Tead's Indoor-ish, Winter, Hempy, OGK, SOG

Words from our National Weather Service...
A record high minimum temperature of 83 degrees was set at New
Orleans International Airport yesterday. This breaks the old daily
record of 79 degrees set in 2015. In addition... July 7th was the
sixth day in a row with lows at or above 80 degrees. The previous
longest string of days with lows 80 or above was five days ending on
August 3rd 2010.

Kinda makes one wonder/worry about global weather pattern changes.

Tead: You need to bury those stretched-out stems right away, bring a CFL light up close and personal, and put a fan on them to toughen them up. I know you know this, but the sprouts look in dire need to me. :Namaste:

Over the 5 decades I have been in Alaska, the weather has gradually warmed and the patterns have changed dramatically, both in the Interior and in South-Central. The soil and the species of plants and animals appearing in certain areas are changing, too.

You need to bury those stretched-out stems right away

I can't agree more. Life's been busy... and continues to be busy, but I took some time to complete the task this morning...

bring a CFL light up close and personal

I'd love too. Unfortunately, that would bump my temps up by about 2 degrees, and I'm currently topping out at 91f daily. Note the string of CFLs in the 2nd photo that is turned off.

put a fan on them to toughen them up.

Note the big dirty box fan in the back of the tent. The poor little guys didn't have any chance at all to stand up straight. Stretching combined with the huge fan action doesn't do them many favors, but it does sure keep the temps even.
The input from the AC runs 24/7 and comes in over on the left of the tent. It's a pretty significant source of moving air as well.
I got wind tunnel action going thru my entire grow really.
I put a little opaque cup over the freshly popped Crit+ 2.0. It will block some light, but should allow it to stay upright. Not sure how I'll like it... we'll see.

I really like cloning better than seeds. Perhaps it's just because I'm so used to it.

With cloning you don't get that stretch to the seedlings when life gets so busy that you don't pay close enough attention. Good work on germination in the perlite though. :high-five: You really have your hands full trying to stay ahead of the heat. You should consider my suggestion of a trellis over the shed with a planting of jasmine. The shade you'd get and the cooling action from all that plant respiration evaporating away could only help modify those internal temps.

I finally got the last of my supplies for my hempy project delivered. She should get transplanted into the bucket later this week. I'm more excited than apprehensive. It feels really strange to be working with items I've previously laughed at needing because my soil doesn't require this type of attention, but you guys will lead me gently, won't you? :battingeyelashes:

Tead: just raise the babies up to the lights you have now. CFLs are best within the 3" range, esp on sprouts. You don't need to add any lights at all. I use old boxes, stools, anything I have handy, as most of my lights are a pain to raise or lower.

Tead, I have roots. Just a confirmation please, mix nutrients at 1/4 strength until 4-5 nodes, correct?

I got confirmation on the nutrients. We're shooting for a ph of 5.5, aren't we?

Worked it out Tead. Mr. Krip was very helpful.

Ya so it can drift up through the range .

5.5-6.2 cause calcium and magnesium are abosorbed on the higher end. Me and tead were dicussing this over on my journal a little while back because i been having some issues.

Have you been adding the milk to your water the way Tead does? Must it be 2%. I drink whole milk, when I drink it. I can purchase a small container of 2% if it's necessary.

No i use calimagic from general hydroponics so im afraid i can't help with the milk thing lol

Wait... What'd I miss?!?!

Yup... you should be good there.

That's what I shoot for. In my garden, if my meter reads anywhere between 5.4 or 5.6, I call it good.

Man... I sure dig it when I don't have to answer questions in my own thread. Thanks Lex. You guys are just awesome!

I'm sure one type of milk is pretty similar in calcium content to the next. I use 2% because that's what the spousal unit drinks.

I tried the "milk thing" your best bet is get calmag of some sort.

I was pretty happy with the milk/epsom salt replacement for CalMag. Having said that... I did return to using the CalMag supplement recently. More because it's just easier.

Sure happy to see you jump in SS!

So, I wanted to talk about catastrophes for a moment.

Let's face it... bad things can happen very fast in any hydro configuration. Those using hempy buckets for the first time may be extra prone to issues just because of unfamiliarity.

Recovering from any issues in a hempy pot, other than rot, is a simple process of flushing out the mix that has caused problems and replacing it with a clear mix or perhaps a different mix. After recovery is seen, resume normal feeding perhaps at a reduced level.

Rot is an issue that needs to be avoided at all times. It's evil. I've never really recovered from it and often loose the plant quickly. One can try H2O2 or other various cures... but they've not worked for me. An especially sensitive time is the shift from veg to bloom. I've seen many folks hit problems with rot right at that time.

Oh... blocked drainage holes should be mentioned as well. Deadly. Always make sure your baby is running well.

What causes rot in your experience?

I did a bunch of reading about it a few years ago.
First, heat just causes everything in the water to accelerate... especially any type of nasty growth.
Second, light will trigger it in a heartbeat. Different levels of light in a res will have almost corresponding growth levels.
Third, a nutrient source is required. This one we can't avoid.

Remember the old school fire triangles with heat, O2, and fuel? Very similar.

And a hempy pot eliminates the light factor in the reservoir! * lightbulb just went on in my head! *

Glad to see confirmation that perlite can be used for clones. Even the clone I took from the top of a lady, just before she popped her first hairs is doing well. It had 6 nodes and so is rather large for the cloning jar. Almost touching the cover! I like the way the Perlite/vermiculite (75%/35%) mix is performing well. It's close enough to soil for me to be comfortable with, yet a whole lot lighter, even after watering.

I just rearranged the flower unit to add another BBL from veg. This is the last in veg in soil only. She needed bracing, as her soil mass doesn't seem stable. I may have to replace some of her soil around the edges of the bin with the soil-less mix to lighten the soil.

All the ladies are now sitting on the bottom shelf, as they are tall enough to get adequate lighting.

My fingers sure smell good after running my hands through all the leaves (to remove debris.) Still no sign of mites on ANY plants. I am astounded!
