The DIY COB Addiction

You can get twice the wattage per square foot. Twice the yield and lower cost of electricity maybe even cut out the portable ac and just use fans. Why not? Also your on a full spectrum as opposed to just a low nanometer red on a hps. Oh and you don’t have to switch bulbs

I'm not arguing with that - Do you know anyone already flowering on 12 watts per square foot? I haven't seen it done on 420 magazine.

I am currently on 33.3 ft2 running about 285 watt with about 8.5 watt per square foot might not be ideal but I and getting some decent quality. yes it might not be the biggest buds ever but for what I have its working quite well and I know it will taste quite good. I'll post pic as well when I have the time

I'll check it out. - - oops I see you are new and are not running a grow journal (yet!))
Welcome to :420:

Check out rich farmer running 700 watts in a 4x4 tent. All cree cob led

I will, but you reinforce my point there ,

700 watts for a 4x4 tent -- not 700 watts for a 7x7 ft tent.

Yes I am no grow journal since this is my very 1st grow I wanted to work out my newbie kinks before I post a journal. How ever tho the journal I do write, will contain my diy grow room and diy setup. No tent just a bedroom split up so I can contain my areas

I think I understand. I use the grow journal as a place to work out my kinks and get questions answered. It was comments in my grow journal that encouraged me to put up stalls as grow areas (so I could micro-manage the heat and humidity,) helped me spot problems, etc. - Plus we socialize in grow logs :)

People might think I use a grow log to show off, but my last two plants harvested were of most unimpressive size (8g and 16g) - I aim for 70g plus :)

Can easily achieve more than the 8-12 watts per square foot with a diy. And u might want to reconsider with your options with the unimpressive yields you got going.

Cool now there are mixture of ways you can run cob setups.
Do you want just cob leds or a mix between cob leds and qb boards?

You can run a set of 12 vero 29se with a mixture of 35k 80cri and 4K 80 cri. With 2 drivers a 480-1750 and a 320-1750 for a total of 756watts. 63watts per chip @1750ma. Total cost for chips and driver including misc parts that you will need like thermal compound, lenses, heat sinks etc. roughly 820$. That will not include your aluminum substrate.

I would like to just keep it cobs maybe down the grow or two I'll add some qb later on. I would like some cobs that I can push if I want to but maybe 70-90 watts if I wanted to

Did anyone ever try these? When things sounds too good to be true they usually are and in this case they're simply so cheap I wouldn't trust them at all. But it's really interesting to see how cheap some people can build a lamp

Can't get cheaper than this

I've seen them on a YouTube video. Some guy was doing a review on those. They run off of ac voltage and they all have there built in resistors and capacitor to power up the chips. Pretty crazy.

Ok. I see your point. Are you going to have these cobs in a fixed or on ratchet straps to move them up and down?

For the setup that I'm thinking you would need for my opinion without it being over kill and stressing out your plants out.

14 vero 29 se poke in d version 7@ 35k 7@4k
2 meanwell 480-2100 b and 1 240-2100 b
Will be running at max sumwhere around 1000 watts of full spectrum led. You will not need to turn up all the way trust me @50w a chip that is plenty bright if u ask me. So @ 2100ma those chips will run at 75w per chip. That 90 watts per chip would be nice shit even the 100w plus chips would be but your going to need like 12 foot ceilings to run those at max. The lumens that those 100w chips put out are insane man!

It will be adjustable on the height. And thank you on the input on the wattage. Yeah the plan was to try to keep each light around 40-50 watts but have the option to push if I wanted to

I like the 7-7 split between the 35k and 4K. Thank you so much man I'm not the best when it comes to data sheets and what not I'm more hands on once I get all the parts putting it together will be easy. I also like the poke in option saves me some extra money ordering a decent set to solder. Again man thank you

Hello 420'ers, my first post here, been looking around for an active forum discussing DIY COB builds and this one seems to be very informative and active, so kudos !

Anyhow, im going to be taking a plunge into diy'ing me a rig or 2 for my 8' x 4' tent. Currectly running 4 x 315w CMH lights in there, 2 x 930 bulbs and 2 x 942 bulbs over 3 plants in a diy RDWC.

What id like to know is, how many of these kits would i need to cover my area if i went full CoB, and how many would i need if i wanted to go COB + 2 x 315w CMH's

4pcs of Original CREE CXB3590 cob ( CXB3590 2700K-6500K top bin )

4pcs of thermal tape

4pcs of Ideal holder 50-2303CR

4pcs of Ideal 50-2300AN

4pcs of KingBrite Reflector KB-D82-90RF
4pcs of Pre-drilled Passive heatsink Φ133*H70mm(for 55-65W)

5pcs of Wago quick connectors
1pcs of Original MW driver HLG-185H-C1400B

1pcs of TOCOS (soldered) 100K linear potentiometer

Also which configuration would be best for coverage, would 1 big rig or 2 smaller ones be better, would adding some CMH be a good idea ?

The COBs would ideally see me through Veg and Flower also.

Cheers guy / gals

Hukt

I'm looking to build a light that will cover 20 sq ft. I would like to use vero29 D cobs. This light will be for veg and flower. Can you recommend a sweet setup for this area please? I haven't read the whole thread yet so I apologize if this has already been covered. From what I have read so far is 3000 or 3500 90 cri is recommended.
