Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL - LED

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Boys, please. 420Pursuit, you must have some reason for choosing this recipe. It might be more helpful if you could explain your reasoning. This is NOT a competition. My impression is that you wanted some confirmation that this was a good recipe and the response wasn't what you expected. Please give some thought to a response that gives us a better insight into your thinking.

Doc's HB kit is a proven performer. That's why I'm excited to get the opportunity to watch this different version of living soil. Let's please dispense with the "mine is better than yours" mentality and get back to the business if talking about a good recipe for LOS.

Thank you.

So is my kit soil Los with my house and garden nutrients?

Very very very broad term.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

If my soil is providing a structure for growth in said plant I'd say it's alive and well

Here's an example to compare to. If you're doing better, I'm sure we all want to use your recipe. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Just to clarify, that's Doc Bud's plant - the grower with the strong opinion. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I think 420Pursuit just forgot to check out the guy whose advice he was rejecting. :Namaste:

Ha! I even recognized it and thought "I don't remember Greytail growing....." LOL!

Definitely worthy of some chest thumping. Let's be kind though. Think we can do that?

Nice pic, SweetSue. I was just wondering to myself earlier, when you posted that very picture in fact, when (if) you were going to change it to one of your own lovely buds or plants. I like it. Well done!

Thanks Sorenna (giggle). I'd been thinking about for a while and when I took this one today it said "ME!!"

I'm still getting used to it. :laughtwo::green_heart:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

All I know is Doc, Dutty, Sue, COorganics, and many others have a great deal of experience and knowledge that they share here. I would like to see that continue. I don't think anyone is beating their chest, those are words that were projected onto this discussion. Wisdom comes in many forms and should not be mistaken for "Piss and Vinegar" or a chest beating. If you are going to challenge a tried and true method with something else then you should be prepared for ridicule with some ideas about why you are choosing a specific mix. So far there has been no explanation. If you are just trying to learn and share then do that. This is a great forum and an even better journal to learn from. Don't be afraid to share your thoughts but this is a learning experience so please read and learn too.

There is my two sense :)
:peace:

All this testosterone. It's bound to flare now and again. We'll get past it quickly. For some reason this animosity keeps rearing it's head. I'm banking on our being more secure in our chosen methods. I know I'm comfortable with both of mine. We have a unique thing going on here with this grow showcasing LOS beside Doc's HB kit and Dutty showcasing the kit beside H&G bottles. Let's set our egos aside and watch the grows. We have a lot of science to pull together here. We should be thinking like a team.

All of us together. Bring those toys back. I'm still playing.

OK Doc. A couple tablespoons on the surface, under the mulch. Sound good?

Hey there SS - catching up to your journal (not finished yet but I had to reply here) - I use the Calcium from Raw Supply - same stuff you have pictured and also use the Azomite powder from them as well. When cooking my soil I put a liberal amount (cup of each) of each into the soil (~2cu.ft.) as an amendment and also top dress with a small handful of each at switch to flower, so yeah 2 tbls is fine. I've been running LED with LOS and no worries with nutrient issues at all. Check my grow journal pics of REAL healthy plants.

IMHO CAL/MAG issues and LED lights can be an issue with folks that grow with salts and are feeding the plant. My bet would be not cal/mag but more likely lockout from something else (PH??). Just my hunch I don't have enough experience with all that.

LOS you should not have issues at all with any nutrients even with LED lighting. I'm seriously hitting my girls hard too with LED.

Seriously I've had more issue with HID and temps than LED and cal/mag.

Get the soil right and everything else falls in line. Sue you know what I'm talking about.

Don't stress too much over the LED thing, I'm sure you will not skip a beat and neither will the girls. Reason I switched was I knew I was going to step it up grow wise and decided to bite the bullet and just go for it. The only issue I had was getting more males with regular seeds which was a minor hic-up but not much. I just got a few auto seeds (Sweet Dark Devil) to take the place of my males that went to compost. Those autos should finish first even tho they are just starting out. I've got 3 nodes already on my Dark Devil @ 2 weeks under LED @ 12". With LED start them out farther away from the light say 20-24" when they are seedlings for the first week or so, the LED can burn if you start out too close early on, but that's the same with any lighting really. I've burned seedlings with them so grower beware!

Thank you bobrown. That was helpful in many ways. I started with the lights about 27" away, aware of the potential burn. After working so close with CFLs it was a real challenge at first not to lower that light.

I agree with your assessment about LEDs and LOS. With a strong soil matrix and an active and vital soil food web there simply aren't concerns of deficiencies. Since I have no background in bottled nutrients I don't have the habit of watching for deficiency, so LOS is a very good fit for me. :laughtwo:

I appreciate being surrounded by all these experienced growers, both LOS and HB. I believe in both of these soils I'm playing in. I'm so passionate about them that it's easy to forget I'm still wringing wet behind the ears.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

what a great tutorial!

I humbly ask that you would copy and paste that into my "In the Lab" thread. It's a great tutorial!

As for LOS and HB being "different" approaches, I'd say they differ only in means, not in principle. You'll take the High Brix like a duck in a different pond. You'll feel the energy and vibration of the plants....like another note on the scale. In tune, strong....just a different vibration.

Just to be clear, do you do a retest and reuse of the High Brix soil for future grows?
I was under the impression this was a single grow soil setup. I'm excited to think I might be mistaken.

Time to build some Living Organic Soil! WooHoo!!!!!

Pictures and narrative coming soon.

I can't believe I get to mix soil for a second day in a row. Gardener Heaven !!! :laughtwo::green_heart:

I recycle mine 4 times.....could go longer if I added more promix.

I've had the soil re-tested and the mineral broadcast re-formulated for 3rd and 4th rounds of use. As long as people stay within reason, the soil can be re-used up to 6 times....but I find quality starts to decrease much after that.

I've bought ONE bag of Promix in the last 6 months....the rest is all recycled soil.

SOIL BUILDING:Living Organic Soil (LOS)

I don't think there are many things more pleasurable than building a strong Living Organic Soil. I got so carried away yesterday with the HB mix that I forgot to get my enzyme tea done, so I made sure to get it going before I started into the LOS mix.

image23015.jpg

Tomorrow morning this will be configured into a nutrient-rich tea for the micro herd. I've been a bit remiss about this lately, but the soil can handle a bit of inconsistency.

Once again we begin by collecting rainwater. I'll need about a gallon and a half for this batch. I'm only mixing up a cubic foot of the LOS. I already have two pots. I just need some on hand for germinating and seedling stage.

image23016.jpg

I thought of the HB as mixing the soil. Living Organic Soil is a building project to me. It's formulating a fine recipe to feed the herd. There's much more diversity in the mix.

My base mix is equal parts by volume of sphagnum peat moss, Worm Power vermicompost and pumice.

image23017.jpg

I was fascinated by the difference between Worm Power vermicompost and the Wiggle Worm EWC. Worlds apart in quality. I reminded myself that the HB mix uses this substandard EWC because you're controlling the phosphorous content. Sorry, it looks deficient to me. I love digging into the Worm Power. You can feel the energy ready to burst out. Look at me - excited about high quality worm pop! :laughtwo:

image23018.jpg

To the base we add 4 cups of the Clackamas Coots-style minerals mix and 1.5 cups of the accompanying. CC-style nutrient mix.

image23019.jpg

Coots has recommended adding the malted barley grain directly to the soil mix for the added enzyme boost. His success inspired me to do the same with this mix. It's something I will do from now on with each new batch. Using the coffee grinder purchased just for grinding malted barley I powdered up 2 cups of the grain.

image23020.jpg

I have Yum Yum Mix, so 3/4 cup of that, along with 3/4 cup of zeolite (helps with water retention) and some biochar I had on hand, so why not? Only good can come of it. Oh, and about a half cup of some exotic Japanese river sands, just because they're interesting shapes and surfaces.

image23021.jpg

I use a SWICK watering system, which means I want extra aeration in the mix to help with all that wicking that will keep my soil matrix evenly hydrated. An evenly hydrated matrix means the micro herd and fungi can more efficiently shuttle nutrients around when called upon.

My choice for extra aeration is rice hulls. They're beautiful, fragrant, add silica to the food cart and some interesting surface areas for the micro herd. One of the things I'm always trying to accomplish with my soil mix is a wide diversity of surface areas. I like to imagine the biota making use of all this diversity, places to hide and hunt, living out their destiny with an abundance of available options. It's that Mother Earth thing run amok again.

image23022.jpg

Now for my second favorite part - the initial mixing.

image23023.jpg

At this stage I'm working for a homogenous blend. There should be no big chunks of peat moss, so I break them up as I go. Then it's just dredge and lift, toss and tumble, mix and churn until everything looks completely dispersed throughout.

Using the Chapin, spray with 1 1/2 gallons of rainwater.

image23024.jpg

My favorite part - the final mixing.

image23025.jpg

I love the feel of the soil components, the smells of the mingling. Using my bare hands allows for a finer mix IMHO. Any larger pieces of peat are easier to feel than see at this stage and, darn it, I just LOVE getting my arms up to the elbow in fabulous soil. This soil fills ME with energy. You can imagine the happy plants that will benefit from my efforts today.

I mean really, isn't this just the most beautiful stuff? You should smell it. Dank and sweet at the same time. It smells like life to me.

image23026.jpg

Water and mix, water and mix - the time is lost in the joy of playing in the dirt. I could never do this with gloves.

It's hard not to linger a moment and just appreciate all this loveliness. Life will spring from this soil that will help my family be healthier. What a blessed thing, eh?

image23027.jpg

The soil building is complete. It will be covered and stored, being turned once a week for the next month.

image23028.jpg

Both soils cooking. The countdown begins.

Notice the HB soil is in the electric blue tote. I thought that appropriate.

image23029.jpg

Thank you for sharing in my joy through the soil building process. Now begins the hardest part - the waiting. I have much to do though, between now and May 7, when these soils will be ready for planting.

:Namaste:

DrZiggy, are you as excited as I am?????:slide:

Enough already! This is one of the best soil threads running right now. I've learned a lot since Sue started it & will continue to do so. To put it blunt we can use a little competitive spirit around here on 420; Just keep it respectful & courteous in the true 420 mag way of debating.
