The Blue Experience - Kharma Reborn

I have a difficult time diagnosing my own. When my corrective action decision is made I usually do something that brings unexpected consequences. Sometimes things work out. I just switched to organic and I'm not sure I ever fixed a deficiency with bottled nutes and such.

@bobrown14 always says his go to is Kelp and for me to chose wisely. I just smoke a bowl and ponder. I'm really more interested in making a decision and moving on.

I think I just read somewhere that "pretty leaves don't necessarily produce great flower with high resin production and terpene expression" or something like that. I wish I could remember where I read that because there was a good explanation based on plant science.

Never mind me....I'm pretty high this morning. :bongrip:

I'm researching how to handle my calcium deficiencies so this convo is very interesting. :)
Love to see how your mind is working. You are right on track...:green_heart:

Thank you Lady. That means a lot.

Your Karma is showing the exact same mine are showing. I don't really understand why it doesn't show until they hit flowering. I would be more certain of it if they would have been showing this from say week 2. I'm going to take some new pics today. This time it's much worse than before and now I'm adding cal/mag.

I think I know how this works now from everything that I am reading. It seems that we have to make sure that the plant gets enough calcium early on in veg because calcium helps to develop the cell walls and make them stronger and more heat resistant. What I don't understand (yet) is why the symptoms of inadequate calcium uptake don't start showing up until the plant starts flowering. But at least I know how this is happening now.

If you are using a medium that is not organic then this problem is easily solved with Cal/Mag supplementation. But the problem with Cal/Mag in organic soil is that the nitrate salts in it will quickly damage your bacterial population in the soil, so you have to supplement with organic Cal/Mag or Organic water soluble calcium and that is VERY expensive, like 50 bucks a quart expensive.

The second, and much more cost effective option is this:

On my next grow, my soil will already have bio available calcium from oyster shell flour because it will have sat for almost 3 months by then. I will then do the 2X Epson salt treatment once in veg and once early in flower and see what happens. If it works? Then I have solved my flowering calcium problem in organic soil. If not? Then we will continue on our quest until we get right. And hopefully learn some more in the process.

LOL it's all good Jim. I think that in my case, The new light caused extra stress on my plant and caused the calcium deficiency. Then when i started adding Cal/Mag it somehow threw off my phosphorus uptake. She will be starting week 7 on Monday. I figure if I can get her through another week or so then I can let her go as she should be done after 9 weeks.

One of the things not to forget is how this timed out in terms of the two major changes in lighting: from your old light to the CFLs to the new light. Huge shifts there in what the plant is seeing.

Hi @RETRIX - I didn't realize I had a calcium issue until my friend Toasty pointed it out because I had a couple hollow stalks. I was initially told it's a canal for the nutrients to travel through but it was all wrong. So now I'm giving high doses of calmag from the beginning.

Changing lights, garbage bag revival and being your first time; will all have factors on your growth and results. Once you stabilize your environment you can diagnose so much easier. It took me 3 grows before I could get to a healthy harvest that I was proud of, so go with the flow, research, then you'll start to nail down deficiencies easier in time.

Consistency is the key and that can only happen when you keep growing. That is why I like seeing the gears move in your brain cause all these questions we asked of ourselves and some cannot be answered until you have some experience.

All good questions you're asking...the answers will come to you...:green_heart:

Thank you Lady. I remember reading something about hollow stalks too a while back. I am hoping that I can get the ratio's right in my soil blend for next time.

You are probably right. You seem to have studied this more thoroughly than me. I just throw my self in to stuff and try to save the day through macgyvering stuff with ductape and wire. So it's going to be fun to se your next grow with this organic seashells you got going. If you can get the calcium to fall out. Feels like acid is the way to go but will then you probably need to add something more to get the pH up again?

All these plants I have been growing under led light didn't get supplemental cal/mag since three weeks ago. I grow in ordinary household soil with 50% clay pebbles and perelite. I will continue to give them the cal/mag in supplement with the ordinary Canna Terra nutes I give them. But there might be something else they are missing as well...

The next round I will start up in the fall will hopefully be in dwc. But there is a lot of problems to be solved first if I don't buy the hybrid system I have been looking at. The Autopot system from Easygrow. In that case I will buy their 8.5L buckets and the oxy injection dome they sell for them. Not sure witch nutrient series to chose then. It's not hydro and not completely soil/other either.

Yeah my plant didn't get any Cal/Mag either. I thought that what was in my grow supplement would be enough but I guess not. LOL. I really like DWC as long as I'm using AN PH Perfect. I also found out that the height estimates for LED lights do not apply to the newer COB tech. They recommend 16 to 20 inches from the canopy. But that is for the older Epistar and Bridgelux 3 and 5 watt LEDs For Cobs however, at 400 watts the light should be a minimum of 30 inches away from the tallest cola. My light is already pushing over 500 watts. and 30 inches puts me all the way up next to the exhaust fan. So I will need to install dimmers for both sides after I'm done with my series.
