The Deep Water Culture Home

You think I didn't wonder about it before I found out? LOL! My first grow I didn't even have covers on it because I thought the hydrotrom would block the light. That didn't work out well. My first grow was before I found what turned out to be the Deep Water Culture.

You trying to duck responsibility for that question? LOL!

Hey all, do you think I'll have issue with my bubble grow with water that comes out at 7 PH and 300 PPM? I have 3 plants running in the SH setup and all are showing 2 leafs, not counting the first two seeds cover leaf things, I'm getting ready to start nutes, but am worried the PPM is really high.

Thanks all!

What nutes are you running? SH? 7ph and 300ppm water is usable as my tap is 7.5 and 350-500. I use gh nutes and they have a hard water micro that can handle that kind of water. Just remember when you measure ppm you are looking for the net nutrient ppm so you will have to deduct 300 from your reading. Don't be too anxious to add nutes until they have 4 real leaves. Let that second set get almost as big as the first set of leaves before you go 1/4 strength nutes for the first time. They may get a pale green look to them but wait.

Perfect info here. Thanks a ton! I'm using SH nutes for veg. I was thinking of adding a 1/8 dose nutes tomorrow night, but now I think I'll wait for the 4th leaf like you said. :thankyou:

I have the same specs in my water and I MUCH prefer it to distilled water, I find much better PH control. However I use Technaflora nutes. I use the same PH up/down as you too...once i have my 6 gallons I put a capfull of PHdown in there and once I add the nutes its usually between 5.8-6.2 But all nutes are different.

ps. I would wait for the 4th leaf like MC said, its alot easier to correct going too slow on nutes than too fast..

Ughhhh I burned my plants a couple days ago... I thought I put in double micro and I think I did.... yeah..... 120 ml of micro, 30 ml of grow and 90 ml of bloom is a bit much for six gallons... dammit.

So I put them on the flush. Clearex for two days and then straight water for 3, then back to half strength nutes for a week. ughh... now I'm behind schedule. Oh well. Least i caught it relatively early.

disclaimer: i do not have a background as a grower, i do have a background in science and engineering.

i read where light is bad for your roots. it is very easy to bend light, fiber optic cable is 1 example. another way is to use a stream of water. i can push light through a stream of water and make it bend, i see no reason why if you have a clear tube with water in it, and it is exposed to light, that the light will simply refract down the tube and into ur tote.

obliviously this isnt a big problem, but would it help to use black tubing to run from ur hub to ur cubes ... :peace:

Good question.
I asked the owner of Stealth Hydro why didn't they use black tubes and he said because they cost more and because you can not see when they are blocked.
Trick is to hide the tube, it is supposed to be buried under the hydroton, and butted into the cube, out of sight.

If you cover the netpot when the plant is just a seedling and has a minimal root system you eliminate the chance of light getting into the res. I cover mine when I start 1/4 nutes. At that point I know the feeder lines work and you get no algae in plain water.

I did a lot of reading up on algae a week ago. You MUST have nutrients to get algae. Just plain pure water in light can not grow algae.

We've had bamboo growing in the window in clear glass containers for years, and got NO algae.

My well water comes out at 7.0 and ppm of 100 to 150 depending on whether it rained recently, and my water does fine. Much of what makes up your 300 ppm is probably useful minerals. If you track ppm in your grow, just subtract the ppm of the water.

Don't be too anxious to add nutes, or go with 1/8 today and 1/8 tomorrow.

Dang, Jonny, and you know better.

But you knew how to save them too!

Let me suggest an experiment.

Roll a joint, and smoke half of it, and put half of it away in a sealed baggie or container for two days, come back and smoke the remaining half and taste a tremendous difference. You'll be amazed.

I have pot that smells like skunk and cat urine, but none of it really tastes like it. I got a musky taste, a sandlewood taste, a lysol-pinesol taste, a honey suckle flower taste,
and a wide variety of tastes coming from different buds.

yeah, shouldn't take 3/4 bags off the vape before you mix up nutes :grinjoint:

Too stoned to mix nutrient.... ha, better me then a customer ;)

Hey Deep Water Culture, here is a great item that is cheap $4. Makes hanging lights on chains easy. Very easy to adjust chains as the biner still remains hooked on the other side. Size #4 has a 75 pound capacity. Holds cords out of the way, and just a ton of other uses. I found them at the local REI, but most outdoor stores should carry them. Plus who doesn't like the colors?

Ahh... Frosty, your screwing with me man!!!

I just just over on jawasans thread and made a comment then came here to comment, and the same pic was up, I thought I quoted onto the wrong thread so I deleted it twice before I realized what was going on.... HA!!!! lol geez....

time to put the pipe down.....

and now I'm type stuttering....

wowtestdrive, Roseman,
Thanks for the replies. I'm happy to hear everything is cool with my water. I didn't want to have to get some other thing to make my water better. I was thinking it was fine, but who better to ask then the Deep Water Culture??? I'll take everyone's suggestion on the nutes, and just be patient. Last night i checked and saw that 2 of the plants have about 3 inch roots sticking out of the cups, so... I'm pretty happy. Thaks again everyone!

:rofl::rofl::rofl:From what I perceive you (JonnyBtreed) know exactly what the S-biner is all about.

Yeah just giving jawasan some ideas when I thought/remembered those S-biners. So since those are one of the best purchases $4 I have made for hanging lights and stuff, I wanted to pass it along and what better place then then BH's home. Just another one of those things that destroys anything a hydro company has to offer for simplicity, functionality, strength and price!

I literally played with the hydro "light hangers" as they are not strong enough for the hoods, I can't run a light mover, can't attach hooks for ropes and pulleys, so chains and S-biners rock. As I mentioned, I leave one side attached to a rail/pole, and the other to a chain and it takes all of 3-5 minutes to move it. I have to move plants, then the actual adjustment takes 30 seconds.

Home Depot and Lowes both sell packs of S hooks. Couple bucks comes with a handful. Work GREAT. All different sizes. Small ones work great with small wires or string. The larger ones work great with the big extension cords, or Mogul socket cords. Also work great with chains and hanging lights. Use heavy duty chains, large S hooks, and properly mount them, you can hold tons of weight.

I also use these hooks for LST. They weigh enough to bend the tip over and start your LST. Tie them up as a hook to pull over branches when the plant gets taller and stronger.

I use these hooks for tons of different things. Love em. And SUPER cheap. I have hundreds.
