diatomaceous earth,,, comments, uses, i have 10 lb food grade DE and wondering what are the various things our community does with it,,i put some in the catbox and on the critter for fleas,etc before they emerge, some sprinkled in all the house plants,,what else?

Abrasive

Pest control

Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical-grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans, with questionable efficacy. It is most commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and eventually eliminate cockroach and flea infestations. This material has wide application for insect control in grain storage. It has also been used to control bedbug infestations, but this method may take weeks to work.

Absorbent

Its absorbent qualities make it useful for spill clean-up and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends it to clean up toxic liquid spills. These qualities also lend themselves to use in facial masks to absorb excess oils.
It has been employed as a primary ingredient in a type of cat litter. The type of silica used in cat litter comes from freshwater sources and does not pose a significant health risk to pets or humans.

Thermal

Its thermal properties enable it to be used as the barrier material in some fire resistant safes. It is also used in evacuated powder insulation for use with cryogenics. Diatomaceous earth powder is inserted into the vacuum space to aid in the effectiveness of vacuum insulation.

DNA purification

Diatomite (Celite) can be used for the removal of DNA in the presence of a highly concentrated chaotropic agent such as sodium iodide, guanidinium chloride and guanidinium thiocyanate. As with other silicates, the diatomites will remove double stranded DNA but not RNA or proteins. The DNA can be extracted from the diatomites using low ionic strength buffers, including water, at neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Crude diatomites of a uniform size must first be washed in a heated acid such as 5M HCl. Calcination can further improve consistency of the material, while mild caustic treatment may improve adsorption with lower levels of chaotrophs.

Use in agriculture

Natural freshwater diatomaceous earth is used in agriculture for grain storage as an anticaking agent, as well as an insecticide. It is approved by the US Department of Agriculture as a feed supplement.
It is also used as a neutral anthelmintic (dewormer). Some farmers add it to their livestock and poultry feed to improve the health of animals. "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" is widely available in agricultural feed supply stores. It is acceptable as organic feed additive for livestock.

Hydroponics

Freshwater diatomite can be used as a growing medium in hydroponic gardens.
It is also used as a growing medium in potted plants, particularly as bonsai soil. Bonsai enthusiasts use it as a soil additive, or pot a bonsai tree in 100% diatomaceous earth. Like perlite, vermiculite, and expanded clay, it retains water and nutrients, while draining fast and freely, allowing high oxygen circulation within the growing medium.

lol sweet, lil info the darker the beans are roasted the more caffeine is destroyed, this is why its common to serve the darker stuff after dinner, and lighter roast's are the "breakfast" joe, while i love roasted to blackened oblivion flavor, i suggest the medium yuban for a more prominent boost, and it taste good,,

I love the dark stuff. And ya I know about the caffeine. At work, I occasionally ask one of the cocktail waitresses to grab me a CUP of espresso. As in coffee cup full. They think I'm going to get all amped up, but it's just a strong coffee with lower caffeine amounts.

One question I have about your males, though...
If you have them all in the same area, aren't you concerned that the pollen from one plant will contaminate the pollen from the others? Pollen is so light that it will float on the thermals, so to speak, from your lights, just like dust does....Even your breathing near them will disturb the fine particulates, and surely stir them

One question I have about your males, though...
If you have them all in the same area, aren't you concerned that the pollen from one plant will contaminate the pollen from the others? Pollen is so light that it will float on the thermals, so to speak, from your lights, just like dust does....Even your breathing near them will disturb the fine particulates, and surely stir them

i would be concerned if they were in fact in the same spot, but the boys have a room of their own far far away from the girls, they are in the room the girls used to be in, so that might be a little confusing, the girls are in the new tent, where there's no trace of pollen she how i got out of having to clean up the pollen *wink*

Hey twelve12 long time no see in here, much has changed, well as for the 2L dwc'h or "drempy" as I call them, I have 3 in them, I need to update pics as 1 (SAS)is not in its drempy yet in the pics, 1 is hiding in the corner(TT) the last is a Tt that was showing signs of hermie , so its in with the boys, if u look close you can see it in a red label/coke 2l, also the cilantro pictured is in a drempy its a smaller 1L bottle wrapped in electrical tape due to algae forming, I will do an update on the method soon, thanks for stopping by bruh

well guys n gals, spiffy and i just got back from our weekend getaway for our 1st year anniversary, it was our first trip away together it was good! and while in another town thats mmj friendly i had to go visit some headshops, and did not leave empty handed !! i had a vape or waterpipe in mind and almost got the "magic flight launch box" for 125 but instead (my budget allowed 50 tops) i decided on a pyrex waterpipe

it features a glass to glass seal system no replacing grommets needed it has a lil shelf inside for ice, and we have had only one bowl out of it thus far, bout 6 pulls apiece wow i could really taste the flavor of my purple #1 yummy! it hits hard if your not careful and i nearly blew out an eyeball and dropped a loaf in my shorts on my first hit! but after hacking up part of my liver i got the hang of it, and it hits nice, its my first ever real water pipe, that i did not build, i decided i need it to really evaluate flavor, as all i have is an old nasty metal pipe, a corncob and crappy rolling papers left over from when i used to roll my own ciggs,

it was a rough first rip!!! it was 39.99 i was surprised at the price most were quite a bit more even smaller ones were more, they had only 3 of these left, the one made by roor that was identical except for being thinner glass and a sticker was 199.99!! i grabbed it and ran like hell!! i feel feel lucky!!

The best bong I ever owned was made out of an amber beer bottle. I paid 6 bucks for it at a headshop in 1975. It hit great and just felt good in your hands. It fit under the front seat of the car real nice.

I ran over it once while setting it down in front of the car to take a leak and forgetting to pick it back up. Another broken beer bottle on a country road.

Tried to recreat it with the leftover parts, but I busted many a beer bottle trying to drill the holes and gave up.

I miss that bong.

a dremel glass cutting bit would do the trick! i have a dremel and got the box with all the assorted goodies, it has been my favorite tool for 2 decades now, i use it for everything, im on my 4th regular drem and 2nd mini i had a hookah i made out of a gallon wine jug years ago, and a breast pump pipe once too

I was referring to how you have more than one strain of male, all in the same spot. I know you have the boys seperated from the girls....But, if the males are in the same spot together, their pollen IS going to cross contaminate eachother...Just a fact my man. What I was concerned about, is the fact that there is no way to know what seeds you are actually making, because there will be a mixture of the different pollens, all in the same collection. One plant will release some pollen, and some of it will drift over into the piles you are collecting of another strain...Or drift over onto the other males' pollen sacs and fall with that pollen into whatever collection method you have going....Maybe I missed something, and I don't have a crucial piece of info thats going to make me look like a jack ass lol, but from what I can tell, you're going to have a mix of 2 or 3 different strains' pollen, and therefore, won't know what your crosses are??

Well quix you bring up good points, its kinda like this, the males are not all at the same age, I strip off all open flowers everyday, I collect only pollen right out of the sacks for the most part, I mist them and the surrounding area,every visit, there's no air circulation,I hold my breath and breath into my shirt,I'm down to only one male and a plant that started to her ie, then I just put 3 different kinds of pollen on it!! I'm calling it mosh pit! But basically I do all I can to keep it under control, and I feel my samples are pretty pure, if not I guess it would be a cubing experiment, for me all the genetics are good so if something gets mixed up,I know a couple things, if I use for example the blue diesel on a female BD, there like a 95 or better chance its what I think, if it turns out to not be true then its only possible that the resulting seed would be from 1 of 2 fathers, both are auto,both are desire able I'm not looking to sell or even give em away, so I only have myself to please or disapoint, , so as long as I get free seed that produces good meds I'm happy,I do know who mom is, so like so many people I might not know who the daddy is but depending on what traits are shown I have a pretty good idea LoL! And except for my most recent males(autos) I only had one flowering at a time, no worries bro, thanks for looking out, your a righteous doode!
