometimes Hab, I act impulsively. You'll notice that if you stick around. It drives most of the guys crazy, I suspect, but they tend to forget that I'm surrounded by the most amazing cosmic forces. :battingeyelashes:

I pulled her, but didn't have the stomach to cut her out of the hempy. Instead, I set her off to the side of the Timber Vero240 and figured I'd see if she was worth cloning.
Surprise! She perked right up. Her color and stature improved. She's giving off an entirely new vibe. :yahoo: I mixed up a fresh batch of nutrients (5ml Micro, 10 ml Bloom/gal) ...........

IMG_173327.JPG

...... gave her a good feeding and set her up next to the DDA5 in the tiny closet. She won't be in the way here at all. When she's ready to flip I'll find her space in the flowering tent.

I have a good good feeling about this. :slide:

Continuing training adventures: Carn1:3, Day 41

I pulled her out today to spread her out a little more and get some real estate established.

When working with soft tie material I find the trick is to get it positioned so that nothing is being damaged, or threatened with damage. The material is wonderfully flexible and will mold to hold almost anywhere.

Getting coverage established.

Still have this open space to get something over.

IMG_174133.JPG

In honor of Duggan I supercropped the last top. :hugs:

Strong stem.

The clothes pin you see in the background is being used as a weight to keep that branch down and level. I was looking for something to do this and suddenly I thought of the way B A R uses clothes pins for easy supercropping and thought "That would work here!"

It did. :blunt:

Sue: The recent discussion on aloe reminded me that you use aloe when you take cuttings for clones. How do you use it in that scenario?

I have an aloe I keep in the North window of my kitchen, right next to the Christmas cactus. Their placement reminds me to water them once in a while.

The lactobacillus serum is ready to be strained and utilized.

No sense wasting it. Into the soil bins.

IMG_172933.JPG

If you saturate it with an equal amount of sugar you can store it on the shelf. Otherwise, find space in the refrigerator.

Why bother using LABS? From The Unconventional Gardener:

"Plants: growth aid

When added to water for plants, nutrient uptake efficiency is increased, which increases growth!

Improves growth of plants when applied as foliar spray and soil drench. Improves their efficiency in uptaking nutrients so naturally, growth is enhanced. With the use of these microorganisms, the nutrients you spray or drench to feed your plants become more bio-available and easily absorbable by the plants. Technically, you can say that plants do not use organic nutrients directly. Microorganisms convert organic nutrients to their inorganic constituents which the plants utilize. Utilizing microbes, you will notice better plant growth and health.

This is a consequence of the increased efficiency of nutrients. More nutrients available at smaller metabolic cost.
Lacto suppresses harmful bacteria in food/water that animals consume, enhances their gut flora so that line of defense is working optimally, etc.

Aid Compost:

Mix 2tbsp/L and spray on compost pile to improve decomposition. This is a huge topic that will be expanded upon in another post.

Aid Organic Fertilizer:
Add 1-2tbsp per gallon water-nutrient solution. Lacto consumes organic nutrients making them bio-available to plant roots.

Plants don't use organic fertilizer! Microbes break it down to inorganic constituents, and plants take those up. This product makes that process more efficient."

Everything in the garden got a foliar with the new LABS and all LOS pots got a drench with it added also. From now on it'll be part of every drench and be used as a foliar with regularity.

Sue: The recent discussion on aloe reminded me that you use aloe when you take cuttings for clones. How do you use it in that scenario?

I have an aloe I keep in the North window of my kitchen, right next to the Christmas cactus. Their placement reminds me to water them once in a while.

Good afternoon AKgramma. :hugs:

I start by cutting a piece of aloe I feel will give me enough gel to get a decent ratio to the water I'm going to use. My intent is to start by soaking the Rapid Rooters in the resulting juice before I start processing cuttings. I have an immersion blender, and I whirl up the alone and water with that. It's the best approach I've found to date and works so well I recommend you buy a blender if you don't already own one. One of my best investments in the past year.

As I prepare to insert the cuttings my routine is to slide the end of the cutting through a fresh piece of fillet to pick up a coating of the gel, dip it into the rooting hormone and insert it into the aloe-soaked plug. The plugs require a small puddle to sit in. That puddle is made of aloe water. Any hydrating of the clones is done with aloe water.

So far I'm running 100%. Worth a try.

Soil reconditioning

I have two bins of reconditioned soil cooking. I've started the process with each by adding the following mix:
- 1.5 cups Clackamas Coot's -style amendment mix
- 1 cup CC-style mineral mix
- 3/4-1 cup Yum-Yum fertilizer
- 1 cup neem meal
- 3 cups comfrey soak made with 1/4 cup root, liquified
- 1 Tbs TM-7
- 1 gallon rice hulls

Hydrated until it reached an optimal consistency. Yesterday I added 1 cup of Stinging Nettle leaves to each bin. Today I added the curds from the LABS. Both bins got watered with the Nettle ACT that was left after I drenched the LOS pots and then I topped them up with a basic drench.

Per gallon water:
- 2/3 cup comfrey soak
- 1 cup LABS
- 5 ml Agsil16

I'm letting the aloe recover from the transplant before I use them again.

Smells divine, feels luxurious against the skin. It occurred to me as I was watering the Train Wreck Auto that it going to take a special man who gets excited about the smells of quality cannabis cultivation. The smell of neem and LABS combined can be a bit overwhelming to the uninitiated. :laughtwo:

The soil left from the DDA4. It cooks for two months. It's not necessary to let it go that long, but it won't hurt to leave it alone and let it cook together. I'll have that luxury.

image37897.jpg

The soil from Early Miss. (No TM-7 was added to this soil) This will be ready to go any time I want. There's nothing hot in this mix. I'll let it sit as long as possible. I have another bin of soil ready and waiting to be used.

image37898.jpg

From the beginning soil-building has been one of my favorite parts of this entire adventure. I'm like a little girl - with a lot more strength :laughtwo: - when I'm up to my elbows in dirt. On such a small scale, if you have the strength, there's no better way to mix it, IMO, than to get right in there and move it with your hands.

Aloes are hardy plants just rip them off with roots and stick them in the dirt. Thats what I did . Never watered they are outdoors by me though. I live in the tropics lots of sun and heat and they are thriving. They do not dry out quickly and they shoot new pups quickly once established.
Edit:your birhday is coming up soon sweet so is mine .
