The 4x4 Grow Tent Club

Hey yall!

First time grower here, discovered this thread after looking online for some answers about it all. I'm lucky enough to have my friend mentoring me along the way, he is a master grower for some very large cultivations in Las Vegas. Even still I wanted to make a post about my setup.

My tent size is 4x4x6.5
Currently growing 5 Girl Scout Cookies (Figured it'd be best to use all the same strain for my 1st attempt)
Light: 800 watt LED
Temps: 77-82F (day) 73-77 (Night)
Humidity: 50-60%

I picked up some clones from a dispensary nearby. They are about 2 weeks into veg.

These first pics are of my setup..

I have my ladies propped up on some boxes because i zip tied my light to the top of the tent, I realize I'm going to have to attach the Ratchet Ropes so i can lower it eventually. It may look like the plants are really far from the light but they are only about 36" (3 feet) from light. Is that too far away?? To help raise humidity in the tent i drape a damp cloth over the white fan in the background and will raise my humidity as much as 25%.

In these next photos you'll see some of the leaves are curling up and dying and quite of few of the plants are experiencing some discoloring on the tips. I think the reason for this is because at first i was having issues controlling temp (got as high as 86F) and humidity was low (around 43%). Plus I had a huge fan blowing directly onto the clones which coupled with high temp/low humidity was drying my poor ladies out. Additionally the first time I watered them i used half dose of CloneX but didn't have the pH @ 5.8 it was closer to 5.0 so that probably shocked their systems too. I've since watered them twice with strictly 5.8pH water only, no nutes. Would appreciate some feedback!!

Hey all, new to the forums and first time grower just joining the 4x4 club! Been wanting to grow for over 20 years, wife gave me the go ahead finally :)

Still a few things I'm undecided on for now so will be looking for some advice here and there

Tent is a 4x4x6.5 (not sure of brand, was the only one I could find locally that wasn't $500+, seems everything up here is way over inflated)
Got 12 seeds planted in dixie cups right now with 75% promix seedling soil & 25% perlite - 2x Cuvee, 2x Jack Skellington and 8 mystery(I planted so many cause the mystery ones are from a friend who has had them kicking around for years so don't think I'd get them all to sprout, hoping to have 8-9 total sprout though)

Will then transplant them to 3 gal smart pots with 50% promix, 25% perlite & 25% vermiculite (Will probably continue to do this until I've found 1 or 2 strains I really like then regen a mother to make clones from and lower the total plant count down and use 5 gal smart pots instead) What's something good to use under smart pots so the water doesn't run through my tent and is easy to collect?

Am using a King Plus 1800W LED (to start, will probably add 1 more down the line when funds are better)

Going to be using a 6" inline fan with carbon filter and speed control (haven't decided which one percisely yet, still researching but will order very soon, open to suggestions of brands, looking for something on the quieter side) and a couple fans

Sill looking into which nutes I'll be using, it's going to more come down to cost/availability since up here(Canada) everything seems way too inflated at hydroponics stores, so will most likely be based on Amazon and what they have available for shipping in Canada

Wanted to SCROG but with their being the possibility of so many different strains is this a real possibility or should I just wait until I've found a couple that I really like?

Still need a few pieces which will come soon(PH tester, light meter) open to some suggestions for a decent light meter that's not too expensive but would be decent for testing out my lighting area.

Anyways, that's it for now I guess. Always open to suggestions/advice and hopefully within no time I'll be able to contribute!

I wouldn't advise it, and for the reason you mentioned. Flowering period lengths will undoubtedly differ, and it's a PitA to partially harvest a screen. I would even say impossible, but there are some pretty determined people in the world, lol.

I'd have just spent $1.95 at the nearest hardware store for one of those siphon pumps (it's just a plastic tube and plastic hose, with a little squeeze bulb in the middle) that they sell near the kerosene heaters for transferring kerosene from the fuel can to the heater's tank. But I'm not as stout as I used to be and buckets full of wet dirt are heavy. Plus... I'm kind of a klutz, lol, and probably would have spilled the tray, dropped the plant onto its neighbors, or both. Glad you managed it with no trouble, but those little siphon things are quite handy. If you're lucky enough to be emptying something into a container that is lower, it'll self-siphon after you get it started. Otherwise, you have to keep squeezing the "bulb."
Yes I would have, have spilled, knocked over or dropped something too.

I got a $20 shop vac from Walmart this week. Put the pots on 4 rocks within the saucer to elevate the smart pots.
Flushed, sucked out the water as I went.

Trying to save one of my girls with poor roots/draining.

Hi guys!

A little sad i haven't gotten a response yet but all is well! Quick update.

Last night i transplanted my plants into 5 gallon smart pots (first time transplanting before, was nervous but think i did it correctly). I also realized after trying to water the 5gal pots that i don't have a readily enough supply of distilled/purified water. Whats the best way to have plenty of water, you use explicitly tap water then pH? Or do yall have RO systems for water your plants?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong since I'm a first time grower too, but I'll just be going the tap water route....5 gal bucket fill with tap water, stick an aeration stone in it leave it for a day so the chlorine evaporates, then add nutes, then PH balance it every time before feeding

Buy a PH pen and some PH up and down. If you are committing to the time to grow some plants, you might as well get the watering right.

I water/feed with straight tap. I'm lucky enough to have good town water. When I set out with my grow I was keen on getting an RO setup but starting out with no gear it got back burnered until I could get something. The ones I could afford didn't really have a high output, and I didn't like how much water waste I saw they produce when not under pressure (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Yeah I've decided to wait on investing in a RO system until i find a better living situation. I'm going to just get a filter to clip onto my sink and fill up a reservoir and bubble it until I need to water again.

Also wanted to update.. I just ordered two 150w HPS bulbs to supplement my LED light for the flowering phase. I figured it would be a good idea to get some HPS for flowering to help with the penetration problem LEDs have.

My lighting is as follows:

LED: PlatinumLED (p600 "800 hps replacement") -- Won't allow me to link to website
150W HPS (2): Hydroplanet 150W Grow Light Fixture Kit (150W Grow Light Kit)

LED: PlatinumLED (p600 "800 hps replacement") -- Won't allow me to link to website

Might be because that company appears to be one of the very, very few former sponsors who've been banned ("On Vacation).

Got my ass in trouble here a few times for posting shit on here they don't like, got a collection of private messages from these guys, LOL. But that's cool, brake their rules, get a PM. Deleted my Sig, because it was a link to rollitup, The reason I use RIU is the ease of loading pics.

Couple from day 63 & 64. Getting close!

I never understood why 420 claims to be about only helping the community and sharing of knowledge (read their own words some time) but people are afraid to post certain brands or pics of brands cuz they might not be sponsors or similar shit like the link of your sig.

Censorship is not the correct action to help the cannabis community.

Censorship sucks, I can understand the spam problem but, I have been a member here for a long time and having a link to my journal from RIU deleted was in my opinion wrong.
Shit now I am going to get another PM, LOL :bongrip:

Well... I probably shouldn't have started the ball rolling on that one.

Not allowing live links to other forums that cover the same general subject is nothing new to me. I've seen it many times, many different areas of interest. I always assumed it was a nod to the individual forums' sponsors. Most forums either have sponsors supporting them (IOW, paying the NOT-inexpensive bills that come with 150,000+ member (and countless guest readers) forums) or they have random-content ads. Personally, I'd rather see cannabis-related ad banners than "anything and everything under the sun." And, in the case of forums that have sponsors (such as this one), many other forums also have sponsors, and the specific ones tend to differ from forum to forum.

I do see the occasional reference made in passing to some other forum. Or a member telling another one, "for information about that, do a web search for "Some Specific Thread/Article Title" ." I seriously doubt that such things are actively encouraged, lol. But I think the understanding is there that this is different than "advertising" a different forum with a live link.

Years ago, there were incidents where people would join this forum and appear to have done so for the sole purpose of getting members to go join other forums. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that THAT was the reason for forbidding live links to other cannabis-related forums. I mean... The staff here works hard - and I'm sure the forum owner spends more time reading threads (and everything else that he has to do behind the scenes) than most of us spend at a full time job - but it's probably impossible to read every post. So, you know... Make a rule. There didn't use to be a 50-post minimum for sending PMs, IIRC, until people started joining just to privately spam members, beg seeds, maybe even try to buy bud, IDK. And the same is probably true for the minimum before members can vote in contests. The rule would have been instituted after (numerous) abuses happened.

<SHRUGS> It's not a perfect world, no. But these things aren't the result of arbitrary spur of the moment decisions, either.

Now, mandatory on-topic content (lol): What does a person do when his/her light is designed to cover a 3'x3' space, and one's tent is 4'x4'? That'd be me. I could (but do not want to) add a 250-watt or 400-watt HID, but that's a rectangular footprint that isn't going to cover the odd-shaped extra seven square feet (and would tend to throw a little too much light in the overlapping area). I could add a 4' fluorescent fixture or two, which would fit in one direction - but then I'm left with a 1'x3' section that 4' fluorescent fixtures won't fit into. And they don't provide much illumination anyway. So... Thoughts? Ideas?

Have you considered a vertical grow, hang the lamp bare bulb and arrange the plants around it.
I have been growing this way for a few grows now and do like this method. I have a journal on RIU in the vert section, hope they don't get me for that one. Here is a pic of the setup.
