The Mountain: Grow Support From The Over 50 Club

When I was a young man, a long, long time ago - I was an EMT in Detroit, MI. We were scheduled like the fire department guys: two days on, three days off then three days on, two days off. You were first out for your first day, second out for second day etc.

Everyone knew and schedules were done to some extent based on lunar cycle. The bosses wouldn't admit it, but it was. If the full moon hit on a weekend (especially a holiday weekend) it was going to be a hell of a shift. If it was a three day weekend, full moon AND the end of the month when welfare checks went out -- it was really going to be hell. We called it a 'trifecta' and it happened two or three times a year. They would purposefully schedule one or two extra units just for the hub part of the city. It didn't matter if you were first out or last out - you prolly weren't going to get any rest during your three day shift. Yea, three days of rapes, murders, shootings, knifings, DUI accidents, overdoses ... people went mad. Stark raving mad. Births too - one full moon my partner and I responded to four "sudden onset of birth" calls in a row. One had delivered before we got there. One made a hell of a mess on me and in my unit and delivered in the ambulance on the way.

And it was statistically supported ... full moon.

Damn Auggie that's harder than my current plant dilemma by miles. Feel weird asking for help but I do need it afterbirth or not. Though as someone with a few miles logged in the meat can (I have a sense of adventure that bites me now and again) I so do appreciated you and yours being there. As for the photo it's week 4 of flower flush of soil was again 4.0 and out came baking soda and water to chase the magical 6.0 PH reading. FFOC and Ff Jutes at half strength did a heavy cal mag two weeks ago. Flushed hard after reading w I @6.5ph then one gallon of same w one tablespoon baking soda. What causes this ?

Also flower development continues apace. California Orange week 4 of flower.

Yep these small dots looking almost like from a toxic fallout are signs of pest activity and too high humidity that comes with it and not enough calcium to build strong cells. I see them all the time on outdoor plants growing in tough environment. Hope that helps.

It does kinda look like mite bites .. but if you've scoped it and can't see legs then it isn't. They are hard to see, and russet mites are hard to see even with a microscope. Look careful.

Be careful doing too many 'treatments' at one time. When you do that, and you get a result (good or bad) you don't know which one did it, so you end up really screwed and worse - having learned nothing. When making Ph changes, do so very slowly. Use CalMag very conservatively.

In fact ... I don't use CalMag at all. I put eggshells in my dirt when I plant (calcium) and I use Epsom Salts 1 cup in 50 gal reservoir once a month (magnesium). I can't see spending a hell of a lot of money for something that is so cheap - and CalMag is expensive. I didn't have enough eggshells once so I bought some calcium tablets at the drug store and ground them up and added to soil. Cost me all of $6, plus another $4 for a pound of Epsom Salts. Better than $35 for a small bottle of CalMag that would last me about two weeks.

Are the stems red? Do the have a dark red color? Then it is magnesium def. Also, don't use too much Baking Soda. A little bit is ok, but if your water needs constant or serious adjustment it is best to get the Ph up or down that is made for that.

The biggest mistake that most new growers make is "too much love". Too much water, too much feed, too much ... love. Let the roots get dry, lift the container ... wait till its dry then give it a good ph balanced drink. No nutes. Wait till it drys again ... then give it a half strength dose of food. See how she responds to that. If she likes it then get back on the full strength nutes ... but wait till she drys out a bit. It's good for her to get hungry, and she doesn't need her feet wet ALL the time.

It's too bad you're in flower and having to deal with this crap. Not good timing. Oh well, you're learning and that is always good. Next run will be much, much easier - you'll see.

Also, consider growing an easier genetic next time.
Who needs finicky girls? I've never done well with 'drama queens'.
Usually set them out on the curb if they don't straighten up.
Plants or humans -- same treatment.
"I am giving you EVERY opportunity to thrive. That's not good enough? Then get the fuck OUT."

Fully understand and definitely agree with ya about what the full moon means to peeps that have to work under it`s influence. Spent over 25 years as a Firefighter in Flint , 60 miles north of Detroit. Our Gov. Snyder, in a court case referred to Flint as "Murder City". Flint has been called "the most dangerous city in the country in which to live". This according to FBI statistics. Flint also has ranked #1 in the country in the rate of arson, always in the top 10. Devil`s night was always fun too.

That's because as the moon passes over the US it is closest to Earth at the exact point where Flint, MI is located.

**Not true but lets see if this untruth gets spread around the cyber world and becomes urban legend. LOL!

you start spreading roomers like that and no one will want to be in flint Michigan under a full moon

Hey Folks! Let me weigh ib here on a couple of issues. Moon phases are tough to me. I used to follow them planting as closely as I could. Weather and the need to make money changes that fairly quickly. I can say that I have never noticed any harvest total differences on plants started in my houses and transplanted outside. This goes for both initial planting, as well as transplanting. However, having said that I have to admit that I have always harvested my outdoor plants during full moons in Sept or October. I don't know why other than to me the buds seem to be especially swollen during those time periods either due to the stage of the plant or my hillbilly moon phase induced imagination!

ON High Yogis plant I would agree that you may have indeed a couple of things going on here. Conradino is correct on the plant stress and calcium requirements. But I would also be surprised if you don't have a mite issue as well. Stressed plants often also have insect issues.

So lets talk calcium deficiencies. This is a very common plague amongst tomato growers. Home gardeners also should be familiar with this problem. It show up as blossom end rot in tomatoes and by the time you see it...it's already too late to fix it. The reason is that calcium, like a lot of minerals is not easily translocated and absorbed by the plant. Ok Holler enough of the mumbo- jumbo where can I get calcium cheaply? Milk feeding, while not a good idea on indoor grows, is a time honored source of country folk calcium for centuries. Old time farmers often had plenty of milk...some naturally went bad...usually poured out on hog slop. Sometimes in fence rows.....guess what they noticed plants in those fence rows grew well. My grandmother fed milk and water mixed to her tomatoes and squash every few weeks . Auggie eggshell point is also a time honored source. Laying mash from a feed store added to your soil early in the growing season also works well but be certain that it doesn't contain antibiotics. Finally there are calcium supplements for blossom end rot in tomatoes that do well on weed also. Now here's the kicker.... what ever you do....you have to apply it early...it takes a while to be metabolized by the plant depending upon it's stage of growth.

Finally. a reminder to my outdoor growing friends. If you are like me you make as few visits as possible to the girls during a season. Trails can be your downfall. But this is the time for your heavy flowering nutrient feed. Most plants in the northern hemisphere are in early to mid flower. It is at this most active flowering stage that your girls will build the frame and shoot pistils for dramatic bud formation later! This is also a time that I reinforce any camouflage techniques, bend branches, position cover, strip any excess fan leaves, etc.

As always, best of luck in all you grow!

I don't know of anyone that would want to be in Flint, Michigan during broad daylight much less during a full moon. :blunt:

Thank You for your thoughts concerning the city of my birth, my upbringing, my schooling, my working life, Flint, Michigan.
This must make me one bad ass mother fucker then.

I second that. You my friend are a bad ass!

FYI......Holler and I were just joking. Please don't start shooting up the place!! :)

Holler and UnkC,
