Congratulations guys! May the best bud win!

It was a great day, and ended with a great win! Thanks RP!

Am I just hearing you and the Doctor are having problems with bugs? I just bought some new stuff yesterday, supposed to kill the eggs too. I got rid of the mites but they came back, I'm thinking because of eggs and not killing them too.

As soon as I gwet home I'll post some of the stuff I've found, but it is natural and contains neem oil and a pyrethrum (sp). This should do the eggs too.

Quite the game huh? Glad you had a good one.

Yes, I was battling root aphids. A super tough little bugger, looks more like a black beetle then an aphid. I tried Neem and didn't seem to even faze these guys. Tried a couple organic, or "more organic" methods and nothing was working. Called in the big guns and used Bayer tree and shrub. Within 24 hours, mass genocide.

You can see the fallen here:

Bayer seemed to work great. Killed off the bugs. I then used Physan 20 at 1ml per 10 gallons of water (ya, that diluted still works wonders). Stuff can easily leave burns on your skin. It is the ONLY thing known to succesfulyl combat Brown Slime Algae. No amount of h202 or algaecide worked. Barley helped, but only slowed it down. Most people misdiagnose this algae as root rot. It sucks the oxygen out of the reservoir suffocating the plants, killing roots, and giving the look of root rot. This is a tough bastard! More closely related to a bacteria then an algae, it does not require much if any light. I had mine 100% blacked out, and it still thrived. Nasty, nasty stuff.

The BSA is not pictured here. Doing so many drain and replenish after 12 hours didn't give it much time to grow. I wipe down and clean out my res between each D+R.

I trimmed the roots. The plants are showing signs of hurting, but at least things are taken care of and they can start growing again. I will be doing another drain and replenish tonight, just to check on things. May end up doing another Physan run next weekend. We'll see. Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Getting excited about outdoor season! Right around the corner. Time to start planning!! :cheertwo:

That's right, now I remember all the problems you had there. It was beyond my experience I know!

I just got a note from Proverbs that he uses Azamax, though I don't know if it would have helped you any. This Azamax is added to the water directly as a preventative. I'm going to start using it from now on, these bugs are really pissing me off!

It 's very difficult to avoid little critters in the water and grow area. I spray the walls and floor every 4 weeks and had some sticky pest strips hanging int he closet. Two days before I harvested, I had some kind of little black gnat, that had two wings that make them look like little hearts flying around, clinging to my roots.

I think maybe I will try some mosquito netting, next grow.

No kidding, you have to do something. Living here in Colorado where things are pretty dry and it being winter I thought I'd be in pretty good shape, WRONG.

I've already sprayed the Ortho Home Defense in my new closet and will be adding Azamax to my water frequently from now on. I'm not too happy being a landlord I guess!

A side note...

Whenever dealing with any issues in the res. a good idea is to get a new reservoir. They are cheap, and its super easy to swap everything over.

I have found a company that sells these exact same 10 gallon totes. I have ordered them, and can confirm they are the EXACT same tote the SH ships out. Comes with a lid, but no pre-drilled holes. Drill four holes up by the handle and you are set. You can simply reuse the lid from SH, or better, cut new holes and make a new lid. For the little work, and the low price, I figure why not? Helps keep things clean.

Look here for single orders:
10 Gallon Lapis Blue Storage Box | U.S. Plastic Corp.

Places like amazon also sell them, as does Wal-Mart and other "big" stores but from what I find, they sell them as "packs" usually ten totes and lids. Its a better deal, but that's a lot of bins! lol

Just something I thought might help some fellow Deep Water Culture!

Azamax is awesome! Really good stuff. Treats damn near everything, except this pesty little root aphids! I have used it recently in the past, great results. I like it because everything they use, is food grade! Also, its ok to use up to the day of harvest. I wouldn't used it any closer then a week or so, unless I had to. Have used it out in the garden as well, to kill off some nasties in the soil. Product gets a big thumbs up for me. I try and always have some around, along with some pure neem.

You are having bugs? What kind? How bad? Maybe a pic? More then willing to help you here. Azamax would be a great start!
