Tales From The Krip!

Always scares me when they don't shed that shell right away. I always push more dirt around them and mist with water,,, hoping that will be enough to break em out, before my fat ass fingers have to try to helpem along.... I been having a bad run on last seeds. I use a plate and paper towel/ plastic wrap,,, I think it's something in the paper towels I was using. Softeners or glues or something. GL

One grower I saw somewhere said to make sure to use boiling water to wet the paper towels before letting a seed touch it. Good advice me thinks. :bongrip:

I hear ya', Brother, and, unfortunately, I've been sharing your bad run on seeds.

That CB went unchanged and last night I decided to operate. When I (GENTLY!) removed the husk, the entire "head" just fell off. When I checked inside of the seed husk, the cotyledon had never opened and had basically petrified inside of the shell into a tiny rock-like ball.

The Mazar x White Rhino that had sprouted never got her cotyledon completely out of the ground and within a few days of sprouting, she started rotting at the top.

If I didn't know better, I would say the soil was probably too moist, but it's not, so I'm not sure why I've been having such a low germination rate.

The BAK that sprouted is doing great and pushing out her second set of true leaves.

I did plant a few more seeds and a Heavyweight Fruit Punch sprouted and should make it fine. I also just planted a Delicious Candy and a Pyramid Tut. I'm REALLY hoping to see that Tut sprout!

I haven't killed this many seeds since my first journal! Now I remember why I love clones so much!

But that's why we must plants seeds Mister Krip,,, got to find a good mother. So we can clone. Last year a brang home a clone from a friend I been dealing with for years, and be damned if I didn't bring home a bigger problem than two spotted mites,, damn hemp/russet mites. Hell 50 of they can catch a ride on the back of a spider mite. Sure was my bad I didn't spray and assumed they were infected out the gate... But I looked them over and didn't see any mite sign. Hell if I got mites I could've dealt with that... But these suckers are bad. And had them before they showed and sign. I'm pretty sure it was from a strain I really wanted to try called Mother Superior. Suppose to be unable to pollinate these. Mike's been working on this one for the last 6-7 years. So he's had a major amount of clones around. But is a great idea now that people are going to be growing hemp anywhere close to a garden of good pot. Pollen can carry miles and miles in a good breeze.

I never had any problem,, and get great % of success when I use the cheapest paper towel on the shelf. It's when Miss J gets other brands I seem to lose them. And when I don't keep on the ball with a thermometer. I mean I threw 6 on a plate the other day and 4 cracked,,, but survival rate sucked. I think I got 2. I think it's is something in them. I should've looked at the label. Ohh well shit happens. I just had Miss J get the cheapies just for me.... But I also noted I had some that had 100% failure to even crack, I forget which it was. But I'll see when I get my lineup ready,, which is lacking anyways.

But good to see ya back Mister Krip.

QUICK UPDATE & NEW ARRIVAL

I've been pretty disappointed with germination rates in this recent batch of seeds. Out of something like 10-12 seeds, only three have sprouted, so far, and I'm only holding out hope for another one or two, although maybe I'll be surprised with some more.

I'm thinking a germination mat MAY help since the cab is staying pretty cool, but I would have expected a much higher success rate, even with the lower (mid-to-high 70's!) temps.

That being said, I'm pretty happy with the strains I have, so far, but would really like to try for ONE more potential mom.

The BAK is now putting out her third set of true leaves and will be ready for her first drench soon:

The Fruit Punch just spouted a few days ago is still working on her first set of leaves:

And, I'm VERY excited for the new arrival - KING TUT (Tutankhamen by Pyramid Seeds)!!! :yahoo:

I tend to lean towards the Indica dominant strains, but this 80% Sativa (AK47 cross) boasts a very HIGH THC content (up to 30%!) with some great euphoric effects.

NOTE: Sue, you may want to look into this strain for your daughter! ;)

Since they're feminized seeds, I'm pretty sure this "Boy King" will actually be a girl!:

Since I'm looking to create some Bonsai mom's, I'm still a long way from having anything that will end up in a flower tent, but soon the BAK will get her first topping. I'll wait until the cutting is big enough to clone, and that's when the real fun starts!

Happy Harvests!

I use one of them digital thermometers alot when germinating seeds. I use the paper towel folded up on a china plate covered with plastic wrap. Then depends on time of year,, in the summer I use the computer tower and you might have to place a magazine ontop to keep heat in. I'm shooting for 80 degrees. In the winter time, I put the plate on top my reflector hood. If the temp gets to warm,, I put a book under it. Most fresh seeds pop in 36 hours, but then I like to warm my soil with warm water till it's about the same as the plate was before I put them in soil,,, as to not shock the baby tap root.

But we all have bad runs. I almost always get close to 85% I'd say rates. But I've had a bad one too lately. But I know it's seed. I planted 5 of one strain,, and I got one sickly sprout? I've had afew damp off also out there. GL with the girls

I usually soak the seeds until I see a small taproot, then put in a Rapid Rooter cube, but since I'm using Doc's kit and not going hydro this time, I wanted to start the seeds right in the high brix soil.

I've heard of several people having issues with starting seeds in Doc's kit, and some reporting that the soil is actually "eating" the seeds before they have a chance to germinate when the biology is really cranking. And, I've read Doc recommend starting seeds in the grow cube and putting the cube in the high brix soil, for people having issues, but I don't believe the soil is the problem or I'd have already broken out the cubes.

I do have a germination mat that I almost never use and could put right in the cabinet, if needed, but think I'm going to just ride it out and see what happens. For that small veg space, three moms is probably enough, but I think I can squeeze four bonsai mom's in there and still have room for 6-8 clones.

The plan is to upgrade to a larger tent (upgrading from a 2' x 2' x 5' to a 4' x 4' with more head space), so I should be able to easily harvest twice as much as the previous grows. I anticipate it will be closer to 3x more since, I'll be able to hang the carbon filter, have more height, etc.

That means, I won't have to harvest as often to have enough meds for personal use and to make the caps for my Dad's Parkinson's Disease.

So, I'm going to try to start four plants at the same time. If I was smart, I'd make them all the same strain so they finished together, but I'll likely do two strains concurrently.

A couple/few weeks before harvest, I'll start some clones for the next round and only veg them in the small cab for a few weeks. Then, when the flower tent is harvested, I'll move the clones into the tent to finish vegging under the LED's before flipping the tent back to 12/12.

Timing is really everything. And, since I'm so anxious to be back up after not being able to grow for the last 18 months, or so, I'm pretty sure the first round will either be four different strains or four cuts of the BAK which is a couple of weeks ahead of the others. It will all depend on whether I decide to flower the seedlings and keep their clones as the mom's or just flower out the clones.

Part of me wants to start working on the Bonsai moms ASAP and the other part wants to get a harvest in ASAP so we'll see which part of me wins!

STRAIN INFO

Since we're at that boring part of the grow just waiting for germination and seedlings to mature to a point where they're "stable" and ready for nutes, I thought I'd post some info on the strains I currently have sprouted.

Here is some strain review info pasted from the web...

Bad Azz Kush

Bad Azz Kush is a potent indica dominant strain created through a powerful three-way cross of the infamous OG Kush X Purple Urkle X Afghan Kush strains. This powerhouse bud was created by the world-famous Barney’s Farms in collaboration with rapper Bad Azz of Dog Pound Gangsta Crips. With an insanely high THC level that bottoms out at 23% and long-lasting super heavy effects, this bud is not for the light of heart. The Bad Azz Kush high has a fast-hitting onset that smashes into your mind mere minutes after your last exhale, launching you into a state of heady blissful euphoria near instantly. As your mind fades further and further into pure unfocused happiness, your body will soon fall off into a heavy relaxing state with a light buzzing effect that keeps you anchored to anywhere you happen to be sitting. With these effects and its high THC level, Bad Azz Kush is often chosen to treat conditions such as chronic fatigue, muscle spasms, chronic anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. This bud has a sweet hashy berry flavor with hints of herbs and pine. The aroma is very earthy with a pungent fruity overtone accented by spicy herbs and hash. Bad Azz Kush buds have heavy dense rock hard dark olive green nugs with purple undertones, dark amber hairs, and a coating of matching crystal trichomes.

Fruit Punch

Fruit Punch is a sativa dominant hybrid strain created through a cross of the classic Skunk X Haze X Northern Lights strains. With a super smooth smoke and an insanely addictive sweet fruity flavor, you’ll be begging for a hit from Fruit Punch! The taste is said to have a sweet yet tangy citrus berry flavor that’s almost sugary and an aroma to match, although with a dank pungent twist The Fruit Punch high is just as intoxicating as its flavor, with lethargic effects that are great for kicking back on a lazy afternoon when you may still need to get something done. The high hits you first with a cerebral boost that leaves you feeling euphoric and completely at ease with the world. As this state builds, so will your motivation, although this will quickly be counted by a sense of laziness. Because of these effects and its insanely powerful 18-25% average THC level, Fruit Punch is the perfect choice for patients suffering from conditions such as insomnia, chronic pain, depression, and chronic fatigue. Fruit Punch buds have succulent lumpy little bright green nugs that are dotted with bright oranges, reds, and blues for an effect almost like a bowl of Fruity Pebbles!

Wow couldn’t believe this one was a combo of Northern lights, skunk and Haze. The flavor is amazing and the smell the same. Smells very strong of berry and is very similar to fruit punch for sure. It smokes very sweet as well and it’s backed with some gas as you’d expect. I smoked it as a wake n bake and I was surprised by the effects. With 70% Sativa I was looking for a wake up high and got it for about 20 minutes and then a lazy relaxing high set it. The high is wonderful, but surprised me. More of a lazy day hang out high. Great flavor and smell.

Fruit Punch was my very first "non-bagseed" grow!!!! Kept her in my rotation for years now through clones. A very sturdy, upright/skinny-christmas-tree in shape and needs to be trimmed and trained indoors. (note: bending of stems needs to start early because she'll start to become very rigid at about 4 wks) Will have some natural purple on stems an leaf petioles. Very forgiving strain for beginners. FP is a A++++ fanastic smoke. Energizing both mentally and physically. She's a very heavy feeder as well as a pretty, heavy hitter with an advertised 22% THC and 1.2%

The best sativa in the land. Coming from a heavy indica smoker

Tutankhamen

Tutankhamen, or “King Tut” for short, is a sativa dominant hybrid (80% sativa/20% indica) strain created as a descendant of the infamous AK-47 strain. Like you definitely guessed, Tutankhamen is named for the King Tut, but what you probably didn’t’ know is that this bud is one of the most powerful in existence – it consistently has been tested at having a THC level of up to 29%. Tutankhamen has a sweet fruity taste of citrus and earth with a slightly skunky aftertaste that becomes pungent upon exhale. The aroma is surprisingly delicate, with a rich floral earthy smell that has only a hint of sweetness to it. Tutankhamen buds have large oversized Christmas-tree shaped forest green nugs with dark olive green leaves, thick purple hairs, and a super sticky layer of visible sweet resin. The Tutankhamen high is characterized by a stoney introspective cerebral state. You’ll be hit with an immediate onset of a cerebral head rush that numbs the mind and leaves you hazy and distant. A numbing body high will slowly overtake you, leaving you completely relaxed and helplessly couch-locked with a deep sense of spacey introspection. These effects and its insanely high THC level make Tutankhamen perfect for treating chronic pain, mild to moderate cases of depression, chronic stress or anxiety, and chronic fatigue.

I don't know why more people are not growing this? It's a very strong high and this is a strain you'll get your lb a light easy the buds are so dense and sticky. It's some of the nicest smoke I've grown

Just ridiculously strong and good. This is out on the couch weed, not for "doing things" or being productive.

BEST Bud I’ve had in a Long time of maybe ever

Strongest stain i've ever tested. Even leaf was strong to smoke.. Very good strain!

I'm looking forward to all of these! As my old friend & mentor, OMM :rip:, used to say, "So many strains, so little time!"

Happy Harvests!

Hey there Mr K - sounds like a nice line up. G/L with your seedlings.

The most stressful part for me for sure. Don't feel bad about germination not going as planned. 1 time I did a pack of 10 and only 1 made it and it was a male. So had to wait 3-4 weeks to find that out. Could be a little worse... I guess.

Things happen for a reason. You will make it thru and the worthy girls will too!

Thanks, Brother! :thanks:

Yeah, I agree 420%. The frustration comes from the wasted time and wasted money; and sometimes, losing the possibility of a much wanted strain. That being said, once everything is "cranking" again, I won't even think about the failed germinations and the ones that are successful will hopefully throw off clones for years, so it makes up for the wasted money. ;)

QUICK UPDATE

I just gave the BAK her first drench. Doc's kit is pretty economical to begin with, but since I'm starting these seedlings in 2"-4" containers, it's even more so. I only mixed up a quart of double strength Transplant plus Tea and there was plenty left over which I just poured into one of my potted fruit trees.

She was looking incredibly healthy before the drench and I'll try to get some pics up later tonight or tomorrow to see if there's any notable difference.

Right now, I'm sticking to Doc's schedule and will likely do so for all the plants I flower in this first "new" round because I want fast growth. However, once the Bonsai Mom's are fairly established, I'll want to slow the growth and I will alter the schedule for them so they only get a couple drenches each month.

The FP & TUT both are looking solid but are still very small developing the first leafs and are both probably 2 weeks from seeing their first drenches.

I did have one last thought as I was considering my plan moving forward. I had mentioned in a response to Brother NCW that I'm wavering between flowering out the seedlings after cloning them, or waiting for the clones to develop and flowering the clones.

Flowering the seedlings would get me to a harvest a few weeks quicker, but would then take longer to develop the Bonsai Mom's.

So, here's the new consideration, and the one I'm really leaning towards....

In all the time I've been growing, I've NEVER grown an auto-flower. Primarily because I like to find a good mom and take lots of clones and you can't make an auto into a mom. Also, I always figured, "why cross a perfectly good Indica/Sativa with something like a Ruderalis that has 0% THC?" But, the breeders have really come a long way with auto-flowering strains and I do have several auto-flower seeds.

I think I'm going to go through the seed stash tonight and see what's there for auto's and plant some of those this weekend.

I can make the first round the autos, which should finish pretty quickly, while allowing the current seedlings to mature into Mom's which should be able to throw off plenty of clones by the time the autos are harvested.

I think that gives me the best of both worlds. It doesn't delay either a harvest or the development of the Moms - it just delays the time to see a harvest from the three current strains.

So, once I see what I have available for autos, I'll make some decisions and post another update, but I think this is the way to go, assuming I have some decent auto's available.

Happy Harvests!

K

Hmmm....Only had two autos available. One Dutch Passion Auto Mazar and a FastBuds "Lucy"-25. I was a big fan of the Barney's Farm Lucy so should be interesting to see how the auto turns out.

I was hoping to have at least four auto's, but I never order them and, anytime they're offered as freebies, I always ask to swap out for photos.

Either way, I figure they'll help if they germinate and, if they don't, I may as well find out now, so I planted those two and we'll see what happens.

More King Tut. They are a week into flower, some of these pictures are older. These things grow like cabbage. I used Silica, but i dont think it needed it. I used House and Garden's Root Excellorator, and Amino Treatment, that really seemed to help... im a hydro guy, these are in soil. Harvest in 60 days, a world class strength, a big yield, who wouldnt want to grow this stuff

Pulling up a chair :Namaste::cool:
The mazar is going to be goooooooood.
have you tried dinafem? their xxl strains get like 4 feet tall :)

Thanks, Brother & :welcome:

Unfortunately, the Auto Mazar didn't sprout
The Lucy-25 did sprout, though, and is looking good! :yahoo:
Haven't grown any Dinafem yet, but wouldn't hesitate - I've only heard good things about them. I believe I have a few in the seed stash somewhere and just haven't gotten to them yet.

I've been following your Tut grow and the plant looks awesome! :welldone:
Have you harvested any yet? How would you rate the quality?

QUICK UPDATE

As I mentioned in response to Brother Purps, the Auto Mazar never sprouted but the Lucy-25 did and is looking good for a seedling, although, just a little bit lanky.

The Fruit Punch and Tut are both moving slow but both look healthy so I'm not complaining.

The BAK seems to be the quickest grower of the three, although, we'll see how they compare in flower; and I just took my first cutting/clone of her tonight. I did an "Uncle Ben's Topping" between the 2nd and 3rd nodes which should result in four primary colas.

Also, the painting on the house is still going on, but I did purchase and receive a new Vivosun 48"x48"x80" grow tent and a new 6" Phresh filter for the same 440 cfm fan I was using in the prior 2'x4' tent. I also purchased the 10 gallon pots I'll be growing in.

The Vivosun tent was cheap (less than half the price of the Gorilla tent I was eyeing!) and had fairly good reviews.

So, now I'm all ready to get back up and anxious for this painting to finally get done but the Painter hasn't even been here since last Wednesday, so, like everything else, it's moving slowly! :(

Once the room is ready, I'll need to do some minor DIY for the ducting. The last tent I was exhausting right into the room, but for this one, I'm going to exhaust out a window, so I'll need to cut some plywood to fit the window and install a vent for the ducting.

Target will be to harvest 24+ oz. from four plants in the 4" x 4" space, which should be easily doable with the right strains. I expect the first round will be somewhat less since I'm probably not going to veg as long to get a quick harvest in while the moms are developing.

Happy Harvests!

K
