AWESOME! A random one... very nice.

One of these days I'm going to invest in a PAR meter to check the CFLs. I keep meaning to mark them, but I never do, so there's no way of knowing how effective they really are without a meter.
I think you'll be pleased with the T5 unit. Kuddos on finding it so affordable. The light heat should now come a non-issue for you. The plants will enjoy getting more light too. I'm excited for you Tead.
I ran the fixture for about an hour to burn it in and check the heat.
The tubes were warm, but not nearly as warm as the tube part of the CFs. The ballast was slightly warm, but again, not nearly as warm as the base of a CF. This allowed me to bring the fixture down pretty low.
The tubes are not optimal for veg (3000k), so new tubes will be a minor cost, but the fixture with the 3000k tubes was only ~$20, so I'm pretty darn happy so far.
Sue when I'm writing a longish post my words end up filling the screen and disappearing down offscreen. Is that what you're talking about? In a moment of inspiration I figured out that I could go down to the end, hit return a bunch, and that brings the precious words up on screen again. Confusing? Try it.
I loved Hunter S Thompson's descriptions of Nixon. No mercy.
In the days (1970's) before LED, HID, CFLs, and all that fancy stuff, we used to grow under grow-light fluorescent tubes. You can get all kinds of bulbs for the fixtures to vary the wavelength. Just watch the sizes of the ends. They make some super thin bulbs that need a special fixture... I think.
Judging from how many CFLs I supplement the LEDs with, I think you WILL need more than just two. A four-light fixture is more expensive than two basic shop units with the reflectors, but it depends on what you have room for.
Nixon deserved no mercy, and that was such a harsh thing for me to say about another human being it actually brought tears to my eyes. I must now apologize to the universe and resolve, once again, to suspend judgement.
Ahhhh all the pretty photos in High Times. I remember the record store that had a screened off back room that sold glass... and High Times.
Loved all those counter-culture rags. Voraciously consuming them all from the first issue on.
So... yea... I was aware. I'm actually using the small ones (T5's). They're like 21W each. I do believe another one will be called for. Next time I hit the hardware mother ship, I'll pick up it's twin. If I can keep the heat down with 2 in place, I might even try a third.
Monitoring the heat as the day warms and I'm still 5 under 100f, and as long as I can keep the afternoon heat under the century mark, I should be reasonably good.
Thanks for the memories... that was fun! I wonder if one can find old issues of High Times from the 70's floating out there in cyberspace.
Well... 21W/tube with 2 tubes/fixture, so 42 total. Another 50 from the 2 side LEDs. I hoping I can keep the T5s above and let the LEDs work on the side and lower growth. Might should flip that configuration... dunno.
Always stimulating conversation going on over here. No wonder it's one of my favorite stops.
Oh.... forgot ... 4 female children and a few ex's that manage to jump onto the makin ladies happy train too.
