Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -
Sue,
I'm looking to switch over to LOS or High Brix soil next grow. My question: How do you decide which plants will be beneficial to grow in the pot with your "pot"? From past experience with vegetable and herb window gardens, the more plants in the pot the smaller each plant grows.
Thanks!
P.S. I started using the SWICK System last week, and I absolutely love it! The knowledge you share is vital to this community and I plan to learn as much from you as I can.
Welcome MysterySeeds. (Love that user name BTW!) I'm so thrilled you're enjoying the SWICK. Your life just got easier. The LOS would change your life. Seriously. Will you be considering no-till? The real beauty of my soil recipe is it's ability, with proper maintenance, to improve with each and every cycle. My expectation is to continue to run these pots of LOS for many, many years and harvest healthier and more potent plants each time. Once you get the routine down pat it's almost effortless. Harvest by cutting above the soil line, reset the pot with a topdressing, plant the new seed and go. Twice a week teas or drenches and that's it. Simplicity itself.
It warms my heart to have influenced another grower to consider LOS. We have a multitude of experienced organic cannabis growers on the site and they can be an invaluable resource. The link in my signature to the soil thread is an exploration of the many varied LOS recipes we use for our soil mixes.
Should you choose HB, Doc has that excellent Q&A thread where he teaches us how to succeed with the kit. Obviously I'm a fan of both approaches, although this will be my first HB run. You can watch me do both and it may help you make an informed choice. I blame Greytail for my interest in the HB. How could I resist the call of those happy plants? The other HB growers surround you in support with every grow. That love is a big draw as well.
It goes without saying that my joyful support of LOS will be a constant.
Re living mulch: The most beneficial, and easiest to grow living mulch is white clover. Hearty, compact and an active nitrogen fixer, so every time you trim and drop you are helping the micro herd care for your plants. As the cannabis takes over the pot the clover die back from lack of light and then rebound following harvest. I'm a big fan of side lighting, so mine never did die back.
If you have large enough pots (I would think a minimum 20 gallons) I'd consider Borage. It benefits it's neighbors in fabulous ways that we have yet to fully understand. A visually beautiful plant to grow and another priceless trim and drop.
I see fenugreek used a lot. Haven't tried it myself.
Your concern about the plants competing for resources is born of having watched herbs growing as a community in smaller pots. With LOS and HB you are working with vibrant microbes and the soil food web. It's difficult to mirror that in small pots. As Doc is fond of saying "Minerals, Microbes and Magic". Either choice is a win, IMHO.
We all want you to succeed in the transition, regardless of your choice, so don't hesitate to ask anything.
